Dead Shadows pre prod done today, here we fucking go!

Dsblog2t

Today is the last day of pre-prod on DEAD SHADOWS (French film I’m acting in and pitching in as to the action scenes) so I figured I’d punch in and write some shit down. Monday the battle begins as we enter production. How do I feel? Confident. There’s a solid team behind this flick, both in front of the camera and behind the scenes and it has all the ingredients to be a stand out film, starting with a sturdy screenplay as its base, sweet practical effects, a great visual effect house backing it up and a production/creative team who are willing and able to fight.

How has Paris been to me? Pretty good. Although I’ve been to Cannes countless times in the past; I had never been to Paris; so far the bad rap I heard from some peeps is undeserved from my point of view. People have been nice, haven’t gotten in a fight and bar employees are also pretty money (they were dicks in Cannes though, should be spat). Am feeling very comfortable here, somewhat at home. Am used to it now. Haven’t had time to play tourist much (did see The Louvre and drive by the Eiffel Tower like everyday). NOTE: They drive like New Yorkers down here…yowzer!

My days have been long, in the sense that since I got here, I’ve been hustling all day and then coming back to my pad (in Bastille) to work the site and work a script I have been commissioned to write. Haven’t been sleeping much. Physically, the training kind of slowed down here for obvious reasons – no time. I lost some weight which I am not happy about (wanted to be bigger for the role), and if I go by past productions, I will lose some more as we run on adrenaline throughout the shoot. What can you do. I have lots of night shoots too… makeup girls don’t fail me now!

In terms of my role, I am prepared, I know my lines, got my beard in place (itchy), am handling the French dialogue well (got a couple of tongue twisting bits though), I know my key fight choreography (which I designed and am handling on set), so I am ready. Am also bringing boxing gloves and focus pads on set to loosen in between takes and got the Conan score (Crom!) and some Metallica on my IPod to keep me in the “proper” mood. Yeah my character is no Florist. All good. Jumping into a movie is always exciting, nerve wracking to some, but not for me. It’s just exciting. Yes, obstacles will be tossed our way, left, right and center, but I think that the Dead Shadows team is ready for them. So yup, Monday is Judgment day, lets make a fucking movie! A L’ATTAQUE!

PS: I know the Habs are starting their Season soon. Tried to watch the pre season games online…no dice! Grrr.

PPS: They have ice rinks here (although ice skating is not considered masculine here, just like In Spain… cracks me up, lets toss ya on the ice with a hockey stick, tell me its not masculine as you kiss the boards :) Must get on skates and keep my skills up. Once back home, it’s back on the ice I go!

PPPS: Am almost out of Conan comic books to read... must find more, am addicted...

PPPPS: I can think of worse ways to spend my days than slicing and gunning down mutants. Sometimes I love my life; this is one of them times. Will try to keep yall in the loop as we clock forward. Peace out!

The Arrow’s Manly Man “will fuck you up” Cowboy beans.

Yeehaw2

Ingredients:

-2 cups of dried pinto beans
-2 Tbsp of vegetable oil
-1 yellow onion, chopped up crudely
-5 sliced up garlic cloves, chopped up crudely. This is a man's dish. Nothing fancy.
-Get a fuck load of Ham chunks and I mean chunks!
-2 cups of water
-2 cups of black coffee
-1 1/2 cups BBQ sauce
-1/4 cup hot peppers/jalapeños
-1 Tbsp of salt

How To:

Toss the beans in a big pot. Add water so they’re submerged by an inch. Boil that shit and simmer for 25 minutes. Then drain em.
In another big pot, heat the vegetable oil at medium-high. Add the onions; stir that shit up for 3 minutes. Slap in the garlic cause its good for ya and stir for another 3 minutes!

Then you pour the beans in the pot with the vegetable oil, onions, and garlic. Toss the ham chunks in there, do it violently like you mean that shit. Then toss the water, the salt, the peppers/jalapeños and the coffee in there too. Stir the fuck out of it and bring to a simmer. Cook for about an hour. Then add the BBQ sauce, stir, cover the pot and let it simmer on low heat for about 2 hours.

Then BOOM you’re set! ENJOY! The dish is high on protein and fiber. You will feel lighter after a couple of days but there is a price for that; get ready to take up residence in the bathroom. YEEHAW!

The Arrow's diet!

Weider-muscle-builder-300x300

A Schmoe recently asked me how I lost the weight I had on me (which I gained after I got really sick) and I figured I'd share my answer, just in case somebody else is interested.

NOTE: This is solely about what I eat, not the exercise I also do.
NOTE 2: My plan is not only about losing weight, it's also about eating healthy to be healthy.
NOTE 3: I have a medium speed metabolism.

-I wake up and have a glass of warm water with one table spoon of lemon juice in it and a drop of honey. That helps cleanse my system.

