Conviction

Conviction-poster-final

Directed by: Tony Goldwyn
Written by: Pamela Gray
Cast: Sam Rockwell, Hilary Swank, Juliette Lewis, Minnie Driver, Ari Graynor, Clea DuVall, Melissa Leo
Studio: Fox Searchlight Pictures
Genre: Biography, Drama, Thriller
Official Site:
Plot: A working mother puts herself through law school in an effort to represent her brother, who has been wrongfully convicted of murder and has exhausted his chances to appeal his conviction through public defenders.

Review:

Hilary Swank annoys me for 107 minutes.

But really, this film is like a poor made for television drama. Hilary Swank is front row, she's annoying, her performance is terrible. Sam Rockwell tries to salvage what he can from such a poorly written script. Some cool cameo's, but nothing really here. Skip the film, read the real story.

Hillary Swank always annoyed me, and still does here... but Rockwell was very good in this. The movie gets a bit slow and uninteresting at times, mostly due to it being greatly about Swank's character, but it was alright.

Saw 3D

Saw3d-poster3

Directed by: Kevin Greutert
Written by: Marcus Dunstan, Patrick Melton
Cast: Tobin Bell, Cary Elwes, Costas Mandylor, Betsy Russell, Sean Patrick Flanery, Gina Holden, Chad Donella, Laurence Anthony, Dean Armstrong, Naomi Snieckus, James Van Patten
Studio: Lionsgate
Genre: Horror
Official Site: www.saw3dmovie.com
Plot: This film continues off well where the first film ended, and we finally see what happened to Dr Gordon (Cary Elwes) after he left that room. Soon enough we find ourselves with a very public trap, involving a threesome gone wrong. We then find ourselves with yet another trap, and the cops are on the scene to investigate. On the other side we see what happened to Det. Hoffman (Costas Mandylor) after Jill Tuck (Betsy Russell) put the reverse bear trap on him at the end of Saw VI. That isn’t enough to stop him, as he goes right back to work and she goes right to Internal Affairs. Meanwhile we see that a ‘Jigsaw’ survivor Bobby Dagen (Sean Patrick Flannery) has written a book on his ordeal and is trying to help other survivors. It isn’t long before his own game of survival begins, and we see how he relates to John Kramer. The battle is on for not only survival but for ‘Jigsaw’s legacy.

Saw 2

2005-saw_two-1

Directed by: Darren Lynn Bousman
Written by: Darren Lynn Bousman, Leigh Whannell
Cast: Donnie Wahlberg, Dina Meyer, Frank G., John Fallon
Studio: Lions Gate Films
Genre: Horror
Official Site: www.saw2.com
Plot: It takes place I assume not long after the first one, it doesn’t mess around and our opening scene is a trap, a nasty trap. The victim here we find out is an informant of police officer Eric Matthews (Donnie Wahlberg) and ‘Jigsaw’ leaves him a message at the scene. Eric and Kerry (Dina Meyer from the first film) get to investigating, and they soon actually find ‘Jigsaw’ (Tobin Bell). But he is still playing a game as Eric’s son is among a group of people (which includes trap survivor Amanda from the first film) in a house set with traps. They have a visual to the house, as ‘Jigsaw’ is recording, and in order to get his son back ‘Jigsaw’ wants Eric to play his game and follow his rules.

Review:

Saw II is a great follow up to the original film, this is a sequel which could have easily failed. But thanks to a great director in Darren Lynn Bousman, who also wrote the script with the original’s Leigh Whannell, this film is a success. I think Donnie is completely underrated. He's become quite the fantastic actor. I wish he got the better roles instead of his brother. Being in New Kids has to have tainted him from that, which is a bummer. I AM DUDDITZ!

