Got to say, Iron Man 3 was an interesting way to kick off Phase 2. I went in with low expectations because of the mixed reviews and while I enjoyed the movie, it was definitely disappointing. Will like to see how Thor 2, Cap 2, and GOTG will turn out now.

Avengers Talk

Joss-whedon

Article: Whedon discussed his other projects and The Avengers at length, but regarding the latter did state when Marvel initially approached him that he demanded to do a war movie. He also said he didn't just want it to be a typical good guy vs. similar bad guy flick as well.

"The first thing I said to the people at Marvel was, I want to make a war movie.

A lot of these movies do a beautiful setup and the hero fights a slightly larger version of himself, and it’s clean. I just wanted to dirty it up, I wanted to really put them through their paces. The feeling you get from a good movie like – oh my god it’s still coming, we’re not going to get out of this alive – that’s the feeling I wanted to make."

I really like what he is talking about. What he says about it being a war movie, we can all see in the trailers. It's good that this movie is stepping away from the original superhero movie mold. When you are thinking of what would happen in an Avengers film, wont you want the Avengers to face a major threat that results in a huge clash? Of course. If there wasn't a huge battle or war, then why even get them together?

Comment away about the article or anything else Avenger movie related.

Like the sound of it. It makes sense. Nothing to do with the movie or Joss but as a fan I'm a little bit dissapointed we'll proberly never get to see Scarlet Witch/Quicksilver on the team thanks to bloody rights issues.

The Onion's "Last American Who Knew What The Fuck He Was Doing Dies" Article on Steve Jobs

Stevejobs

Steve Jobs, the visionary co-founder of Apple Computers and the only American in the country who had any clue what the fuck he was doing, died Wednesday at the age of 56. "We haven't just lost a great innovator, leader, and businessman, we've literally lost the only person in this country who actually had his shit together and knew what the hell was going on," a statement from President Barack Obama read in part, adding that Jobs will be remembered both for the life-changing products he created and for the fact that he was able to sit down, think clearly, and execute his ideas—attributes he shared with no other U.S. citizen. "This is a dark time for our country, because the reality is none of the 300 million or so Americans who remain can actually get anything done or make things happen. Those days are over." Obama added that if anyone could fill the void left by Jobs it would probably be himself, but said that at this point he honestly doesn’t have the slightest notion what he’s doing anymore.

To soon, maybe? I am guilty of chuckling a bit...

The Thing 2011 (NO Spoilers)

Thething

Some people who work at Universal got to see the movie and this is a no spoiler version of one of their short reviews of it. Take it with a grain of salt though.

I count "The Thing" as one of my all-time favourite films and I was dubious regarding the prequel. But an opportunity presented itself today and I got to see "The Thing"

What do I think of it?

Really enjoyable even though you think it is going to replicate (hur-hur) the carpenter "The Thing" it steers in the other direction but still keeps a sense of paranoia and tension.

The effects are a mix of Cgi and practical because if you look at the Carpenter film there was no "chasing" after anyone. The Dog Kennel was static , As was the Norris Thing and the Palmer thing was just a guy with a rubber mask. Of course that was effective at the time.
Here there is a bit more action and inter-action with the creature hence why there is Cgi to enhance the confrontation with "The Thing"
split-thing is intense and horrific made only more horrifying by the sound design and music score. And you do get to see assimiliation in progress.

The effects too stay true to the original carpenter especially in the look of how they "thing out" body parts sliding off , opening up , splitting, merging it is done in the same way as the Carpenter film.

What I enjoyed was the little references to the 1982 "The Thing" in a way it is like returning home after a long time away and see that nothing is different - for example the layout of the Norge camp, and the details you remember especially in the final scenes so points are touched on that were left unanswered from the 1982.

You know the ending but when that familiar "heartbeat" sounds you get goosebumps. You just want to see the Carpenter film.

It is not a remake it lives up to it's name as a prequel
The beat might sound the same but it's an all new band playing.

@raz - it's not lazy, it's smart. It's just a business decision because America wouldn't be able to figure out it's related the John Carpenter The Thing movie by themselves

The Thing 2011 (Spoiler)

Splitface

Found this FAQ site on some fan questions of the Thing movie and found out something that could be a description of what would be going on during the prequel.

" Q: What happened to the Norwegian camp?

A: We will perhaps never know the exact sequence of events at the Norwegian base, but we do have some rough ideas. After its escape from the ice block, the Thing had assimilated a number of dogs and humans. Exactly how many is unknown, but the number was at least one dog and one man along with probably a few others. Eventually the surviving Norwegians discovered what was happening but by that time the Thing perhaps had acquired enough numbers to achieve parity with the survivors. Consequently, it may not have felt the need to remain so covert and stealthy.