-Then I have a protein shake within half an hour of having gotten up. I use Weider Muscle Builder Protein, my fav brand.

-Then I have breakfast (usually an egg sandwich with onions and tomatoes, or eggs with toast). I only have bread in the morning. The rest of the day I don't touch bread or any derivatives.

-For lunch I have a salad, sometimes with chicken, sometimes with eggs, sometimes with Tuna. And I also have fruits but never after 2PM (fruit has a lot of sugar).

-And for supper I have lean meats (chicken, steak etc.) and an aside of vegetables (no fries, no mash potatoes).

-If I am hungry throughout the day, I snack on Rocky Cookies which are very good for you. Snacking helps keep your metabolism working. Recipe here: http://www.john-fallon.com/?p=1288

That's pretty much it in terms of dieting. High on protein, low on carbs. Before adopting this diet regimen, I weighted 225 pounds... I now weigh 190 pounds.

-Needless to say that low cal beers is the way to go. Personally, I now only drink booze on weekend.

-Coffee is actually good to lose weight, it speeds up your metabolism, but no more than 3 cups a day as coffee also promotes water retention.

-I lay off the junk food, and if I drink Soda, I get diet or with ZERO Calories.

-If you have a sweet tooth like I do, I buy weight watchers desserts (brownies, cookies etc) and stick to one treat a day (the earlier you eat it, the better).

-When I buy shit, I look at the amount of calories but ALSO the amount of saturated fat, trans fat, sugar and sodium (which makes your body retain water hence giving ya that bloated look). Go as low as you can go on those...

It's a bit hard at first, specially if you like to eat but you get used to it. Your stomach shrinks on this and eventually craves less food.

Hope this helps some of ya!

John

This is far too strict for me, and probably for a lot of schmoes who want to lose weight. I dropped from 240 to 180 over the course of a year by simply cutting out soda and snack food, and working out every other day for about a half hour. Other than that I kept my diet the same and it worked for me.

My short film The Red Hours, now available on DVD!

Redhoursdisk11

“Fallon’s film is visually stunning and for the most part contains a wicked visual appeal toward it that garners some memorable scenes including some fast paced chase sequences, and stunning sweeping pans on our sexy actresses, all of whom are empowered more by Fallon’s fetishistic visual flourishes and camera angles than their uniforms and hand held weapons.” – Cinema Crazed

And it’s the end of a long journey. THE RED HOURS has been with me for 11 years now. It started off as a feature length script, which led to a painful education as to lying, spineless and crooked producers. After years of development hell, stars attached, false promises and constant let downs, I got the rights back to my script and gave up on getting the feature off the ground. Years went by, other projects happened, but I still had some nagging Red Hours in me, it was bothering me and I needed to let it out.

And that’s when a short version of what used to be a feature was born. That resulted in another kind of battle, but at least it was one that had me surrounded with good peeps and one that I could fight and win. So today, my short film THE RED HOURS is available for purchase worldwide via a limited release. There are only 100 copies available (the DVD sleeve is signed by lead Deke Richards and myself) and it costs 12.99 CAD plus taxes and 4 bucks of shipping and handling.

The Red Hours is about: A quiet war is transpiring between lovers Mark (Deke Richards) and Natasha (Amy Wickenheiser). The more mature and old fashion Marc can’t come to terms with his better half being bisexual hence he’s constantly feeling hurt and resentful. On her end, Natasha feels criticized and un-accepted, consequently finding comfort in the arms of her lover Drew (Heather Westwood). One fateful night at a lowly dive bar, the quiet war between the two finally explodes, resulting in a soiree of blood, chainsaws and bullets.

The short stars Deke Richards, Amy Wickeneiser and Heather Westwood. It was written, produced and directed by me. It was produced and DOPd by Donny Broussard. And it was edited by Michael Nouryeh and Christian Viel. It was a long freaking road to get this little film shot, edited and now on DVD. Every obstacle you can think of was shoved our way. I learned a lot through this experience and yes it is with a sigh of relief and a feeling of “completion” that I write this FINAL The Red Hours blog entry. A big THANK YOU to everybody that supported me through this venture. It took way longer than I thought it would to get done, but hey, all good, it’s now motherfucking done. AMEN.

Best school essay ever written about AITH and myself.

Aithman2

Over the course of running Arrow in the Head for 11 years I have been the subject of many of our readers homework usually by way of an interview. After a while; I started refusing to do them, feeling like I was doing peeps homework for them and hey, I paid my dues in that respect. But recently, for reason unknown, I said “lets do it” to AITH reader Collin Walter Breaux and he has since sent me his paper.

