War Horse

War-horse-poster1

Directed by: Steven Spielberg
Written by: Lee Hall, Richard Curtis
Cast: Emily Watson, David Thewlis, Peter Mullan, Niels Arestrup, Tom Hiddleston, Jeremy Irvine, Benedict Cumberbatch, Toby Kebbell
Studio: Dreamworks
Genre: Drama, War
Official Site:
Plot: A young man (Jeremy Irvine) and his beloved horse Joey, after building their friendship upon improbable hardship and toil, are separated at the outbreak of World War I. As Joey travels from Britain and across France through one adventure after another, his owner joins the army in the hopes of reuniting with his friend.

Review:

If you're walking into War Horse expecting something the likes of Saving Private Ryan, viewer beware. This is a very different kind of war film, bloodless yet not without plentiful casualties, and sweeping while very intimate, ignoring the larger workings of The Great War and focusing entirely on Joey the horse and the lives he touches from one end of the war to the other. Joey is firmly the star - the movie's best scene features him racing wildly across the trenches in the midst of a bombastic firefight - and its his lively personality and interactions with the human costars that make the movie...[more]...

It's Spielberg, so I'm there. Good review.

We get more than our fair share of people making bizarre noises at our casino. Last night, a poker player throughout the evening went from sounding like a pirate, to an extra in a Bruce Lee movie, to the "Mahna Mahna" guy, to a Skeksis, and eventually a Wookie. And people wonder why we observe city bar hours when declaring last call.

I drove across town through nightmare traffic and barely made the screening in time, but it was worth it. WAR HORSE is extraordinary. It's schmaltz, but dammit, it's Spielberg schmaltz, so it works.

Wait, scratch what I said this morning, turns out a I DO get a pass to the War Horse screening! Their timing just completely sucks and instead of notifying me yesterday like they said they would, it was this afternoon while I was asleep. Good thing I woke up a few hours early and happened to check my phone.

Speaking as one with no knowledge at all of the John Carter books, John Carter the movie looks like it'll be a good lot of fun. Maybe I'm just easily distracted by shiny objects, but I'm always up for a colorful space adventure.

Looks like no War Horse screening for me tonight. Poo.

fucking fierce. when i was 19 i was eating ice cream all night and making bagel sandwiches and watching Star Wars instead of doing my homework at a community college (for a class i failed twice - high school level algebra). this guy is gonna turn out 100 times better than me and i came from a right wing evangelical christian family.

Work that suit! How you can be against happy couples raising well-loved kids is beyond me.

There are so many needy kids out there it's amazing to me that there is any resistance to place them in loving homes. Do gay people break up more frequently than straight people? Are they less responsable? It's senseless.

If horrorfan23 keeps baiting me with pictures Emma Stone making funny faces, I'm just gonna have to keep firing back with snarky captions.

Is it intentional or not? That's the question.

horrorfan23
horrorfan23 at 07:45 PM Nov 30

It's win-win. I get to fuel my love and post Emma Stone pictures and you can work on your captions. It works.

Think I'll have to finish Bodyguards & Assassins another night. Interesting so far, but sorely lacking in Donnie Yen being Donnie Yen. Hopefully the remaining 78 minutes does something about that.

About to start up Bodyguards & Assassins on Netflix Instant. I've no idea what it's about, but it has Donnie Yen, so that scores it points right off the bat.

Thanks. I thought the quotes just abandoned me for no reason. Those quotes are such dirty bitches.

Children of Men: One of the best sci-fi/drama/action films of the last decade, and miles ahead of most movies in any one of those genres. Whoever's been delaying Alfonso Cuaron's Gravity from getting made, point me at 'em; they're about to get a visit from my old friend Captain Bitchslap.
