The Race issue: A non prejudiced fanboy perspective

"Have you heard about the casting rumors for Johnny Storm in the new Fantastic Four movie?"
"No."
"They are auditioning black actors. However, Sue Storm will be white."
"Well that doesn't work."

Well, it could. I'll get to that.

I don't mind Johnny Storm being played by a black guy. I have no issue with it. I don't mind Jamie Foxx playing Max Dillion/Electro, didn't mind Michael Clarke Duncan being the Kingpin, and hell, if Donald Glover took on Peter Parker (Andrew Garfield is a lock for me now but let's keep in the frame of mind here) because like if you think about it, he can play a nerdy guy pretty well. And he can also act funny and dramatic.

Now many of you are saying, well Donald Glover can't be Peter Parker. He's black. Well Peter Parker is from New York, and Andrew Garfield is British. What difference does it make? If I can get behind the actor playing the part doesn't it just need to grasp the audience well enough to make you forget about racial differences?

And then there was a time where people got up in arms because Superman is British but Superman is supposed to be American. Well Superman is an alien, yes he's about truth justice and the American way (or all that stuff, per Superman Returns) but Thor is not American (still otherworldly, if we wanna get technical), and he protected Manhattan from an alien invasion. So even Cavill is British he's obviously trying to have a Yankee accent and not change the character's true sense of being so there.

I don't allow many comic book movie changes to get under my skin, if anything Spider-Man movies take the cake the most because well, look at my goddamn MFC name. The dude means a lot to me. And I mean that more in the Peter Parker sense, not in the Spidey sense, and this is coming from a guy who doesn't read Spidey comics (I'm very behind on Ultimate) because, ohhhh, guess what? Peter Parker is dead in both universes where Spider-Man still exists. So if you tell me that Peter Parker may be played by a black guy and he ACTS like Peter Parker, I don't give a fuck what race he is if I still get the same character. I may get stones thrown at me for saying this but it's 2013, give it up people, Doc Ock is Spider-Man now in the comic book world for christ sake, a black actor playing Parker is the least of our problems.

When Foxx got cast as Electro, I was like hmmm, not because of his race, but more of the whole "was that a good character choice?" After Django I'm more than fine with it, I'm not privy to Foxx's work much, but I'm excited for the choice after seeing what he can do. Now Paul Giamatti as the Rhino? That's a real WTF thing.

Johnny Storm is supposed to be this carefree ladies man, a true ass, and if a black actor can emulate this sort of atmosphere, then so be it. But if you choose to have a white actress play Sue, there better be a very solid back story as to how this came about. Audiences will want to know.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that the times are changing like Bob Dylan says, and while we all know what is set in our minds as to what characters look like, three of the biggest "American" superheroes-Spidey, Bats, and Supes are ALL being played by British dudes. So what's to say that they couldn't be played by an actor of a different race?

I mean, a black Batman?

Think how awesome that would be for one fucking second.

If we can embraces Idris Elba playing James Bond then I don't think we can regress so much to say that we can't allow our superheroes some racial change.

As long as they are the same essence of what we know, then let the stones lie as they come and just hope for the best.

I think it is hard for people because since it is illustrated everyone has a rigid idea of what the hero looks like. I mean, have you ever seen a "Cast This" forum on a superhero forum. Its terrible. Completely based on looks with no thought of acting ability at all.

I personally don't care. I think Michael B. Jordan is an excellent choice of Torch and Donald Glover would have been a genius Peter Parker. And while not completely impossible, I still think if they get a black Johnny, they should follow suit with Sue.

You're hitting me with a blast from the past man. I wrote a blog like this, (one of my first) about the merits of casting a black actor to a comic book character that is portrayed as white. It wasn't received all that well but what you're stating is exactly the kind of nonsense that shouldn't be expressed in this day and age.

At the core of it all Comic Book fans as well as casual movie-goers are very elitist. I hate to say that but they are, which is why a lot of people were hard up on Henry Cavill being Superman. They all want their beloved characters to be portrayed the way they're supposed to be, and any kind of change, especially with race, nationality, and region, is often times poorly received as well.

But does it really matter?

I've been accused of being such a purist when it comes to characters but only the characters history, motivation, actions, and such, but never skin color. And you have to take into account that, i'm sorry to say this, but a good number of people are prejudice in real life, and those particular views come out when such an issue of comic changes arise. Now am I saying that every person who may have an issue with a nationality change is deep down a racist? No. But often times there's been a good number of people who don't ever express the actor or actress thats been considered or cast in a particular role because of their talent and if that person can bring justice to the character, no they focus on the skin or the region they come from. Which like Horror said, is pretty ridiculous, especially nowadays.

What you say makes sense and while I agree and encourage such things. I know for a fact that people arent as.....progressive as they themselves think they are. Its a sad fact but its nevertheless true. You can see it in them at times if you look. Maybe that kind of mentality will change one day but ya never know. Great Blog Nevertheless WC!