Am posting it here cause of all the school papers that were written about me or/and the site over the years; this one was my fav. In depth and compelling and for me, its always interesting to get a totally unbiased outside perspective as to what I do on the site that goes beyond you rock or you suck. Read on! NOTE: The dude got an “A” (as he should) and his professor said the essay was “thought-provoking”. That’s a wise teach!

I Scream, You Scream, We All Scream: “Arrow In the Head” As Horror Movie Buff

By Collin Breaux – English 4151 – 5/6/11

Off in some far corner of the web lurks a cult writer who champions the cultural value of horror movies. Much like the victims in the movies, the genre is often attacked: it’s seen as a violent distraction and utterly undeserving of any sort of further critical analysis. But there’s a man who goes by the nom de guerre “Arrow In the Head” (his real name is John Fallon and he, in fact, also acts in such movies) who validates the idea of horror film criticism. The namesake was, as Fallon explains, “what my buds called me” and “was the first thing that popped in my noggin”, if that will give you any indication of what’s to come as I analyze his writing style. More mainstream critics have been less welcoming of the horror genre. Roger Ebert has stated, “After watching all the films on AFI’s 100 Greatest Movies list, one would no longer have the desire to see a Dead Teenager Movie,” referring to his own lingo for the horror genre. But Arrow sees much more promise within horror: “It’s no coincidence that some of our most respected filmmakers (Spielberg, Oliver Stone, Kubrick, James Cameron) developed their craft via horror films as it’s a genre that allows lots of room in terms of taking chances on a story level, audio/visual wise and in tackling bold themes (that can often act as metaphors for current social issues)”.

Boasting in his logo that he’s been “online since 2000”, his writing style can best be described as quirky and idiosyncratic. His prose veers somewhere between a distracted, reckless teen with ADD and a more thoughtful observer in the Leonard Maltin mode. Other writers assist him on the site (mainly with news headlines and podcast interviews) but this is mostly Fallon’s project. You can see his more casual and flippant side show through when he posts an impassioned editorial colorfully called “F*ck The Crow Remake! Give Us a Director’s Cut!”: “So after 3 ho-hum sequels and one lame TV Show, in my book; unless they went the ‘female Crow’ route with the franchise; there was no point in continuing it.” (This was also noted as one of the most popular features on the site for the week.) Despite his approach, it’s obvious he’s an intelligent reviewer. In fact, he may be aware enough to know how to connect to his audience (by directly appealing to them in the most haphazard of ways) and parlay his image of an excited fan into that of widespread accessibility. Take note of this more nuanced and thoughtful observation earlier in the same column: “This movie itself addressed themes that I am very close to: true love, death and revenge and I’ll be honest, I teared up many o times during that first watch.”

It’s Alive!: Horror Throughout the Ages

But this genre has its roots deep in history, and it also invites further philosophical and psychological considerations. Let’s remember all the way back to the dark side of the Romantic movement, which saw Edgar Allan Poe penning tales and poetry of the macabre. Now go further and remember the dawn of the twentieth century and the invention of a curious little technology called cinema, where some of the first movies made were the expressionistic film The Cabinet of

Dr. Caligari (a forerunner of the horror genre to come), as well as screen adaptations of the classic Gothic novels Frankenstein and Dracula. Then horror got grittier and more confrontational, reflecting the counterculture of the 60s and 70s questioning the traditional values of the time. Night of the Living Dead featured blatant cannibalism onscreen, while the flower child ethos itself got a rude wake-up call in the Southern backwoods as seen in The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. All of that has led to the style that’s arguably taken hold now, the so-called “slasher”, and with it the offshoot; what’s hip with the kids today, “torture porn” like Saw and Hostel. Franklin Roosevelt once said, “The only thing we have to fear is fear itself,” and clearly this catharsis of dread has been with us throughout the ages.

So Arrow In the Head isn’t far off the mark (if you’ll excuse the pun). Dennis L. White observes this trend in an essay exploring the formalistic properties of the horror genre. “It must be more than just the unity of a life such as that of a mad doctor; of an act, such as his crimes or experiments, of a place, such as the castle where he conducts his experiments.” (White 5-6). As one can see, much work has to go into the creation of a horror movie, as above all it is seeking to evoke a certain mood, that of fear or dread.

In that case, because it primarily invites an emotional reaction, intense observation of it is almost required to sustain the genre, and perhaps that’s where Arrow comes in. He fulfills a vital role: by describing his gut reaction to it, we can perhaps make sense of it. Horror also plays on not just the thrill of voyeurism and action but also tugs at more ancient anxieties: “If a film is to frighten us it must use elements that are genuinely frightening: in the case of Psycho, not just an old dark house, but the madness of a man like Norman who lives in that house-not just murder, but the kind of death from which there is no protection, no warning, and no escape” (7). Trying to grapple with these heavy and chilling realizations by ourselves is a heady task, but Arrow can serve as a seer. By pointing out which elements of a horror movie may work and which don’t, as a critic he can help us make sense of it. This element of helplessness also illuminates the reason behind his wanton breaking of literary rules. If the horror genre is to sweep us up in a tide of inevitability, it only makes sense that this fatalistic and irreverent attitude should seep into Arrow’s writing style. When interviewing the star of the movie Sniper Reloaded, here’s how he described the process: “I recently had the chance to trade punches with Collins as to all that was the Sniper Reloaded experience; and here’s what the dude left-hooked my way!” Sounds kinda brutal, eh? His persona adapts the tone the movies achieve. Is there any greater example of a writer truly understanding the needs of his field?

