You liked Side Effects better than The Master?.......

Really enjoyed Side Effects too. Great little thriller.

VitamanMan8
VitamanMan8 at 08:17 PM Feb 28

Yeah I thought Side Effects was better than The Master. The Master is an enigma, and I feel like people are saying it's better than it actually is because they don't fully understand it. But having watched it twice, I feel like it doesn't have the depth of PTAnderson's other films.

85th Academy Awards - Best Picture talk

For Best Picture I was very surprised to see Amour and Beasts of the Southern Wild get nominations. Beasts of the Southern Wild absolutely deserves it and was in my top 5 films of 2012. I haven't seen Amour so I can't speak for how good it is, but it's surprising nonetheless due to the fact that there really hasn't been much of a conversation about it. Seeing as it's the only film nominated for Best Picture that's also nominated for Best Foreign Language Film... I think it's safe to say we know what's going to win for Best Foreign Language Film, while leaves only 8 contenders remaining for Best Picture. Of these, it's hard to say what the frontrunner is. Usually you can look to the Best Director category, where we have Ang Lee for Life of Pi, Michael Haneke for Amour, David O. Russel for Silver Linings Playbook, Steven Spielberg for Lincoln, and Benh Zeitlin for Beasts of the Southern Wild. Since I've already decided Amour is winning Best Foreign Language Film and therefore will not (probably) be winning Best Picture, we have Life of Pi, Silver Linings Playbook, Lincoln, and Beasts of the Southern Wild. Before these nominations were announced I thought for sure that the frontrunners for Best Picture were Zero Dark Thirty and Argo so I guess that shows how much I know about the Oscars.

My pick for the winner of best picture at this point is either Lincoln or Silver Linings Playbook, but it's a toss-up because it could also be almost anything else.

@EP I really didn't like Life of Pi all that much :/ Maybe that's my personal bias kicking in.

@Kevin Smith fan there were only 9 last year, too. They switched up the rules last year so that only movies that got at least 5% of the #1 vote get a nomination, whereas in 2009/2010 they threw in movies that got less than 5% just to fill in the 10.

Strider at 08:24 AM Jan 10

LINCOLN will win Best Picture. Personally speaking, I don't think it deserves to win, because it's very overrated and not quite the masterpiece some people are making it out to be, but it doesn't matter what I think. As I said, it will win Best Picture.

Derek237
Derek237 at 08:35 AM Jan 10

Yeah it's hard to say.. Some years there are basically 2 front runners (like the artist and Hugo last year) but this year it's pretty up on the air, it could go to any at this point. I think on the next few weeks the favored films will become more apparent.

How did you like Saw 3D?

VitamanMan8
VitamanMan8 at 11:42 AM Nov 01

I thought it was one of the weakest in the series. Not the weakest, that honor belongs to Saw V, but probably just above that one.

VitamanMan8
VitamanMan8 at 05:22 PM Nov 03

I've changed my stance on Saw 3D. It is in fact the weakest in the series. The premise of the main game is cool but overall this movie is garbage.

The Lord of the Rings

When people talk about The Lord of the Rings as a film series, there's always at least one person who says "It didn't have to be three movies about walking, why didn't those eagles at the end just fly them to the mountain to begin with?"

Part of the answer is given in The Hobbit, in the chapter "Out of the Frying-Pan into the Fire": The Lord of the Eagles would not take them anywhere near where men lived. "They would shoot at us with their great bows of yew," he said, "for they would think we were after their sheep. And at other times they would be right. No! we are glad to cheat the goblins of their sport, and glad to repay our thanks to you, but we will not risk ourselves for dwarves of the southward plains."

I think it's safe to assume that The Eagles felt this way during LotR as well. At the start of that trilogy, nobody knew that Saruman and Sauron were building an army. By the time they figured it out and could have spread the word to humankind NOT to shoot any eagles passing overhead, the fellowship had disbanded and Frodo and Sam were lost.

You also have to take into account the way Tolkien felt about the eagles since he didn't want to use them as a "cop-out" of sorts, which would've been the scenario if they flew them into Mordor.

The Hobbit Trilogy

I just have to get my feelings out about this. The idea is bad. The Hobbit is one book, one story. There's absolutely no reason to make three movies out of it, especially if they're all going to be 3 hour long epics. It's infuriating enough that studios take the last book in a series and split it into two movies just to make an extra 200 million dollars, and completely sacrifice story in order to do so. But to turn a single story into THREE movies? That's just a slap in the face. Especially since it sounds like this third movie in the trilogy is essentially going to be made up, because it certainly isn't anything from the book. What's the conflict? Once Bilbo returns home, conflict doesn't find him again until The Lord of the Rings, and that conflict has already been shown to us in that movie. For the other characters, what are we getting? Rohan and Gondor aren't on speaking terms and there isn't a war going on (yet) to speak of.

What are we getting? Are we sitting through three hours of set up for The Lord of the Rings? Are we going to witness the destruction of the Mines of Moria? I'm sure they'll find moments that will be fun to show cinematically, but at the same time, do we really want to know? It was the problem with the Star Wars prequel trilogy- we don't want to know where Darth Vader came from. It diminishes him in the original trilogy. He's such a great character, until we find out about his childhood and then he's less interesting. Gandalf reading from the book in the Mines is a fantastic and terrifying scene, because we have NO FUCKING IDEA what went down. If we see it play out, it's going to completely change the effect of that scene.

Obviously I don't know if that's something that's even going into the third movie... but HOW CAN THEY DO THIS? It makes no sense. The story will be complete. And if it isn't, then we're going to be treated to a TON of "Harry and Hermione chilling in a tent and being sad and stuff"-style scenes that will diminish each and every one of these films.

Anyway... that's my two cents. Feel free to disagree and say that I'm missing the point in your comments.

I think it was silly to make it 2 movies long in the first place, even with added content. I mean I'm looking forward to it but 2 was already pushing it. Stretching it out into three (if they actually do that) just seems so silly to me. All I know is that I want it to end, the big dragon climax and all in Part 2 of the Hobbit. I'm down for a third movie made up of content from the other book but two movies is enough for the story of the Hobbit in my mind. This is coming from someone who isn't very educated with the material though, I'll admit I've never read the entire book so yeah lol, that's just how I see it

I totally agree with you on this. Making a trilogy out of one book is a completely bad idea in every sense. Just make it one three hour movie and I will be happy with that. No disrespect to the LOTR trilogy but I can't sit through Three 3-hour plus movies again. I just can't do it.