Saw

2004-saw-9

Directed by: James Wan
Written by: Leigh Whannell
Cast: Tobin Bell, Cary Elwes, Danny Glover, Dina Meyer, Monica Potter
Studio: Lions Gate Films
Genre: Horror
Official Site: www.sawmovie.com
Plot: Two men Dr Gordon (Cary Elwes) and Adam (Leigh Whannell) wake up in a scummy looking room (a bathroom maybe), both have their ankle’s locked up to a chain. They have no idea how they got there, or why they are there. After finding some audio tapes, they get a tape player off a body that is also in the room, and they hear a message from someone known as ‘Jigsaw’. Dr Gordon works out what might be going on, as he has a connection with ‘Jigsaw’. While these two are trapped, we also see the police investigation of ‘Jigsaw’ and the games that he plays. It doesn’t take long for this to get personal between Det. Tapp (Danny Glover) and ‘Jigsaw’, as he investigates things with his partner Det. Sing (Ken Leung). Slowly motives are revealed, and Dr Gordon and Adam begin to realise what is really at stake and what it will take to survive this game.

Review:

I had not seen Saw since back in early 2005 as a new release DVD, and at the time I loved it. I thought it was such a unique horror film, and I lapped it all up. Usually when I love a film I do not just watch it only once, so why has it taken me so long to revisit Saw? I have no idea, but I am happy I did! I think I loved it even more the second time around, and knowing the outcome this time around I think I picked a lot more up. For those of you reading this review that have not seen Saw, the plot is actually quite simple. Two men Dr Gordon (Cary Elwes) and Adam (Leigh Whannell) wake up in a scummy looking room (a bathroom maybe), both have their ankle’s locked up to a chain. They have no idea how they got there, or why they are there. After finding some audio tapes, they get a tape player off a body that is also in the room, and they hear a message from someone known as ‘Jigsaw’. Black Christmas

2006-black_christmas-1

Directed by: Glen Morgan
Written by: Glen Morgan
Cast: Michelle Trachtenberg, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Katie Cassidy, Oliver Hudson, Andrea Martin
Studio: Dimension Films
Genre: Horror
Official Site: www.blackchristmas.com
Plot: It follows a similar premise to the original, sorority girls are getting picked off one by one. We learn the house they are in has a strange history, in particular to one named Billy (who for some reason the sorority has a weird relationship with), we find out about Billy via flashback’s as well as his breaking out of the Psych Hospital he’s been at. The girls notice one by one they seem to be going missing, getting phone calls from the cell phone of the latest one of them to go missing. Is it Billy doing it all or is there something else going on?

Review:

Black Christmas or Black XMas is a remake of the 1974 film, however these two films do not have much in common. While they both take place around Christmas time and in a sorority house, with the girls receiving weird phone calls and girls going missing, that is about all they have in common. This film does it’s own thing for the most part, going in a completely different direction, and borrowing heavily from a lot of other films. The film seemed to be missing something, and other things were a bit of a mess, I felt the cold hand of studio interference all over this one. While I didn’t think this was the disaster many people have said it was, it wasn’t all that good either. This film sits in the middle of good and bad, while it had somethings going for it, other things were really terrible...[more]...

Piranha 3D

Piranha-3d-french-poster

Directed by: Alexandre Aja
Written by: Alexandre Aja, Greg Levasseur
Cast: Elisabeth Shue, Jerry O’Connell, Ving Rhames, Richard Dreyfuss, Christopher Lloyd, Jessica Szohr, Steven R. McQueen
Studio: Dimension Films
Genre: Horror
Official Site: www.piranha-3d.com
Plot: So we start off our film off on a lake (well it looked like one) and some kind of under water tremor has unleashed some nasty and very hungry piranha fish. This event decided to happen on one of the busiest weeks for the town of Lake Victoria, as thousands of teens and young adults have come for Spring Break. The town Sheriff (Elizabeth Shue) has already found one body, and scientists (the main one played by Adam Scott) have come to investigate the tremor. Meanwhile Jake (Steven R. McQueen) and his friend Kelly (Jessica Szohr) agree to go on board a boat with Derrick (An hilarious Jerry O’Connell) who hosts a Girls Gone Wild type show. Jake also happens to be the Sheriff’s son, and in sneaky fashion leaves his younger siblings at home, who decide to take a row boat out and get stranded. Everything comes together to bring a lot of mayhem, with so much trouble happening already, the piranha’s are ready to unleash their fury.

