I have already reviewed a couple of David Cronenberg's movies and now its time to do another one. One that I personally think is the best movie that Cronenberg has done. The Fly.
First things first, The Fly is a remake but like many of the remakes done in the 80's like The Thing or The Blob, The Fly is indeed much better then the original.
If you don't know what its about here it is in a nutshell. Jeff Goldblum Seth Bundle is a brilliant scientist who has made a teleportion machine where he steps in one pod and then teleport's to the other one. After believing the process is now safe for human testing he decides to use himself as the guinea pig (naturally), but when doing so he misses a fly flying into the pod with him at the last second and when he appears in the second pod he and the flies DNA have been spliced together and soon Bundle starts to slowly turn into a giant monstrous fly.
The fact that the horror in this movie comes from science that may, who knows, may one day be a reality makes this whole thing extra scary. You don't screw around with science and this is yet another reason why! You screw around with science and you turn into a giant goddamn fly!
The special effects are also amazing. The Fly monster looks absolutely fantastic and has to be one of the greatest looking movie monsters of all time. Its creepy, ugly and scary as hell. The effects of Bundlefly crawling on the wall was also amazing in the time before CGI this movie makes you believe that a man can crawl around on a wall. To do this a rotating room was made and I don't care what anyone says about CGI Bundleflies crawling on the wall looks much better then any time Peter Parker crawled on a wall or building in fact is they used the same special effects in this movie again in the Spider-Man movies they would look even better then they already did.
As for the acting Jeff Goldblum does his usual Jeff Goldblum seemingly nervous but completely brilliant guy shtick but it is at its absolute best in this movie as Seth Bundle who's decent into madness as he slowly transforms into a monster is excellent and is probably the best transformation from good to evil that I have ever been done. Geena Davis is also great as Veronica Quaife who is Bundles love interest in the movie and can be easily identified with and you truly want to see her be safe and get away at the end of this movie.
As I said before The Fly is my favorite movie done by David Cronenberg which is a pretty big statement in itself given his amazing body of work. I give The Fly a 10 out of 10.
