The Innkeepers

Innkeepers-poster

Directed by: Ti West
Written by: Ti West
Cast: Sara Paxton, Pat Healy, Kelly McGillis
Studio:
Genre: Horror, Thriller
Official Site:
Plot: 2 hotel employees try to stir up some paranormal activity during their final weekend in business.

Review:

The first movie I seen in 2012 and if this is any preview of what this year will be for film, then we're off to a great start. The movie progresses slow as far as the paranormal stuff goes, but it works for it. The setting is very atmospheric with it's quiet, eerie tone and the 2 main characters have a great chemistry with each other, so much so that even with few actual scary moments, it still manages to build tension quite well. Once the paranormal juices start really flowing, it hits hard, with some really intense scenes and one particular graphic moment that shocked the hell out of me even though I seen it coming, I loved every minute of this flick, with the exception of it's bitter ending. It leaves kind of a bad taste in your mouth and some questions unanswered but was not enough to ruin the film for me but did kill it from getting a perfect rating. For me, The Innkeepers is the Insidious of 2012. See it.

Seems I'm the only one who really loved it too lol. But I have a soft spot for the paranormal and movies with atmosphere and it has both so it was a win in my book.

Stake Land

Stake-land-poster

Directed by: Jim Mickle
Written by: Jim Mickle, Nick Damici
Cast: Danielle Harris, Kelly McGillis, Connor Paolo, Michael Cerveris, Bonnie Dennison
Studio: IFC Films
Genre: Horror
Official Site: www.stakelandmovie.com
Plot: A post-apocalyptic road movie. With vampires.

Review:

A nice little surprise this was. Even though this movie reminded me of so many others (Zombieland, The Road, to name a couple) it was actually a refreshing take on the Vampire genre and quite enjoyable for a STV flick. The gore was tight, the pacing was on point, the atmosphere was soul sucking but hauntingly beauitiful, and the cast, even though mostly unknowns, were terrific. Nick Damici has the Mickey Rourke vibe to him that I dug, he played the role of Mister perfectly. The only thing I would've liked to have seen different was the ending, it just ended a little abruptly and was open to interpretation which can sometimes be a nice way to end a flick but I would've preferred a little explanation as to the whereabouts of a certain character. I really dug the vamps in this one though, they were more animalistic savages who relied mostly on instinct rather than intellect which you don't get very often with vampire movies. Bottom line is this movie is graphic, creepy, and most of the time depressing. Check it out if you're a fan of the genre.

Written by: Cory Goodman
Cast: Paul Bettany, Cam Gigandet, Christopher Plummer, Maggie Q, Lily Collins, Stephen Moyer
Studio: Screen Gems
Genre: Horror, Thriller, Western

Plot: A trained vampire assassin from a group known as "Priests" goes rogue to rescue a girl who had been kidnapped by vampires.

Review:

This movie was pure good times and I'd like to take this opportunity to address the haters: If you can't have a good time while watching a movie but still consider yourself a "movie fan/buff" or if you completely berate and shit on a movie before giving it a chance then go fuck yourself with the stick that is shoved so tightly up your ass. I dug the hell out of it, it's not gonna win any awards or change your life but the one thing it is is entertaining which is what movies are supposed to be. :p

Jumper

Directed by: Doug Liman
Written by: Simon Kinberg
Cast: Hayden Christensen, Samuel L. Jackson, Jamie Bell, Teresa Palmer
Studio: Fox
Genre: Science-Fiction
Official Site: www.jumperthemovie.com
Plot: Wow, I guess white men CAN jump!

Review:

This is one seriously underrated flick.

Man if I could teleport, I'd be all like BAMPH! all up in the White House and poop on the floor in the oval office then BAMPH! I'd teleport into Ashton Kutchers house and poop on his pillow and BAMPH! onto Taco Bell to get more ammo then BAMPH! to Vegas and poop in Carrot Top's prop trunk right before he goes on stage.

They should make a sequel to this called Pooper starring me. But just like many other sequels it would prolly be shitty.

Studio:
Genre: Horror
Official Site:
Plot: 3 bank robbing brothers on the run end up in their mother's old house while the new owners are throwing a party. Mama comes home, violence ensues.

