Part of me really wanted to like V/H/S what with it being so close to Halloween but it's just too tedious and incompetent to enjoy. And one short in particular pissed me off so much that I want to spoil just so you'll know my rage.

David Fincher Ranked

David-fincher
1. Zodiac - A full on classic. So good it should be studied.
2. The Social Network - Damn good. One of the best of 2011.
3. Se7en - Fincher's true debut. The aesthetic has been ripped off by so many wannabes but this still holds up.
4. Panic Room - A lot of fun and kind of underappreciated.
5. The Game - Slick and cool. A fun, twisty little thriller.
6. Fight Club - Honestly, I think it's overrated. Hasn't aged all that well and kind of cops out in it's own message.
7. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo - Disappointing but entirely servicable.
8. The Curious Case of Benjamin Button - I don't get this movie. At all. It's pretty but it's a tonal clusterfuck.
9. Never seen: Alien 3 - No thanks.

"Bad" is, such a broad term.

In what way bad did you hear, exactly? It should be defined. No it may not be at the level of ALIEN and ALIENS, but it rightfully earns its place within the franchise I feel. By "bad" they must mean "not entertaining", which is true it's not entertaining the way those other 2 movies are. But it's not what Fincher was going for either, it's very much like an arthouse ALIEN movie as opposed to a commercial one. And to most normal movie audiences, that's not palatable.

Personally, I feel ALIEN3 is a spiritual and emotional kind of experience, with a wonderful music score by Elliot Goldenthal to match that tone. I also think it's Sigourney's best acting work in the franchise, maybe even of her entire career!

Visually I also think it's quite an underrated masterpiece, from the art direction to the production design of the sets, albeit with some flawed FX. I think it's still among one of Finchers best-looking movies myself. If you like his work and are a fan of the 1st two ALIEN movies, ya kinda owe it to yourself to check it out.

ALIEN RESURRECTION, now that.......is just plain bad.

topher90 at 06:04 AM Aug 30

While I have not seen the movie, I avoided not because I heard it was bad in a "not entertaining" way. What I had heard that it was a jumbled mess of a plot with haphazard twists. Hell Ebert called it "the best looking bad movie ever", and that was before he went crazy. A movie can be entertaining but still be bad. That said, I may or may not catch this movie in the future. I've got too many classics I need to catch up on before I go watch films like Alien 3.

YoshioKun13
YoshioKun13 at 06:31 AM Aug 30

Alright then.

Yeah, Ebert did say that. He's also the guy who didn't like BLADE RUNNER, HALLOWEEN or A CLOCK ORANGE when they first came out but has since gone back and re-evaluated his stance on some of those now regarded classics. I have a feeling that if he went back to ALIEN 3, perhaps the now existing "Assembly Cut", he may rethink his position on that one a bit. Then again, perhaps not.

That's the other thing too, there's 2 pretty diverse versions of this film. And there's even a 3rd version, the rare *Workprint* cut that has not yet been officially released whch I am watching at this very moment. I'm updating my STATUS with the info about differences in this version compared to the other 2, follow them if you'd like...

Movies I Honestly Wish I Liked More Than I Do

Meh
1. Sucker Punch - It's so close to being great. It's so close but there's so much wrong here. Good, misunderstood intentions though.
2. Last House on the Left (1972) - This movie disappointed me so much I actually hate it now. Wes Craven's stature as a master of horror kind of baffles me.
3. The Brood - David Cronenberg is my favorite filmmaker but man this movie was a chore to sit through. Beyond uninvolving.
4. Easy A - Snark is overrated. I love Emma Stone but this film is not nearly as clever as it thinks it is.
5. The Bourne Trilogy - The first three Bourne movies never clicked with me. They're too dry and dull for my taste. Too serious to be fun, too silly to be compelling.
6. Moulin Rouge - I love musicals and I loved this as a teen but good God is it terrible (except for the Roxanne scene).
7. The Dark Knight Rises - Nolan's attempt at empy spectacle succeeds at being empty. Bane is easily the least interesting villain in the series so far.
8. Reality Bites - As a child of the 90's, this should be right up my alley. Alas, this film is way too narcissistic and Ethan Hawke's character is a generally bad person.
9. Prometheus - Ridley Scott's return to science fiction amounted to a slighty better version of Event Horizon. Why would you bring up such intriguing ideas and not flesh them out.
10. Super 8 - One of the most hyped films of 2011 couldn't overcome a (let's be honest) terrible script.
VitamanMan8
VitamanMan8 at 03:08 AM Aug 28

Sucker Punch wasn't anywhere near good. Nowhere near. It was hundreds of thousands of light years away. It had absolutely nothing going for it. I can't even begin to describe what a waste of time, money, and energy it was.

I don't think Easy A thinks it's brilliant... I think it knows exactly what it is and does it very well.