I guess horror movies can be tied to my own personal history as well. As a child I recall sitting on the couch with my mother as twilight fell, watching classic horror movies like The Wolfman together. She doesn’t care for the new, bloodier style of horror films; her heart will always lie with the antique monster flick. As I grew older and became a teen my brother then showed me Halloween. Ah, I’ll never forget that shrieking score. Just lying in his bed and watching the faceless Michael Myers leap out from the shadows always perturbed me.

With a taste for the more lurid side of cinema, I stumbled across Arrow In the Head about eight or nine years back, when I was in high school He showed me the way to not just obscure 80s slashers, but also the more experimental side of the horror genre. Through him, I found out about a film called The Minus Man, which still remains one of my favorite movies ever. Check this out from his review on The Minus Man: “Since Vann is the narrator of the film, the movie is seen through his eyes. A film told through the eyes of an enigmatic lead makes for a for a very ambiguous story. Many questions are left unanswered once the credits roll down and I don’t think a second viewing of the film would answer them.” Very considerate, no? Well, just so you see he’s not all Mr. Fancy Arthouse, here’s a snippet from his review of the Friday the 13th remake that came out a few years ago: “The visual effects were on the money as well. Jason’s look if not a tad too familiar was the bomb design wise while the red grub came through as to its execution when displayed on screen.”

Jesus Wept: Are Horror Fans Desensitized To Misogyny, Violence, and Irreligion?

By now in this paper I feel I must address a rather controversial issue with Arrow’s site. The layout is a bit chaotic, perhaps reflecting the messy feel of a lot of horror movies. But he also has a recurring shtick called “Mistress of the Week” where he puts up a racy photo of some horror movie actress. These aren’t any more raunchy than what you’d find in Maxim. Some of his articles are also littered with like-minded photos. But just the fact that such cheesecake photography has became a tame standard is consideration for reflection. Horror is rife with untamed and often forbidden sexuality, and Arrow revels in it in spades.

Even as an ardent fan, I’ll readily concede that the horror genre isn’t noted as the most conscientious or socially aware genre out there. Too often it plays upon trite racial stereotypes and falls back on sex as a convenient plot device. But Arrow isn’t about to fall into the politically correct trap, staying true to horror’s maverick attitude and standing firm in his editorial decisions: “That’s fine, it’s your opinion, you are entitled to it, you don’t like it, get off the site”, when I ask him how he’d respond to potential accusations of sexism on his site.

A weird sort of conservative morality has emerged: often, the girl who abstains from sex survives until the end, the vestal virgin. The horror genre seems as schizophrenic as its own creatures: it’s not sure if it wants to see a girl flaunt her body or hide it. In the essay “Monster Pains: Masochism, Menstruation, and Identification in the Horror Film”, Aviva Briefel observes that the creation of a female monster in a horror movie is wrought with pain: “The female counterpart to the act of self-mutilation is menstruation, a narrative event that positions the audience in an uncomfortably close relationship to the female monster” (Briefel 16), whereas “Before they set off to harm others, male monsters revel in masochistic acts” (16). Arrow does bring up a good point that the women in the horror genre aren’t totally defenseless or ignorant: “I don’t know ask the girls who posed for the pictures if it’s sexist or not” regarding his Mistresses.

An issue that often arises in any discussion about horror films is the effect it has on the viewer. Am I desensitized to violence after having watched so many of them? When I went to see Scream 4 with my girlfriend recently, I watched people get stabbed in the head and threatened on the telephone. When we walked out the theater, the two of us continued discussing the ho-hum aspects of our day, not giving a second thought to all the imaginary death we just witnessed. The Omen featured explicitly Satanic subject matter and while the genre is too often stereotyped as exclusively reveling in devil worship, it is a theme that pops up sometimes. I think the bassist for the death metal band Cannibal Corpse Alex Webster said it best: “I think people probably aren’t that desensitized to it, you know including myself, like you know, we sing about all this stuff and you watch a movie where you know it’s not real and it’s no big deal, but if you really saw someone get their brains bashed in right in front of you, I think it would have a pretty dramatic impact on any human being, you know what I mean?” Speaking from personal experience, being at the funeral of a loved one (or someone I know) is a humbling experience. When I saw my dad placed in his coffin, the finality of it, no amount of slasher movies prepares you for being face-to-face with that, and no matter how tough you think you are because you listen to heavy metal, nothing prepares you for the raw emotion of that moment.