Review:

Although as far from the original as it could possibly be, this "remake" was still a bloody fun ride. Whereas the movie's violence and brutality drive the film, it's the performances by the entire cast that make it solid and hold it together. Rebecca DeMornay is the bread and butter of the film and steals the show with her performance as the cool, calm and collected leader of her 3 psycho bank robbing sons, but there are many members of the supporting cast that at times steal the spotlight from her...[more]...

Vanishing on 7th Street

Directed by: Brad Anderson
Written by: Anthony Jaswinski
Cast: Hayden Christensen, Thandie Newton, John Leguizamo
Studio: Magnet Releasing
Genre: Horror, Mystery, Thriller
Official Site: www.vanishingon7th.com
Plot: A blackout sweeps a town and everybody except a few people disappear. The survivors must now find a way to stay out of the darkness or the shadows might take them too.

Review:

Think Night of the Comet meets They. Not as good as NotC and not as bad as They, right in the middle. Actually, it's tough to say this was a good movie, because it really wasn't. Nothing was explained, and sometimes that's ok. A little mystery is always fun and I like alot of movies that are open to interpretation. But this one just really didn't want to give any information to the viewer. It held back everything and was one of the most unclear movies I've ever seen.

I'm still not sure what the hell was going on, and the ending was one of the most unsatisfying I had ever seen. It had the potential to be good with unkown things lurking in the dark and unexplained vanishing of the mass population, but they never really touch the subject of what was happening, they were just dealing with it. They left it to speculation with no hints one way or another, it was very vague.

There were a few aspects of the movie that I liked though. It had some decent acting and some pretty eerie scenes, so for that I guess I can say the movie was ok. At best. But really it was just a mess that went nowhere and left me completely unsatisfied. The end was ridiculous and killed any chance the filmmakers had to redeem themselves. See it, don't see it. Whatever.

Sylar Victim #420
Sylar Victim #420 at 12:08 PM Feb 23

I think the only reason it comes off that way is because Bill so blatantly questions peoples blind faith without regard and religious fanatics get so upset at the fact that it's even being questioned that they over react and make it seem like Bill is being more of a dick than he is actually being.

Like how that one dude in the trailer church just instantly got upset and stormed out as soon as he found out it wasn't a documentary that was praising Jesus. He didn't even try to speak his mind and express his beliefs, he stormed out because he knew he didn't have any answers for any possible topics that may come up. It's just like how stupid people are always angry. Ever seen a smart bully? The answer is no. When people get confused, they get angry. And that's why religious fanatics are so violent. "I don't know why, just fucking burn sinner!"

I really don't know what to say about this movie. I mean, the first half left me feeling sick. I was horrified, and not in a good way. Rape is never easy to watch in a movie, but this movie makes it so I never want to see it on any scale ever again. I caught this badboy at FANTASIA , in MONTREAL , this year . I've never really seen audience reaction like this before , ever !! From outraged indignation to shouts of Misogynist crap, the shite was hitting the fan, BIG TIME !! I'll say this, the original film was even more senselessly brutal in it's violent assault of the young author. I told pretty much everyone who'd listen how frigging worthless I felt the film was , and I really had no desire to see this crap again anytime soon, if ever !! I was kind of coaxed into this film at the festival, and while I still feel it's vile, shocking, exploitation crap, it was far better than the source material , for whatever that's worth . WELL DONE REVIEW , MY MAN !!

Thanks timmy! I've never seen the original, or if I did it was a long time ago, so I have no basis for comparison. I think I would've really loved this movie more had the rape scenes not lasted so long, it just made me sick after awhile. Plus I didn't like how she just disappeared and then just showed up later for revenge. I think the movie would've been more solid had they showed her survival.

Let The Right One In has more of a quiet, haunting feel to it, as Let Me In never really leaves enough room to create that sort of uncomfort. Also, The boy inn LTROI feels like more of a homicidal time bomb as the American one feels too much like a scared little boy.

Sylar Victim #420
Sylar Victim #420 at 02:44 PM Jan 18

True, however, LTROI's quite tone made the movie a little more dull than the remake. I'll have to give it a watch again to make more of a comparison but I know that LTROI didn't grab me like this one did. This was the first time I prefered an American remake to an original so I can't deny how perfect this movie was. And I agree with Owen being more of a scared little boy as opposed to Oskar's ticking time bomb personality, but I think it made his vulnerability and connection to Abby more believable and made me care about him more.