Review:

I am going to go right off and say it, this film was a blast, no 3-D needed! I am so glad I didn’t see this in 3-D and I went for the 2-D version, it really didn’t need it to start off with and I honestly didn’t need the headache. Unless a film was actually filmed for 3-D using that technology (you know like Avatar), I could hardly careless to see how awful it looks after a post conversion. With that bit out of the way, I shall tell you a little about what this film is about and why I had such a great time with it. So we start off our film off on a lake (well it looked like one) and some kind of under water tremor has unleashed some nasty and very hungry piranha fish. Frailty

2002-frailty-1

Directed by: Bill Paxton
Written by: Brent Hanley
Cast: Bill Paxton, Matthew McConaughey, Powers Boothe, Matt O'Leary, Luke Askew, Jeremy Sumpter
Studio: Lions Gate
Genre: Thriller
Official Site:
Plot: You see Frailty starts off with Fenton Meiks (played as an adult by Matthew McConaughey), he walks into a police station and confronts FBI Agent Doyle (Powers Boothe), and confesses to him he knows who the ‘God’s Hand Killer’ is. As the audience we figure out there must be a serial killer known as ‘God’s Hand’, however as Doyle admits they were told by the killer they wouldn’t find any more bodies. This all sounds intriguing, as Fenton tells Doyle about a phone call he received from his brother Adam, who has since killed himself. While not actually admitting he is this killer in the phone call, Fenton begins to tell Doyle exactly how he knows what his brother has done. We flashback to when Fenton (played here by Matthew O’Leary) and Adam (Jeremy Sumpter) were kids, living with their father (Bill Paxton). We learn it is only the three of them as their mother had since passed away, everything seemed normal until one night Dad wakes them up telling them an Angel had visited him with a message from God. They have to destroy demons, they will be given three weapons and a list of the demons. Fenton believes his father might not be right in the head, as soon enough he brings home a women he claims to be a demon. The killing’s begin, as Fenton doesn’t believe what is going on, while his brother Adam follows everything their father does and says.

Review:

Frailty is easily one of my top 30 favourite films of all time, make no mistake I love this film. I decided to re-watch this for October the horror month as I actually haven’t re-watched this for a few years and I thought it was about time I visited one of my favourites again. Even though I haven’t seen this for awhile, the film loses nothing, in fact with every watch this film just seems to get better. Upon it’s original release here, I saw this twice in the cinema. My first viewing I was in love with this film, and I wanted to see it again, and after that I found myself watching it every few months. So what is it exactly that has me in love with this film? A lot of things actually, although I would say it starts with Bill Paxton. This film marked his feature film debut as director, and this just seemed like the right fit for him as director. The story was something unique and I actually loved how it fit in religion in such a strange way. You see Frailty starts off with Fenton Meiks (played as an adult by Matthew McConaughey), he walks into a police station and confronts FBI Agent Doyle (Powers Boothe), and confesses to him he knows who the ‘God’s Hand Killer’ is. Frozen

Frozen-poster

Directed by: Adam Green
Written by: Adam Green
Cast: Shawn Ashmore, Emma Bell, Kevin Zegers
Studio: Anchor Bay Films
Genre: Horror
Official Site: www.frozen-film.com
Plot: The premise is simple, three friends go skiing and they get onto the chair lift as the last ones, and they get forgotten about. The chairlift gets stopped, and no one is going to be around for five days. The three characters are left with impossible choices and decisions as they are stuck, clinging to life. It is a lose-lose situation, they are stuck high up, it’s freezing cold, and the wolves are around.

