Nostalgia Critic reviews Ponyo? Hmmmm, this intrigues me.
Mel Brooks once said, "Bad taste is simply saying the truth before it should be said". I'll go ahead and say it, guys: People who say they don't like Attack the Block because the leads were "thugs and unrelatable" are possibly racist and don't even know it.
The UK is just one major class warfare at the moment. Either your rich and sorted or your fucked. Lol.
Just watched Ghost Dog for the first time. It's quite a fascinating film. Dated but still engaging.
Things I Inexplicably Hate

So there are some reports saying Michael Fassbender is possibly a domestic abuser who broke his ex-girlfriend's nose. If this turns out to be 100% true, fuck him. Truly and honestly, fuck him.
They did and they are, in my opinion, just bad people. I respect their talents and I'm usually not one to protest a movie based on someone in it (separate the art from the artist and whatnot) but domestic abuse is one of the most low, unforgivable and cowardly things a person can do to another person.
I like Penn he seems sorry (as well he should) and he and Madge appear to be on good terms. Don't like Connery, always thought he was a cock.

I'm not completely sold on Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter. Every time I get optimistic about it, the words "Snakes on a Plane" pop into my head.
Eating cookies while browsing the internet sounds good on paper but I always feel like somehow I failed at life when I do.
The Woman in Black First Impressions and the Problem With First Acts
So I went to see The Woman in Black last night and ended up walking out after an hour. This wasn't a detriment to the film, I was with a friend who had a mild medical condition that forced us to leave. I definitely would have stayed through the movie if I had the chance but I didn't have any major qualms about walking out. Truthfully, the film kinda bugged me but in ways that left me a bit confused.
Off the bat, the film had two flaws that were annoying me. Firstly, the set design of the mansion was quite underwhelming. In these types of films, the "haunted house" needs a expansive and barren quality. This mansion just felt too small and too cluttered. The sound design and Radcliffe do their damnedest to make it look creepy but it just doesn't translate. Maybe this was an effort to have a more "realistic" portrayal of a mansion in this era but it doesn't support the horror aspect. Another problem was the editing. Now I'm the LAST person to complain about modern filmmaking trends but the editing here is just too fast. Too many scenes cut to odd angles in lieu of letting the scene just play out. Its not a deal breaker but more of a nagging flaw.
But those pale in comparison to the major flaw. I walked out after a good solid hour and the first act was just ending. The characters were done being introduced and the film was finally getting into it's second act. That's ridiculous. A 90 minute movie where abut 75% is build up? Maybe it justifies it with a balls-out ending (something along the lines of what Insidious did) but reviews I've read lead me to doubt that. It's not that I don't like slow movies that pace their time. I do, but aside from a couple stand out scenes The Woman in Black's first act is mostly exposition and foreshadowing. There's a subplot with Radcliffe and his son but that comes off as character development or a possible misdirection. Either way, I feel slightly robbed when I pay $10 for a film that is mostly build-up.
And this is a problem that isn't unique to this film. It's fairly common one and that's what makes it all the more aggravating. I like the film, but the first hour of Inception is a chore to sit through and I firmly believe that the film is not that re-watchable. I'm no fan of the generic three act structure but at least films that adhere to this tend to move at a good pace. This is why people hate The Haunting remake in '99. Most of the damn movie is just figuring out what the story is.
Hacky screenwriters have a tendency to believe that they have to explain EVERY aspect of their story for fear of being called out for plot holes. Here's the thing, plot holes are forgivable if the story, characters, situation, ect. is good enough. People who get hung up on minor plot holes say they love movies, but truthfully they just love proving movies wrong. Good job, you've bested a piece of celluloid. Well worth your time.
Films are visual for a reason. A properly constructed shot can say way more about a character than a page worth of exposition. Think of the first shot of Orson Welles in The Third Man. Do we really need half an hour of him explaining himself to "get" what kind of person he is. No, the shadows, camera angles and Cotten's reaction is all we need. You can watch the scene out of context and still get that. Please, if I paid to see a movie then show me a movie. I already watched the trailer, you've convinced me. Don't be a tease.
EmbarassedConfession: Even though it's not as good technically, I sincerely believe SLC Punk! is a better movie than Fight Club.
Top 5 Reasons The Avengers Will NOT Suck!

This is an interesting list and I agree with most of your points, particularly #1. Dark and gritty only works with specific source material and not everything should be that way. Batman is a dark and brooding hero who works best in a cold, grounded landscape with a very serious tone... yet some asshat studio executive thinks "We need to make every superhero movie like that!". A common mistake we've seen from Hollywood producers is exactly that, trying to force everything into a gritty and realistic environment... when some things are just MADE to embrace the fun and roll with it.
It's why Captain America worked so well IMO, it was a throwback to comic-book movies and was all about embracing it's tone and going over the top. The Avengers seems to have bottled that perfect mix in a way that Joss Whedon seems to handle with ease. We need more movies that'll go balls to the wall and live it up as a comic book movie.. this looks like pure geek ecstasy.
Top 5 Reasons Amazing Spider Man Will Probably SUCK!

I totally agree with you man, but I'm still open to be surprised by it. The only ones I don't agree on are 4 (I didn't see any faults with it, it didn't look that much better than anything we've seen before but I certainly wouldn't say it's anywhere near 'bad', in fact I thought it was pretty good -- however I'm still real iffy on the Lizard look, I know he looked like that at a certain point in the comics apparently but that's not his iconic look to the general public and personally not his best look... in all honesty he reminds me of one of those creatures from the Super Mario Bros live action movie) and I gotta disagree somewhat with 5 as well. Not saying you're wrong because facts are facts, he hasn't done anything like this but hey the dude has talent and everyone deserves a shot. This is his, if he screws up it'll probably be one of his last, if it's a success then he'll continue to evolve and become a better and better blockbuster director... everyone's gotta start somewhere! And as far as hollywood is concerned music video director = big movie director =P (hey, it's worked so far... somewhat)
Fair enough on the Marc Webb business. I admit, that part is low because that's one of the aspects I'm more *concerned* about than outright angry. And yeah, music video directors tend to make fine film directors (Hell, David Fincher and Spike Jonze (two of my favorite directors) started out in music videos. When this film is done, I'll still look forward to Webb's next endeavor. Nothing from the trailer shows me any promise that he was the right choice but hey it would be great to be proven wrong. As far as the CGI, I'm also picturing how it will look on the big screen. On computers, it looks decent but projected on a larger screen in a higher definition a lot of the faults become more apparent. Same basic thing happened with Monsters. Thanks for the reading though. Always happy to converse with you :).
Guess I'll be in the minority again for The Amazing Spider Man trailer. I can't decide if it looks Fantastic Four bad or Green Lantern bad.

It's not that gruesome and isn't that "shocking" in terms of the film's tone. I won't be "that guy" who says you have to see it but it makes sense in context and the movie, like I said, has a lot to say about race and class warfare. It also has wicked cool aliens and gripping action scenes to go with it.