Totally agree on 7, 9, and 10.

This a great idea for a list!

I definitely must copy it sometime, already have my No. 1 spot locked. I'm sure most here know what that one is...

Yeah, I'll just go ahead and say I wish I liked the entire Nolan DARK KNIGHT trilogy more. I still prefer Tim Burton's vision.

As far as No. 9 goes, I wouldn't even say PROMETHEUS was quite as good as EVENT HORIZON!

New "Stars" Who Haven't Won Me Over Yet

1. Any of the kids from Glee - There's no way around this: I hate Glee. It's so rancid, smug and terribly condescending that I consider it one of the worst big phenomenons on television. That's not fair to the kids, who all seem to be really trying their hardest with these badly written stereotypes masquerading as characters. And the worst part of it is that I don't think any of them are gonna make it beyond Glee. Think about it this way. Do you see Robert Pattison or Taylor Lautner in any big upcoming movies? No, and that's the damage of Twilight (and Pattison being awful). And I fear the same fate for these kids. Only Lea Michele seems to be getting into big movies while the theatrical Glee film bombed. I feel more bad for them than anything. I'd like to be proven wrong and see these kids go on to do things that aren't complete shit but my gut feeling says no. Shame.
2. Channing Tatum - The troglodyte who never quite evolved. Okay that was a bit too mean. Seriously though, the guy has next to no range. Stoic and militaristic? That's our Tatum! And that's about all he is. Breaking onto the scene in the execrable Step Up, the man has yet to show me that he really has leading man status. I don't even know if he's bad, I just don't get it. At all.
3. January Jones - As someone who has never seen an episode of Mad Men, I don't see a very capable actress. I first saw her in American Wedding (where she was bad) and then in X-Men: First Class (where she wasn't very good). Apparantly she was in We Are Marshall. This is news to me. A pretty face and limited range won't get you that far.
4. Zac Efron - He was okay in Hairspray. He was okay in 17 Again. He was okay in Me and Orson Welles. He was...kinda bad in Charlie St. Cloud (not entirely his fault). I don't see a star, I see a sorta charming/sorta bland actor with a nice face and a decent singing voice. What's the big deal?
5. Sam Worthington - Sam's not bad as much as he is one note to me. Now, that may be a little unfair since his last two big movies (Avatar and Clash of the Titans) had him playing Generic Hero but I've yet to see him give a great performance. Maybe he's good in The Ledge, maybe not. As far as modern action heroes go, we already have a Jason Statham. Also his face is like Peter Cetera's voice, in that it hits the sweet spot that just annoys me for some reason. Damn my pettiness!
6. Malin Akerman - Sort of the female Bradley Cooper: Attractive, good in comedies/TV shows, kinda crap in everything else. She was weak link in Watchmen and unbearable in 27 Dresses, Akerman is limited and walks the fine line between charming and breathtakingly annoying. And is it just me or are her eyes incredibly vacant?
7. Bradley Cooper - Okay, dude was pretty funny in The Hangover. He's a funny actor in general. My problem is that some studio heads are diluted into thinking his looks qualify him to be a serious dramatic actor. Apparantly I'm in the minority but I thought Limitless sucked hard and his performance was pretty inconsequential and, honestly, TV-level. He's okay but somewhat limited. Also he looks like a guy I knew in high school that I didn't like very much. Yeah, I can be petty.
8. Julianne Hough - Starting out on Dancing With the Stars, Hough broke through with Footloose. Now she showed some fairly serious dramatic chops...about haflway through the movie. Before that, she was completely artificial and slightly unbearable. She's starring in the almost-guaranteed-to-suck Rock of Ages. Her perpetual cheerleader enthusiasm kind of rings false to me and gets really grating after a while. And she doesn't do much to dispell the idea that dancers make for very boring actors.
9. Liam Hemsworth - Who? My thoughts exactly. He has a fairly big role in the upcoming Hunger Games film and from the steady work he's getting it suggests he's about to explode. I'll be honest, I don't see the appeal. He last big film credits where The Last Song (where he wasn't very good) and Knowing (where he barely had a part). Granted, those movies sucked so he could break through. Call me more cautious than not sold.
10. "Serious" Jonah Hill - A bit of a stretch here but Jonah Hill suppsedly nabbed an Oscar nomination and slimmed down for a career makeover. And he chose to come out of the gates with 21 Jump Street and Neighborhood Watch. Huh? Don't get me wrong, I like Hill but so far he hasn't done or signed on for anything that would suggest he's taking his career in a new direction.

Terminal_83 at 11:14 AM Mar 13

Malin Ackerman has me sold already thanks to her stint on Children's Hospital, and I love Jonah Hill. I think he's talented. The rest I can definitely agree on though. I don't see the big deal with January Jones yet and Sam Worthington blows.

