When I first saw ads for Zombieland, I thought of the video game Dead Rising. An over the top, fun filled couple hours that make light of the humor that could come from a zombie apocalypse. A film that doesn't take itself too seriously. One that anyone can sit down and just enjoy the humor, get a few chills and walk out knowing that was money well spent. That's exactly what I got.
What I liked the most about Zombieland was that it didn't try to be something it wasn't. Everytime you felt a scene was getting too deep or that it was switching to the romance angles, something would happen. Whether it be a zombie run in or just a quick little line from another star, the film would get right back to making you laugh and squeal.
I believe without a shadow of a doubt, this is the funniest film Woody Harrelson has starred in since Kingpin. Heck, it might be even better than Kingpin. Either way, Woody did everything he needed to do to make you laugh and make your jaw drop. In one scene, he'll be making you laugh just with his wit, while the next scene will have you screaming "WTF?!?" from a creative, albeit, over the top zombie kill.
Jesse Eisenberg is essentially the same character he played in Adventureland, but I think the role suited him more here. The anxious virgin who is so anal that you would probably ring his neck if you spent too much time with him. The filmmaker must have known this because it seemed every other role in this film got annoyed with him after a while.
When it all comes down to it, this movie is about the Zombies and the zombie kills. Never before has there been as much creativity in a zombie movie where the graphics were top notch and the kills were just spot on. Almost every way you could think of as to how to kill a zombie is done here, than done over again twice as absurd.
Zombieland gave me everything I wanted out of it. I didn't want it to be so comical it got stupid, but I didn't want it to be a direct horror movie either. It found that middle ground that left me extremely satisfied and bleeding from the mouth for more.
