No, Evil Dead was not great. No, Evil Dead was not "good". No, Evil Dead wasn't even bad. What it was though, was a great sight to see. Practical FX is an art form long forgotten that I loved seeing in full capacity for 90 minutes. Evil Dead has plenty of blood, gore, and gross outs. I thoroughly enjoyed myself, and had the most fun I've had in the theater so far this year.

Arthur

Arthur-poster1

Directed by: Jason Winer
Written by: Peter Baynham
Cast: Jennifer Garner, Russell Brand, Helen Mirren, Nick Nolte, Greta Gerwig, Luis Guzman
Studio: Warner Bros
Genre: Comedy
Official Site: www.arthurmovie.com
Plot: A drunken playboy stands to lose a wealthy inheritance when he falls for a woman his family doesn’t like.

Review:

Based off of the 1981 film of the same name, Arthur focuses its attention on a drunken but wealthy man who comes to a fork in the road of his life, where he has to choose either love or prosperity. The thing about this film that makes this simple choice interesting, is that our main character Arthur Bach is very eccentric and young at heart. The actor chosen to play this character may be a bit of obvious casting, however I did not find from the trailers that it was a very wise decision in choosing Russell Brand. The trailers definitely play Arthur off as being more of a straight-forward comedy than it really is, and ultimately ends up being about as “chick flick” as it gets. Fortunately for the guys out there the eccentricity of our main character is enough to generate laughter for the entire film, but for the gals I can’t say there’s much here in terms of a quality romance. It’s odd that the film was marketed as a comedy, most likely to disguise its romantic comedy traits, and as it turns out there may have been a reason in hiding it. However, the audience I saw the film with thoroughly enjoyed this retelling of the 1981 comedy classic, and Russell Brand is without a doubt the reason why...[more]...

I had high hopes for this until I saw the trailer, and thought the same as you, it really looked awful... If you're a fan of anything Russell Brand, I don't think you'd be disappointed with this one. It's not the best movie in the world, but it's definitely a success for Brand in a lead role... Unfortunately Greta Gerwig single-handedly ruins anything this movie had going for it, in terms of quality of story.

Thanks though! Hope it helped.

Outstanding and well in-depth review Threezy Breezy! I didnt have too much of an interest in seeing this film and now I KNOW i'm not watching it based on your review. To be honest with you, when I saw the trailer I also thought Garner would've been better in Naomi's role instead of Greta. So its nice to know you felt the same way...

How dare they make my former lover a bitch...No sirrybob! Not having it...so, i'll watch this if it comes on Netflix instant watch.

Thanks buddy Changes23! Glad you pre-felt the same way I do. ;] Lol, but yeah definitely just a flop in terms of story. Good for a few laughs, otherwise easily forgettable.

Arthur was not as bad as I expected it to be. Not a complete trainwreck, and surprisingly Russell Brand was perfect for the role. He did a damn fine job, but I can't say the same for Greta Gerwig. Review pending...

Watching a lot of The Spectacular Spider-Man recently... Batman and Spider-Man cartoons are always winning.

Animal Kingdom

Animalkingdom-poster-3

Directed by: David Michd
Written by: David Michd
Cast: Ben Mendelsohn, Guy Pearce, Joel Edgerton, Luke Ford, Jacki Weaver
Studio: Sony Pictures Classics
Genre: Crime, Drama, Thriller
Official Site: www.sonyclassics.com/animalkingdom
Plot: Tells the story of seventeen year-old J (Josh) as he navigates his survival amongst an explosive criminal family and the detective who thinks he can save him.

Review:

A movie with the title Animal Kingdom may not get the recognition amongst the common movie-going audience as a film that is anything outside of an animal documentary in today’s recurring nightmare of 3D. Instead, Animal Kingdom is writer/director David Michôd’s first endeavor into feature film with only experience in documentaries and shorts. What makes this film deserving of being recognized and watched by anyone, is that it is without a shadow of a doubt, by far one of the best movies of 2010. If I could go back now to change my end of the year list for best of the year, I would rank it within my Top 5. It’s a movie that takes off from the get-go and puts you right into the shoes of our main character J, and what he has to experience with the instant changes in his life. The film drives hard for nearly 110 minutes, and from the opening scene builds tension until the final second of the film. I would consider Animal Kingdom amongst one of the best crime dramas in the last 5 years, and without a doubt now ranks highly in being one of my favorites of all-time...[more]...

Half.com burns a hole right through my pocket, into my leg. 6 24: Declassified books, 4 LOST books, 30 Days of Night book, Borderlands and Resident Evil 5. $68

I wasn't aware there were novels either, but apparently there are 4. 3 of which go with the story that was presented with the television show, and if I'm not mistaken maybe adds more characters or something. The fourth book is like a half-fiction/farce thing where it's "supposedly" written by the last remaining survivor of the Oceanic flight about his experience.

http://lost.wikia.com/wiki/Novels - link for more info, but I ordered all 4. I'll let ya'll know how they are!

@randychico is right, and I'm on a mission to find all books relating to my favorite famous media! Lol.

Oh damn, I thought you just meant 4 books that were featured in the show itself, like "Turn of the Screw", "Watership Down" or "Carrie"!

I didn't know there were actual 'real' LOST novels...

I'd like to read the novels featured in the show as well, as I'm sure it has some sort of influence to the show or explanation to it.

Faster

Faster-poster-1

Directed by: George Tillman, Jr.
Written by: Joe Gayton, Tony Gayton
Cast: Dwayne Johnson, Billy Bob Thornton, Maggie Grace, Moon Bloodgood, Carla Gugino
Studio: CBS Films
Genre: Action
Official Site: www.fasterthemovie.com
Plot: An ex-con sets out to avenge his brother’s death after they were double-crossed during a heist years ago. During his campaign, however, he’s tracked by a veteran cop and an egocentric hit man.

Review:

To some, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has made many questionable film choices in the last five or so years, but being that I’ve been a fan of his for quite awhile, I can’t say that I agree. While he may have dove deep into the family genre and made two or three movies that were silly of an ex-WWE superstar, he always made them his own. There’s an undeniable characteristic that “The Rock” has in any movie to make it charismatic and entertaining relative to the character he is playing. Obviously, action movies have always been his strong suit, and Faster makes him return to the genre after a five to eight year vacation depending on what you consider his last “true” action movie: Southland Tales [2006], Doom [2005], Walking Tall [2004], or even The Rundown [2003]. Faster however gives us Dwayne Johnson at possibly his darkest and most involved in the action he’s ever been, and it really marks the return of a future action hero. Starring a few other people as well, Faster manages to create a fast-paced action thriller that unfortunately lacks in originality beyond the point of Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s character...[more]...

Amy Adams is Lois Lane? I'm totally down with that, perfect choice. She wows me every time in The Fighter, and I mean.. I'm not going to see the new Superman movie for Superman anymore... I'm going to see Lois Lane.

I ended up seeing Battle: Los Angeles today instead of Sucker Punch, and boy am I glad for it. Battle: LA was freakin' awesome, unexpectedly a great flick, and Aaron Eckhart sure rolled in a great role.

Seriously can't decide whether I want to catch up with Battle: Los Angeles, or give Sucker Punch a shot this afternoon... After the miserable reviews for the latter, it's made for a really tough decision.

Battle: LA was decent and from what I hear Sucker Punch is a love it or hate it affair, which could be fun either way.