Top 5 Reasons The Avengers Will NOT Suck!

Avengersnerd
1. No Grit - How nice is it that we finally have a return to pulpy, no compromising full on superhero films. People with superpowers USING their superpowers to fight for good. Maybe this is subjective but I'm done with dark. Embrace the asthetic.
2. Marketing - Marvel has been really smart about this by gradually revealing more and more rather than jusy drowning the moviegoers in behind the scene shenanigans and plot spoilers.
3. A New Kind of Superhero Film - The Avengers is gonna do for superhero films what Harry Potter did for fanatsy films. A continuing series with an in-built continuity? Even if it fails, it at least has balls.
4. Extended Superbowl Ad - Killer right? And the ending shot of the Hulk. Thats what summer movies are made of.
5. Casting - Come on. Downey, Evans, Hemsworth, Renner, Jackson, Johansson, ect. Any non-superhero film with that list of credits would be high caliber. That these guys are gonna be flying around in tights with high tech weapons makes it all the better.
JohnLocke2342
JohnLocke2342 at 12:23 AM Feb 08

This is an interesting list and I agree with most of your points, particularly #1. Dark and gritty only works with specific source material and not everything should be that way. Batman is a dark and brooding hero who works best in a cold, grounded landscape with a very serious tone... yet some asshat studio executive thinks "We need to make every superhero movie like that!". A common mistake we've seen from Hollywood producers is exactly that, trying to force everything into a gritty and realistic environment... when some things are just MADE to embrace the fun and roll with it.

It's why Captain America worked so well IMO, it was a throwback to comic-book movies and was all about embracing it's tone and going over the top. The Avengers seems to have bottled that perfect mix in a way that Joss Whedon seems to handle with ease. We need more movies that'll go balls to the wall and live it up as a comic book movie.. this looks like pure geek ecstasy.

Top 5 Reasons Amazing Spider Man Will Probably SUCK!

Garfieldspider__edit_
1. Obvious Cash Grab - The big one. Though no one behind the scenes will admit it, this is just an opportunity for Sony to retain the rights before Marvel comes crashing in and demanding them back. And why put any effort into a new series when you can just implement current trends while simultaneously ripping off the earlier films and call it a day? Bleh.
2. Inconsistent Tone of Trailer - The grit factor doesn't help when half the trailer seems to be going for the campy goofiness of the original cartoon series. Raimi already perfected the campy tone for Spider Man. Why try to replicate it while trying to juggle a hilariously misplaced "dark" tone?
3. "Gritty" Reboot - Word is the script is a gritty sort of ordeal. Out of the gate that's a bad thing. Spider Man does not lend himself to grit. Reluctance, yes but full on Batman Begins style darkness? Sounds like a recipe for disaster.
4. Bad CG - So the ending shot of the first teaser was awful but that was just a trailer shot. The CG in the new trailer does nothing to inspire confidence. The little glimpses of Lizard make him look like a design reject from the Resident Evil canon, a series not widely respected for its technical finesse (for good reason).
5. Director Marc Webb - I like (500) Days of Summer as much as the next metrosexual guy but nothing in his resume (mostly music video dominated) present him as the ideal candidate for a superhero blockbuster. And it shows how uncommitted Sony is to this new reboot by assigning the role of the director to a somewhat new talent.
Cochise
Cochise at 11:02 PM Feb 07

I totally agree with you man, but I'm still open to be surprised by it. The only ones I don't agree on are 4 (I didn't see any faults with it, it didn't look that much better than anything we've seen before but I certainly wouldn't say it's anywhere near 'bad', in fact I thought it was pretty good -- however I'm still real iffy on the Lizard look, I know he looked like that at a certain point in the comics apparently but that's not his iconic look to the general public and personally not his best look... in all honesty he reminds me of one of those creatures from the Super Mario Bros live action movie) and I gotta disagree somewhat with 5 as well. Not saying you're wrong because facts are facts, he hasn't done anything like this but hey the dude has talent and everyone deserves a shot. This is his, if he screws up it'll probably be one of his last, if it's a success then he'll continue to evolve and become a better and better blockbuster director... everyone's gotta start somewhere! And as far as hollywood is concerned music video director = big movie director =P (hey, it's worked so far... somewhat)

topher90
topher90 at 11:09 PM Feb 07

Fair enough on the Marc Webb business. I admit, that part is low because that's one of the aspects I'm more *concerned* about than outright angry. And yeah, music video directors tend to make fine film directors (Hell, David Fincher and Spike Jonze (two of my favorite directors) started out in music videos. When this film is done, I'll still look forward to Webb's next endeavor. Nothing from the trailer shows me any promise that he was the right choice but hey it would be great to be proven wrong. As far as the CGI, I'm also picturing how it will look on the big screen. On computers, it looks decent but projected on a larger screen in a higher definition a lot of the faults become more apparent. Same basic thing happened with Monsters. Thanks for the reading though. Always happy to converse with you :).