In a sense, I guess I also enjoy the camp aspect of some horror movies. There’s nothing I love more than a cheesy horror movie where I can laugh at the stilted action and atrocious special effects. I remember one night we rented this movie called Santa’s Slay (I know, I know) and stayed up until three in the morning laughing at the overall cheesy format. There’s enough real-life terrors out there, and horror movies can soothe our anxieties. The baddies on screen are nothing more than amplified versions of our anxieties. In a sense, it could be a gruesome catharsis for all the fears and uncertainty we experience in day-to-day life.

And also, horror movies have shown an ability to rise above the mere level of ludicrous vaudeville into something weightier and more considerate. There’s one in particular out there called The Last Horror Movie, which is a clever mockumentary that deconstructs the very notions of the horror genre through the purported diary of an actual serial killer. Arrow has to this to say about the film: “The script (by James Handel) was incredibly well written where it often slyly played with our perception of its lead and our expectations to viciously bang us across the head. Furthermore, the subject matter at hand was thankfully not handled in an obvious black and white manner.” The fact that horror can rise to the level in which it attains salience and comments upon itself shows that there is some intelligence in this monster after all. How many romances or action movies have plots that mock their very rubric?

The Only Sure Things In Life Are Death and Taxes: How Does Arrow Make Money?

Seeing as he is a professional writer, and this is a paper ultimately dealing with that sphere, analysis of film criticism and the horror genre is all fine and dandy, but just how does he make a living from his efforts? There’s certainly no lack of effort on Fallon’s part; he of course has this site (where he is officially the executive editor and main reviewer), as well as a short film “The Red Hours” out (one guess what style it is), and not to mention his own personal blog. His site sells movie posters and he has official AITH merchandise (including T-shirts) available for sale at CafePress.com, which usually run around twenty dollars or so. Why, he even has an official teddy bear and BBQ apron! He seems grateful for what he’s accomplished: “If I go by how the industry reacts to me, I am a recognizable name within it.” For any critic to be welcomed into an artistic sphere is a triumph in itself, given the usual distance afforded to them due to their aloof reputations. And there’s personal perks as well for his social life: “I’ve travelled the world, partied with stars, went to Playboy parties, had groupies… the works.” Personally, I think he’s got me sold on being a professional writer of any sort!

The John Fallon Official Blog is a bit tamer and more personal than Arrow In the Head. One post brags about an upcoming role in the French movie Dead Shadows but the old Arrow still comes through: “my role is very Vin Diesel-ish (its {sic} good that I have been training like an animal now of late)”. More than anything, I think the fact that he doubles as both a reviewer and actor adds to his credibility. He knows the industry inside and out, unlike many other critics. Also, this allows him close contact with many big names in the field. He’s able to nab interview with actors in the horror genre seemingly at the drop of a dime; it’s not hard to imagine the effort amounts to little more than bringing up the idea over drinks at a local watering hole. The byline on AITH’s site boasts a quote from James Wan (who directed the first Saw movie) singing Fallon’s praises.

He’s pretty savvy to the hip new social networking trend, too. He has over 5,000 likes on Facebook, he’s of course on Twitter, and his YouTube channel is appropriately “fallon666”. Why, he’s even on IMDB (Internet Movie Database), which states he hails from the frosty environs of Canda and stands at an impressive 6 feet. He “always knew that he wanted to be in the arts from an early age, with his grand collection of movies, his unique artistic renderings, his many writings and his lauded performances in theatre school productions” and also spent “another three years perfecting his craft as an actor through John Abbott College’s professional theater program (from which he graduated with honors)”.

On his site there’s a horror discussion board. One thread includes a link to a review of “Jennifer’s Body”, which came out in 2008 and starred Megan Fox. Here’s a snippet of what went down on the chat: “It doesn’t help that Megan Fox, while obviously attractive, is rather flat as an actress. Her performance as Jennifer pretty much just alternates between ‘ditzy’ and ‘bitchy’”. As one can see, they’re definitely not afraid to get provocative. One participant responds about the use of the wrong Hole song during the end credits, to which the original poster retorts: “The movie gets a couple bonus points for having Silversun Pickups and Florence and the Machine songs though”. All of this sounds very casual and conversational, which sets the tone for not just the discussion board, but Arrow’s site as well.