Psycho-Pirate-99
Psycho-Pirate-99 at 02:50 PM Jan 18

Good points. I definitely will give you that the pace is more enjoyable in Let Me In, LTROI does feel like it drags at points where Let Me In is a lot more steady. And I LOVED Moretz as Abby.

Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole

Directed by: Zack Snyder

Cast: Emilie de Ravin, Ryan Kwanten, Hugo Weaving, Geoffrey Rush, Helen Mirren, Rachael Taylor, Sam Neill, Jim Sturgess, Abbie Cornish
Studio: Warner Bros.
Genre: Animation, Fantasy
Official Site: www.legendoftheguardians.com
Plot: An owl that gets abducted by a legion of villainous owls escapes and enlists the help of the legendary Guardians to stop their evil wraith.

Review:

I didn't get to see this one in 3D which I realize is a travesty as this movie was visually stunning and was probably amazing in 3D. This movie surprised me as I never realized watching owls for an hour and a half could be so enjoyable, other than watching Nite Owl do his mating dance on his front lawn on the first full moon of every autumn. If Nite Owl has taught us anything, it's that Owls kick ass, and this movie just brings that message to the big screen.

Snyder is an amazing fimmaker (Ha! I just realized the connection between Nite Owl, this movie, and Zack Snyder!) and this movie is a nice addition to his resume. It's an epic masterpiece that has a solid story, enjoyable characters, some fantastic voive over work, and visuals that completely astounded me. The character of Digger was the comedic highlight of the movie and Metalbeak made for one badass villain. This is a classic tale of good triumphing over evil, the underdog going the distance, and the bold step that is stepping out of someone's shadow and it's a must see!

Genre: Horror, Thriller

Plot: 2 American girls get seperated from each other in Argentina, one gets abducted and the other is on a mission.... for justice. I mean, on a mission to find her friend. Damn movie trailer voice over man, get out of my head!

Review:

Nothing new or original here. Just another movie where some Americans are kidnapped in a foreign country. That's just the American filmmakers way of keeping us right here where we can spend our hard earned dollars right in our own country. And it works too. ZOMG, I'm never leaving the country! I love America! "My country 'tis of thee, da da da liberty.....it's really great."

Amber Heard and Odette Yustman make this movie watchable. Especially Heard, I've enjoyed pretty much every role I've seen her in. She has great screen presence. Kinda like a hot, better acting Kristen Stewart. Come to think of it, the complete opposite of Kristen Stewart.

The plot of this one is overdone and the events that play out are lame at moments but if there's nothing else on........

Studio: Lionsgate
Genre: Horror
Official Site: www.saw3dmovie.com
Plot: People play Jigsaw's live or die game. Part 7.

Review:

Firstly I'll say that I "saw" this in 2D and it was still titled "Saw 3D". I thought that maybe they would've changed it to like "Saw: The Final Chapter" or sumpin. I digress.

Saw 3D was definitely a welcome addition to the franchise. Of course the main reason to watch the Saw movies are for the traps and kill scenes, and this one didn't disappoint in that department. The story wrapped things up (and yet left them open of course) in a nice, although predictable from the very beginning way.

The biggest surprise for me was seeing actor Chad Donella (playing lead detective Gibson) who apperantly has been on Smallville for the last 9 years but I haven't seen since the first Final Destination and one of my favorite X-Files Episodes "Hungry".

All in all, the Saw franchise supplies some fun movies every year but I know for alot of people it wore out it's welcome around the 3rd year. For me, if they kept the series going I would keep watching because so far the only one I didn't really like was Saw 5. However, if they ended the franchise with this one I'd say they definitley went out on the highest note possible for a series some would say has ran it's course.

The End

Plot: A runaway train can't be stopped! Oh wait, here comes Denzel to save the day!

Review:

Even though the film's title was one of the most misleading movie titles ever, this movie was pretty damn good. It's pretty much the same thing you can expect from any other movie similar to this one. Crazy shit happens, Denzel gets involved, people in the control room are freaking out while looking at giant screens that keep them up to speed on the going-ons, there's some conference calls involved, the main guy in charge wants to run shit even though his ideas suck, the main characters are dealing with problems in their personal life while dealing with the crisis, the guy nobody expects saves the day and gets the girl and/or solves his personal problems in the process. All in a days work.