Review:

Frozen surprised me, I wasn’t sure what to expect, all I knew was that this was about three people stuck on a chairlift. Who knew that that could make for compelling and at times very frightening viewing? The quote on the poster from bloody-disgusting is correct, this film certainly does for skiing what Jaws did for swimming . I have never been skiing, and I’ve been on a chairlift twice, and after seeing this film I really don’t care to do either of those! As I said the premise is simple, three friends go skiing and they get onto the chair lift as the last ones, and they get forgotten about. The chairlift gets stopped, and no one is going to be around for five days. The three characters are left with impossible choices and decisions as they are stuck, clinging to life. I want to see this just to see Jim Carrey and Ewan McGregor as a couple. I also find the whole "con artist in love" angle interesting. Like, there are people who lie and steal for their own greedy reasons, then there are the people who do it because they think it will help them keep the person they love. Thanks for the review!

Yeah he does that to keep Phillip and stuff, but he also just can't help himself with the conning. They actually work really well together, there are some romantic scenes when they are in prison.

The more I think about it the more I hate it, too. I wonder why that is? Maybe those of us who were looking forward to it and excited for it were initially in denial of just how shitty it actually turned out. But it was, indeed, an epic fail. Waaaaay worse than the remakes of Halloween and Friday the 13th, IMO.

God awful movie. One of the worst of 2010.

Plot: From imdb: Russian inmate Boyka, now severely hobbled by the knee injury suffered at the end of Undisputed 2. No longer the feared prison fighter he was, he has declined so far that he is now good only for cleaning toilets. But when a new prison fight tournament begins - an international affair, matching the best fighters from prisons around the globe, enticing them with the promise of freedom for the winner - Boyka must reclaim his dignity and fight for his position in the tournament

Review:

Undisputed 3 picks up some time after Undisputed 2, we find Boyka (Scott Adkins) is recovering from the knee injury suffered at the hands of Chambers. He isn't the man he once was, he is almost unrecognisable, from his attitude to the way he looks. He's become a toilet cleaner, and it is pretty much the way he prefers to be in prison. But he soon finds that bug, he wants to fight again and he wants to be the best. This leads to him getting transferred to a different prison where a tournament of the best fighters is to take place with the winner told they will receive their freedom. Of course this is not true, the tournament is there for people to make money without a second thought to the fighters. Boyka has to over come the odds, and we're behind him the entire way...[more]...

But he’s set up, and sent to prison for the purpose of fighting in the prison fights. The main man, the prized fighter is Russian Uri Boyka (Scott Adkins) who proclaims he is the best in the world. Of course the fights are there so men can bet and make money, so Chambers finds the odds are stacked against him. He gets help training with the help of Crot (Eli Danker), and it wont be long before you are on the edge of your seat waiting for that final showdown between Boyka and Chambers.

The Runaways

Runaways-poster1

Directed by: Floria Sigismondi
Written by: Floria Sigismondi
Cast: Kristen Stewart, Dakota Fanning, Michael Shannon, Danielle Riley Keough, Scout Taylor-Compton, Stella Maeve, Tatum O’Neal
Studio: Apparition
Genre: Drama
Official Site: www.runawaysmovie.com
Plot: From: imdb.com The Runaways (Neon Angels) is based on lead-singer Cherie Currie's book 'Neon Angel' - a reflection of her experiences as a rock star, but also delivering a strong anti-drug warning to teens and others. David Bowie's "Space Oddity" serves as a metaphor for the narrative-- a slow countdown, a surreal but spectacular rise to fame, then alienation and burnout - a long long way from home.

Damn I still need to see this. My former hatred of Dakota Fanning has strongly deterred me, but I suppose now that she's older the whole "mature" act will be less obnoxious.

Well she does drugs, drinks, kisses Kristen Stewart, looks like a junkie, nothing like what you've seen her do before, I think you'll be surprised.