What apparently ensued was an all-out, no-holds-barred battle that raged throughout the Norwegian camp."

If this was the intention of what happened in the book and the 1982 movie then I am down.

A possible First Class sequel and X4 on the way?

X-men-first-class

All taken from Wikipedia

*Caution* Do not trust Wikipedia as a reliable source.

1. Potential sequels to X-Men: First Class

Fox envisions X-Men: First Class as the first film of a new trilogy. Lauren Shuler-Donner compared the franchise plans to be similar to the darker, more mature content of the Harry Potter film series. While speaking about the sequels, director Matthew Vaughn said, "First Class is similar to Batman Begins, where you have the fun of introducing the characters and getting to know them, but that takes time. But with the second one, you can just get on with it and have a rollicking good time. That’s the main difference between Begins and The Dark Knight."

In a new chat about the film, Vaughn threw around a few ideas regarding a possible sequel to the prequel. On how First Class 2 could open, Vaughn said: *SPOILER* “I thought it would be fun to open with the Kennedy Assassination, and we reveal that the magic bullet was controlled by Magneto.” *END SPOILER* Continuing that a First Class 2 wouldn’t necessarily follow the traditional comic-book sequel route of adding more characters to its roster, Vaughn added;“We will only have one more new character. I won’t say who he… I won’t say who he or she is! But we will only be bringing one more new character in, because, I think, as Professor X is in a wheelchair, Magneto needs to have a nemesis he can fight with. Someone that will be his equal. I know who it is. It would be nice if I could say something, but I can’t, mate!"

Potential sequels to X-Men: The Last Stand

Producer Lauren Shuler Donner reported in August 2006 that renegotiations would be required to continue the main film series. Newer cast members were signed, while the older cast members, including Halle Berry, Rebecca Romijn, Famke Janssen, and Anna Paquin, were not. Berry, James Marsden, and Patrick Stewart have expressed interest in returning, and Bryan Singer was approached once more to direct, but he was busy. Shawn Ashmore stated that he is still contracted for another film featuring Iceman. Tyler Mane and Ray Park have both expressed interest in reprising their roles from X-Men as Sabretooth and Toad, respectively, in future films, although it is unlikely Mane would be asked due to Liev Schreiber taking over the Sabretooth role in X-Men Origins: Wolverine and his commitment to the Halloween franchise. However, as of July 2007, there was no script for a fourth film, and none was in the works.

Later in the month, however, Kevin Feige, president of production at Marvel Studios said that another X-Men film was possible.[83] Donner admitted, "There is forty years worth of stories. I’ve always wanted to do 'Days of Future Past' and there are just really a lot of stories yet to be told." At a Fox Blu-ray press event in Beverly Hills in September 2009, Lauren Shuler Donner stated that she is currently "cooking up plans for" an X-Men 4. However she stressed that it has yet to be pitched to the studio. Shuler Donner later pitched Bryan Singer on doing a fourth installment of the previously established X-Men franchise, following the completion of X-Men: First Class. In March 2011, Shuler Donner revealed that the film was in "active development at Fox," saying, "We took the treatment to Fox and they love it... And X4 leads into X5.

My Thoughts: Sounds all interesting, but I don't know if they should create an X4 and X5 if there is also the First Class trilogy going on. It would be tad confusing for the movie going audience. Though Magneto's rival on the X-Men side sounds REAL interesting. I would really like it to be Gambit, but there is a possible chance that it would be a stronger mutant. What mutant can rival Magneto from the X-Men side? Your thoughts?

The Wolverine was going to be and still is going to be a standalone feature that is not a direct sequel to Origins: Wolverine but will play around in the same universe with the same character. They were never going to 'ignore' Origins: Wolverine, just simply make something that's not directly connected to it, though still is on an underlying level. The Wolverine is a new story, but is still a story of the exact same character in the same universe we witnessed the beginnings of in Origins: Wolverine. Liev Schreiber has expressed interest and planning to return to his role in a future solo Wolverine movie and Jackman has stated that he'd like to see the two characters meet again as well, though obviously it's unlikely with the source material for The Wolverine -- what that says though is that none of them, at least, as 'disregarding' Origins: Wolverine. It may not have been as good as they wanted (who knows what they thought of it) but they obviously thought it was a good basis for something at least, as they both expressed interest in further exploring the relationship of their two characters created there.