Elsewhere on his site, he has the cleverly named “DVD Buzz Saw” under the “DVD News” tab, which informs viewers of the site when certain horror movies are set to hit the market on DVD. He also dabbles in all things scary and odd. The “Kool Shite” section of his site also has reviewers of even horror video games! To satisfy any gorehound’s literary side, he also has book reviews, including one of “What’s a Nice Actor Like You Doing In A Movie Like This?”, though this is penned by a different author. But he’s still made it into the publishing world; in the book Jamie Lee Curtis: Scream Queen, reviewer Jake Dee notes John Fallon offers his observations on the legendary horror movie actress.

To encourage interactivity and fan loyalty to his site, he’s also recently sponsoring a give-away contest. This one involves the movie True Legend (directed by Yuen Woo Ping) and to win a prize (which could be a pair of gloves autographed by mixed martial arts competitor Royce Gracie, an autographed photo from the director, or a poster autographed by Cung Le, who acts in the film) fans must e-mail Arrow the correct answer to the question “Who did Royce Gracie fight when he came back to the ring on May 27, 2006 and who won the fight?” To me, this signifies Arrow breaks out of the underground somewhat and is more akin to a morning radio DJ with such involvement with his audience. This signifies he has legitimate contacts within many entertainment fields. Also, by reaching out across demographics, Arrow is able to corner the market on aggressive masculinity and establish a bond with those who may be into the UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship) as well.

Overall, though he may not be quite that famous now, I believe Arrow In the Head is a force to be reckoned with. He makes a place for horror movies within the public intellectual realm and can give understanding to either an absurd slasher or a moody thriller, taking both on their own merits. For over a decade he’s slowly established a brand name and has made waves with not just readers, but within the horror community itself. Now that’s something to die for.

Film Reviews From the Basement tap Deaden aka the little movie that could…

Deaden_johnfallon

Director Christian Viel and I had a gut feeling that our little vigilante flick DEADEN (2006) would probably become some kind of micro cult classic; and being that we are in 2011 and we still hear about it by way of peeps e-mailing us to say they dug it and new reviews randomly popping out; I guess we were right. Fellow Canucks at Film Reviews From the Basement recently covered the flick via mini reviews and their Podcast. Here’s a preview below; check their review HERE ( http://filmreviewsfromthebasement.blogspot.com/2011/04/jason-and-shawn-review-lemmy-and-deaden.html ) and Podcast HERE ( http://filmreviewsfromthebasement.blogspot.com/2011/04/season-finale-lemmy-and-deaden.html ).

Jason: Filmmakers who piss and moan about not being able to make a good movie on a low budget need to shut the fuck up and watch Deaden. This is a low, low budget action flick that delivers. It’s got nudity, graphic violence, awesome kills and, for the most part, decent acting. Lead man and screenwriter John Fallon might not have the hard look of the old-school action star, but he’s got the physical presence and acting chops to do the job. And his script doesn’t let him down. A Good from this Basement Dweller.

Shawn: This movie was fantastic! Sure the budget was smaller and some of the actors weren’t awesome, but that didn’t detract from it being entertaining, violent and full of action. Pull any punches? Fuck no! I can’t believe how far this movie actually went. Good for you Fallon. Fuck Hollywood’s pretentious asses. Too bad the industry hasn’t grown a set of ball and given you what you need to do this kind of thing more often. A Good from me!

PERSONAL NOTE: Man I gotta get my next action project TRIGGER off the ground…

Wanna get in the film biz? Read this!

Fallonblogfilm

Over the years I’ve gotten a bazillion e-mails from Indie filmmakers/screenwriters who were starting out asking me for advice (Why? Beats me!). With that, here are some of the things I’ve spat their way. May be useful to some of you budding directors, screenwriters etc out there.

-Don’t trust anybody.

-If people can steal your ideas, they will.

-The film industry is the only industry that I know of where people will expect you to work for free or chump change.

-Always have a written agreement with people you work with BEFORE you do the actual work (and get an entertainment lawyer to look over that agreement before you sign, they are usually filled with traps, there to fuck ya out of $$$). And don’t go by people’s “word”, it aint worth shit in this biz.

- Never accept back-end deals of any kind as you’ll rarely see a dime since the other party has the books and can/will cook them and f*ck you out of dough. Get as much money upfront as you can cause its probably the only $$$ you'll see.

-Don’t register your script with the WGA, its almost useless in a court of law (kind of a little known sham); instead register it with the US Copyright offices to protect your work.

-If you have a finished film and wanna sell it to a distribution company; BYPASS sales agents i.e. bloodsucking, crooks who will empty your pockets with “imaginary administration fees”. Cut the leech middle man out and get to the distributors yourself, via any of the big film markets (AFM, Cannes Market, Berlin etc.) or by sending screeners out to the head of acquisitions of the varied distribution companies.

-If you’re in it for fame and fortune, forget it, do something else, there are easier ways to make money and to be “famous”.

-Try to surround yourself with people you know and trust – they are rare and even then, don’t trust them either.

Good luck!