Worst Films I Saw in 2011

1. Red State - As a Kevin Smith apologist, this film was a particular blow to me. So terrible that it does a complete 180 and becomes amazing. A mean spirited, confusing and just badly made "satire" the film buffs are sure to admire if they have any affinity for so-bad-they're-amazing movies.
2. Green Lantern - The year's biggest disaster. The bright side to this was that everyone seems to agree how incredibly awful this movie was. Maybe if we're lucky, the studios will take the hint and not half-ass a potential blockbuster next time.
3. Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows - The worst surprise of the year. The camaraderie between Holmes and Watson was diluted into some tired and slightly homophobic banter while Ritchie employs every useless trick he knows to cover up a story that alternates between boring and convoluted.
4. Transformers: Dark of the Moon - Improved cinematography and special effects didn't help this movie's awful script and hammy acting. Can we please end this stupid series?
5. Limitless - TV level acting, a confused/stupid moral, an incoherent plot and amateruish production values made this douchey sci-fi tale nearly unbearable to sit through.
6. Honorable Mention #2: Paranormal Activity 3 - Good God this was dull. Painfully not scary, the only thing this film accomplished was somehow making the other two films even less scary by overexplaining the already thin mythology behind the story.
7. Honorable Mention #1: I Am Number Four: I have to admit this stupid little movie is kind of enjoyable. The writing is lazy and it has all the visual flair of a made-for-TV Lifetime movie but I kinda dig how sincere and silly it is. Plus a bugle turns into an ass-kicking monster. Awesome!

Favorite Films of 2011 (So Far)

1. The Tree of Life - The only film this year that doubled as a movie and an experience. Mesmerising to say the least.
2. Shame - Steve McQueen's hypnotizing exploration of a man's struggle with sex addiction that gave us Fassbender's best performance this year.
3. Captain America - Pulpy and refreshingly well meaning, this was my favorite blockbuster of the year by a longshot. More please!
4. Young Adult - A blisteringly honest look at stunted adolescence in our generation as well as an agressive fuck-you to the young adult books' market.
5. Drive - The cult hit of the year that plays like a remake of the Transporter directed by David Cronenberg. It's cool without being stupid.
6. Midnight In Paris - Allen's most charming work in years and the best comedy of the year.
7. Attack the Block - The be-all, end-all alien invasion/kids on a mission film. If you can't get behind these characters, you might be a racist.
8. Contagion - Sodenbergh's speculative take on a virus outbreak in the U.S. was one of the most frightening films of the year due to it's realism. Smart and timely.
9. 50/50 - Confronting the horrors of cancer with the biting reality of comedy? Nothing short of brilliant.
10. Insidious - Old school, spookhouse horror that cofirms James Wan's status as a genre expert.

Top 10 Films of 2011 That Should Have Been Great (But Weren't)

1. Sucker Punch - Snyder had the chance to reinvent the action genre with his considerable chops but overambition made the film a flat out mess. Though narratively daring and visually stunning, the film never comes together into a cohesive whole. Genuine passion for trying something innovative prevents it from being a terrible movie but half realized characters, inconsistent pacing and a haphazard plot do make it a bad one.
2. Hugo - A good film that should have been a timeless classic. The technical skill, great acting and beautiful message are all brought down by a plot structure that is broken and slipshod.
3. The Artist - Like Super 8, The Artist can emulate the silent movie look and feel flawlessly but fails to do anything meaningful or relevant with that style. Add to that a not-all-that-compelling love story and you have a serious disappointment that film school brats won't shut up about for the next decade.
4. Super 8 - Abrams' near-perfect mimicry of Spielberg's E.T.-like sensibilities fail to distract from a terrible script and lackluster "surprise".
5. The Descendants - A heavy handed book on tape that somehow became a movie. Some great scenes and performances are tarnished by a disconnected story. A good movie but not the frontrunner for Best Picture it's promoted as.
6. Cowboys & Aliens - How do you ruin an amazing premise like this? Play it uncomfortably straight and put the script through a dozen rewrites.
7. J. Edgar - Chalk this up under Eastwood's ever growing list of misses. An overlong SNL sketch masquerading as a biopic.
8. Moneyball - A sports film where math and statistics are valued over brawn and folksy "wisdom"? I'm on board. Unfortunately, a contrived third act and AWFUL pacing took me out of the film.
9. Rango - An ode to spaghetti westerns that suffers from an unfocused script and uninteresting lead. Great animation wasted.
10. In Time - Actually a pretty good movie but considering the pedigree of the director and the all-too-relevant message I expected it to be a little less sloppy.
