Mel Brooks once said, "Bad taste is simply saying the truth before it should be said". I'll go ahead and say it, guys: People who say they don't like Attack the Block because the leads were "thugs and unrelatable" are possibly racist and don't even know it.
That would a fine counterpoint if it weren't for the fact that the film goes out of it's way to create hugh character arcs that the make the characters sympathetic and three dimensional (especially Moses). When the film started, I felt nervous that our lead characters were criminals. Once the film set up it's premise and the fact that it's also a revealing satire on the whole class war going on in Britain at the moment, I was 100% behind these characters.
Yeah that's fine. That's the point of the film. My point is that by going off the trailer I can see why some people wouldn't wanna see the film and LIKE I SAID the kids are all different races in Attack The Block. People may not wanna see the film because the kids come as 'hoodies or thugs' in the trailer. Not because Moses and some of his friends happen to be black.
I think there was a minor bit of miscommunication here. I was just referring to people who had SEEN Attack the Block and still didn't like it because of the reasons above.
Sorry, I did read your post wrong. I still gotta say though I don't think race comes into it. My mate saw it, my black friend btw and he didn't care for it or the characters. I haven't seen Attack The Block. Now correct if I'm wrong, by all means put me right but I was told they kick a baby alien to death? That right there, I dont wanna see shit like that.
It's not that gruesome and isn't that "shocking" in terms of the film's tone. I won't be "that guy" who says you have to see it but it makes sense in context and the movie, like I said, has a lot to say about race and class warfare. It also has wicked cool aliens and gripping action scenes to go with it.
The UK is just one major class warfare at the moment. Either your rich and sorted or your fucked. Lol.
I strongly disagree with that. There's a 'hoodie' culture in the UK and it's the center of a lot of crime and sadly death in the UK. It has NOTHING, I REPEAT - ZERO- to do with race, it's the whole issue of the gangs and the crimes that happen that could put some people off the film and I can understand why. I think what you said is way off the mark.