Plot: A man child plays on his mother's strong emotional attachments toward him to interfere with her blossoming romance with John C. Reilly.

Review:

Even though the trailer didn't exactly lead me to believe that this movie was side splitting hilarious, it did make me think that I would actually laugh considering the 2 stars of the film are usually funny as hell. Not this time. This was just a strange movie, more of a drama as far as I was concerned. I hardly laughed at all. The movie was just awkward to watch. Decent performances by both Reilly and Hill but the movie just didn't really do it for me. I prefer my comedies to be funny. I just felt the movie fell flat on it's face. it didn't even have the feel of a movie but more of a MTV docudrama where a film crew invades the lives of these people and they pretend the camera isn't there. It just didn't feel genuine no matter how good the cast was.

Review:

I was really expecting this movie to be hilarious, it seemed that the formula was near perfect. The premise, the cast, the director. All perfectly capable assests to the film, but the funny just wasn't all there. I laughed at many moments but it was usually just awkward laughs, like "this is funny but in a way where I'm not so sure if it's really funny". I'm being shown funny things and hearing some decent jokes but I felt the laughs were forced for some reason. Like I was only chuckling because I thought I should be, not because it was a natural reaction to something that is genuinely funny. Does any of that make sense? Well if you're feeling confused about my review then you know how I felt while watching this movie.

All in all, there were enough moments in the movie that were good enough for me to say it was worth a watch but I wouldn't go out of your way to see it. But if you're bored and can see it for free then, why the hell not? Just don't expect the normal level of funny you've come to know from Rudd and Carell.

pretty much my exact thoughts. i thought carrell was too michael scott-ish (haha, scottish) in this movie though. i feel like these guys (rudd and carrell) are better with R rated comedies than PG-13 ones.

Easy A

Easya-poster-1

Directed by: Will Gluck
Written by: Bert V. Royal
Cast: Emma Stone, Penn Badgely, Thomas Haden Church, Amanda Bynes, Stanley Tucci, Patricia Clarkson, Cam Gigandet, Lisa Kudrow
Studio: Screen Gems
Genre: Comedy
Official Site: www.letsnotandsaywedid.com
Plot: Emma Stone wants to be noticed in school so she whores out her reputation for some attention. Dumbass, don't she know she could just hang 'round here?

Review:

Short and sweet:

I was shocked at how genuinely funny this was. And not in the chick flick romantic comedy or Juno kind of way. It was actually really hilarious with a superb cast. Emma Stone of course is the highlight with her dry wit and snappy comebacks but I really liked Stanly Tucci and Amanda Bynes in this. They definitely stole their scenes. Definitely worth a watch for some good laughs.

Everybody kicked ass in this movie. I dug the hell out of Lisa Kudrow in it.

Skyline

Skyline-poster1

Directed by: The Brothers Strause
Written by: Joshua Cordes, Liam O'Donnell
Cast: Brittany Daniel, Eric Balfour, Crystal Reed, Scottie Thompson, Donald Faison, David Zayas, Neil Hopkins, Kevin O'Donnell
Studio: Universal Pictures
Genre: Action, Horror, Thriller
Official Site: www.iamrogue.com/skyline
Plot: Some alien ships come to Earth for a mass abduction, and some survivors try to escape an apartment building.

Review:

It was really no surprise to me that I'd like this one. This was an effects movie and nothing more and it delivered in that department in a big way. Almost every scene looked amazing and they didn't go the shaky camera route that I see in alot of movies lately. It looked great and the filmmakers wanted you to see that. Possibly to avert your attention away from it's flaws.

It really has like no plot, aliens show up and do a mass abduction, people try to escape an apartment building and find a safe place. That's about it. It's characters were mostly annoying and I didn't give a shit about them or the romance between the main characters.

I expected nothing more from this flick than to enjoy the visuals and that's what I got from it. The ending though, was pretty lame. The last like 2 minutes of the movie, things take a turn for the weird and unexpected.

But all in all, with the exception of the last 2 minutes and the boring and pointless friendship between the 2 friends in the beginning, the movie was pretty damned entertaining.

I actually loved the ending. A much needed glimmer of hope in a very bleak film. You just know he's gonna break free with his girl and tear the shit out of these alien f*ckers.