JF

Any tips for how to get into the FX side of the industry?

The Arrow

Good call brandon draven1! Always try to pay peeps something, even if its like 20$ a day AND have them sign a contract on top of that, that way they are legally libel. That usually results in cast/crew showing up on set and doing the work; even after the initial enthusiasm of "working on a film" has run out and the long ridiculous hours have started to take a toll.

Oksana's Ex-Bodyguard Sides With Mel Gibson

Film

Kristian Herzog -- who served as Oksana's bodyguard until recently -- tells TMZ, Oksana admitted to him Mel never punched her, as she claimed to authorities. Rather, Herzog says Oksana told him Mel slapped her, and that's it. As TMZ first reported, Mel admitted slapping Oksana because he says she was shaking baby Lucia wildly.

Herzog -- who has been subpoenaed by Mel's lawyers in the custody war -- tells us Oksana admitted to him that she secretly taped Mel Gibson "to pressure Mel to pay her money." Oksana is currently being investigated by the L.A. County Sheriff's Department for alleged extortion.

Herzog -- who was privy to virtually every conversation Oksana had with her lawyers -- claims he had a sexual relationship with Oksana -- she denies it. Source: TMZ

End of the year thoughts; fuck 2010; here’s to 2011! It can’t be worse…

Johnnyhockey2

Usually at the end of a year; I always do a list of the top positive and negative events that went down in my life that year. But to be honest; the less said about 2010; the better; I want to forget the year; I don’t want a record of it, I just want to erase it from my memory and move on. The burdens that 2009 left me with, grew, grew and grew in 2010 and that’s what the bulk of my year was all about; dealing with them, running away from them, breaking apart… trying to keep it together…nough said. On the up side; although I once again traveled the globe (Texas, LA, Spain etc.) and was privy to many groovy life experiences (like being a member of the Jury at Fantastic Fest in Austin, spending time with friends in Barcelona, kicking it with the Red Man in LA); looking back; its hockey that helped me hold on to that last bastion of positive energy within me. I got so passionate about the sport over the years; attending Habs games; embracing the scene in Montreal; that I finally started playing it.

When I was a kid I was never put into hockey as all good Canuck children should. Sure I played it in the streets and all but never on ice. I have now been playing ice hockey for 7 months and I f*cking love it. Not only does it give me a continuous challenge (my teammates are way more experienced that I am, I have to catch up); one that is different than the types I usually undertake but its also become a new hobby (cinema stopped being a 100% hobby the moment it became work). Its also easily one of the most physical sports that I ever tackled (right up there with boxing). I look forward to every session…I truly can’t get enough. Moreover; it helped me in my quest to stay healthy.

When I left for Spain this year for example, I started smoking again and fell back into bad habits. The moment I got back home and hit the ice though…I PAID for it big time and figured that there is no way I can play this sport if I am NOT healthy. So I quit smoking yet again (over 2 months now) and stepped back on the right path. So what about my goals for 2011? I will keep it simple. I want to do what I have to do to heal, cause its not happening by itself and I also want to keep striving for my goals; but from different angles. That’s it! All I have to say. Am done. So here we go again; another round in the ring of life. Wishing yall a TKO victory in 2011!

Congrats on being 2 months smoke free :) Good luck to whatever method you're using, I hope it sticks. Being healthy is always a battle, I'm all about small victories.

I suspected that you started again after a status update you posted. Although you didn't mention smoking at all my first thought after reading it was "He's smoking again!" lol It's just something I've always had where I can sense when someone has made significant change in his/her lives without seeing or receiving any hints. I knew my cousins were pregnant before they even told anyone or even showed signs.

I wanted to see a couple of movies on your list like Mother's Day, I Saw The Devil, Kidnapped, The Loved Ones, Insidious, Buried but they never released them in my state and I still need to watch Valhalla Rising which is in my netflix list. These are my top ten genre films that I actually got to see in 2010.

1. REC. 2
2. Tie between Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows: Part 1 and Paranormal Activity 2-> (Underrated! It gave me the spooks)
3. Tie between The Crazies and Edge Of Darkness(because you said thrillers right)
4. Tie between Centurion and Burning Bright
5. Daybreakers
6. The Final
7. Case 39 (underrated! It wasn't amazing but it wasn't that bad either)
8. The Ceremony (I don't think it was made in 2010 but it was finally available on netflix)
9. The Human Centipede
10. Black Swan

Not too shabby year for genre flicks but it still can be way better. Lets all hope for a better year in 2011.

