I just have to get my feelings out about this. The idea is bad. The Hobbit is one book, one story. There's absolutely no reason to make three movies out of it, especially if they're all going to be 3 hour long epics. It's infuriating enough that studios take the last book in a series and split it into two movies just to make an extra 200 million dollars, and completely sacrifice story in order to do so. But to turn a single story into THREE movies? That's just a slap in the face. Especially since it sounds like this third movie in the trilogy is essentially going to be made up, because it certainly isn't anything from the book. What's the conflict? Once Bilbo returns home, conflict doesn't find him again until The Lord of the Rings, and that conflict has already been shown to us in that movie. For the other characters, what are we getting? Rohan and Gondor aren't on speaking terms and there isn't a war going on (yet) to speak of.
What are we getting? Are we sitting through three hours of set up for The Lord of the Rings? Are we going to witness the destruction of the Mines of Moria? I'm sure they'll find moments that will be fun to show cinematically, but at the same time, do we really want to know? It was the problem with the Star Wars prequel trilogy- we don't want to know where Darth Vader came from. It diminishes him in the original trilogy. He's such a great character, until we find out about his childhood and then he's less interesting. Gandalf reading from the book in the Mines is a fantastic and terrifying scene, because we have NO FUCKING IDEA what went down. If we see it play out, it's going to completely change the effect of that scene.
Obviously I don't know if that's something that's even going into the third movie... but HOW CAN THEY DO THIS? It makes no sense. The story will be complete. And if it isn't, then we're going to be treated to a TON of "Harry and Hermione chilling in a tent and being sad and stuff"-style scenes that will diminish each and every one of these films.
Anyway... that's my two cents. Feel free to disagree and say that I'm missing the point in your comments.