Stryker was a big, big part of it and is mentioned not only in First Class but is a major player in X1 and X2 as Wolverine's history is a big part of those movies. I'm not going to debate the rest of it, the Sabretooth thing (though that could easily be explained as we further examine the adventures of both Wolverine and Sabretooth pre-X1), etc. but I find it incredibly obscene to assume that it's NOT apart of the continuity. I mean, there is a lot more evidence that it's a part of the X1/2/3 continuity than there is that it ISN'T a part of it (there is almost zero evidence that it isn't)

That's like having a new Star Wars movie with Harrison Ford as Han Solo as an older man and a ghost of Obi Wan as Alec Guinness and saying 'well don't be so quick to think that it's part of the same continuity!'. You never know, maybe it isn't, but every signal and everything we see points to it BEING a part of the same thing.

As for your example, yeah that M thing holds true but that's so minuscule compared to what we have in Origins: Wolverine and the X-Men movie series. Nevermind the fact that most if not all Bond movies are individual stories with no real continuing plot or connecting tissue between them other than 'Pierce Brosnan Bond movie #1, Pierce Brosnan Bond movie #2, etc' where as with Origins: Wolverine and X1/2/3 there was real connecting tissue between them. Unfortunately with that though comes a struggle to make it all make sense, something which they've obviously had trouble with, but something that still has potential to be corrected (the most obvious/best way in my mind is the idea that Nite Owl presents with the time travel thing)

All in all, the only reasonable thing to assume is that it IS a part of the series until an OFFICIAL statement is made by one of the producers of the entire series (likely someone like Stan Lee). Until that time there is no reason NOT to assume it's apart of the series.

ghostman123
ghostman123 at 08:20 PM Sep 10

I guess it's just easier for me to ignore them in the grand scheme because it makes the movies I enjoy more make more sense. I'm admittedly not a fan of X3 or Wolverine (although I'm less a fan of Wolverine than I am of X3), while I love X1, X2 and First Class. So when you're faced with big continuity errors such as Xavier still being able to walk after he's older and bald (and still friends with Erik) to get Jean Gray, it's just hard to swallow that stuff and still consider it all connected. Make sense?

WP-DFA
WP-DFA at 09:18 PM Sep 10

Yeah I see what you're saying, all that I was saying was if you put away personal opinions on the quality of the individual films away and just look at the facts, they are all still connected and very much part of the same continuity officially, until otherwise stated - which, as far as I know, has not been otherwise stated. ;)

Don't get me wrong I'm sure as you can see I have a problem with all the continuity errors, but it's not my job to make it make sense, it's their job and as explored there is certainly a way for it to work, I just really really hope they choose to explore a path that will have it make sense, instead of continuing making it messier and messier. Fingers crossed.

Comic-Con-less

Vampy-white-phoenix

As much as I want to go to SDCC, I have to keep reminding myself that: 1. It's sold out this year (Sold out DAMN fast...) 2. Expensive as hell (Never stopped me from spending mula at artists ally, but hotel rooms? Shya right...) 3. The crowds suck (The streets in the morning, Hall H lines, and main floor)

Otherwise, I love making fun of the Twi-tards at the Con. My bros and I two years ago were making fun of a guy who dressed up as Edward while we were waiting in line for the Avatar panel. The guy saw us making fun of him which was even better. Kind of mean I know, but the guy looked hysterical.

One more thing, anybody who has been to SDCC, is it just me or do the crowds change during the night life? I see a whole shit load of comic nerds during the day and then when I go out on the city at night, it's like they all bloomed into different people or is that what San Diego is really like at night even without the SDCC craziness?

I've been going to the SDCC every year since 2005. As for your question about the night life, yes and no. The crowd does change in the night (i.e., there's a lot of people who are obviously NOT attending the Comic-Con; they're just there to hit up bars and clubs), but there's still a shitload of Comic-Con attendees in convention area and especially the Gaslamp District. The Gaslamp is ALWAYS packed, Thursday-Saturday, when the Comic-Con is not in town. When the Comic-Con is in town, it's fucking crowded as hell Wednesday-Sunday. Also, you'll see a bunch of Comic-Con attendees at Old Town. It just depends where you go after the Comic-Con has wrapped up for the day. Every year I go, the night life consists of a balance of attendees and regular folk.

No. I live in the L.A. area, about 90 minutes away from San Diego. However, I've been to SD plenty of times when the SDCC is not in town. SD is one of my fave places to hang out. I try to go whenever my wallet allows it.