Terminal_83
Terminal_83 at 09:21 AM Jan 03

1. Red, White & Blue
2. Black Swan
3. Inception
4. Frozen
5. The Loved Ones
6. The Final
7. Splice
8. Devil
9. Survival of the Dead
10. Never Sleep Again: The Elm Street Legacy

grelber37

I watched fifty-two 2010 releases. Of those, thirty-four were genre flicks. Of those, seventeen were favorites. Of those, these ten are top-ten favorites: Bitch Slap; The Expendables; Black Swan; Faster; Iron Man 2; The Final; Red, White, & Blue; Inception; Hatchet 2; and The Killer Inside Me.

This list skips animated fare. I am glad to see The Final and Burning Bright making Schmoes' lists. Each deserves mention.

Red Hours reviewed by Cinema Crazed.com

Red-hours-pic

SOURCE: http://www.cinema-crazed.com/r-z/red-hours.htm

GOOD: Invoking much of the grindhouse elements, director John Fallon's experimental short thriller is something of a royal mind fuck, one that excels in being about surreal as it possibly can while squeezing in nods to some classic films during the duration of its story. Director Fallon goes against the conventions of formula storytelling with "The Red Hours" a movie constantly blurring the realms of fantasy and reality when a club goer on a night out takes some hallucinogens to spite an ex he sees across the club canoodling with a girlfriend of hers.

With a mixture of anger and bonafide chemicals, the young man has a full on orgy of violent and extreme visions involving gun fights, blood soaked corpses, dangerous gun wielding females, axe wielding lesbians, and the like, all of which is never quite what it seems until the very end. Fallon's film while not perfect is quite visually stunning and for the most part contains a wicked visual appeal toward it that garners some memorable scenes including some fast paced chase sequences, and stunning sweeping pans on our sexy actresses, all of whom are empowered more by Fallon's fetishistic visual flourishes and camera angles than their uniforms and hand held weapons.

Mostly an experimental film, "The Red Hours" is a drug trip of the highest proportion and one most dangerous in the mind of a jilted ex refusing to cope with his ex-girlfriend's new sexual preference and the inevitable aftermath of a drug binge. Fallon is a sharp eyed independent director, and I appreciated the technical aspect behind "The Red Hours" in the end.

BAD: In spite of John Fallon's sharp eye, the performances by both of the actresses leave very much to be desired with often stilted line delivery, and wooden performances that distract from the film immensely and never match the swagger and style Fallon strives for from minute one.

SUMMING UP: While not perfect with stiff performances from the female cast, "The Red Hours" is an admirable experimental short with a great visual flair, an interesting premise, and a sweet sense of style.

Watch my short film THE RED HOURS online!

Redhourspicbottom2

Hey all; I decided to release my short film THE RED HOURS online. Its been a long road with this no budget, mucho work opus and I loved every second of it. We had lots of obstacles to surmount during production for eight minutes of screen time (corrupted footage…ouch…, actors bailing at the last second, I sprained my ankle on set i.e. popped painkillers and kept hustling); the usual stuff that comes with a guerrilla shoot. The film then went on to do the Festival circuit. The rough cut got booed by the Spanish Press in Sitges (another ouch…whistles in Spain mean boos BTW), was fairly enjoyed by the Sitges audiences at the second screening, it then won an award at the Ozzie Fest A Night of Horror and finally went to screen at Fantasia, at Cinefantasy International Film Festival in Brazil and at the Filmets Fest in Spain.

I of course did not do this alone…like AT ALL. None of it would have happened without my wonderful cast who gave me their all (Deke Richards, Amy Wickenheiser and Heather Westwood…. yeah you); my striving co producer and DOP Donny Broussard and the fine folks of Louisiana who put up with my shit (you know who you are) for beer, pizza and handjobs. Last but certainly not least big gracias to my editors Michael Nouryeh and Christian Viel; who put in big time and supported me in getting my drivel out and to sound mixer Benoit Babin for elevating what I had to a higher plane.

The reaction to THE RED HOURS has been mixed so far, some love it, some hate it; all good. One reaction that stood out for me though was that many had NO IDEA what it was about. Which is fine, cause its supposed to be an artsy, symbolism heavy short mixed in with horror conventions. I guess I thought it was more obvious than it is. So that’s it. Tap the short off my Official Blog HERE http://john-fallon.com/?p=1176. I may sell 100 LIMITED EDITION DVD copies of the film around Christmas if I feel there is a demand for it. Time will tell… we’ll see. Peace!

Deep Thoughts by John Fallon #11

Tn_mooning2

Hey all! Decided to try something on MFC 4 fun. A little thing I am calling Deep Thoughts by John Fallon. What its about? Basically me sharing my "philosophy of life", my way of thinking for better and for worse with yall. Sometimes it will be serious, sometimes funny...it will be what it will be, don't want to over think it. So here's the 10th one.

-To the people who wallow in self pity instead of rising up and fighting for what they want; fuck off.

-To the people who leech on others instead of working hard to get what they deserve; fuck you!

-To the people who are miserable with themselves and project that misery onto their friends; shame on you.
