STAR TREK: INTO DARKNESS is a fucking blast! It's just as entertaining, action-packed, thrilling, and witty as 2009's STAR TREK. With INTO DARKNESS, director J.J. Abrams has crafted a loving homage to the beloved sci-fi franchise's magnum opus (figure that one out for yourself), all while retaining the energy, spectacle, and freshness of the 2009 reboot. This is the first great summer blockbuster of the year, and it will please fans and non-fans of Star Trek alike. One more thing: Benedict Cumberbatch owns this film, delivering a commanding performance that evokes the work of the legendary Alan Rickman. Go see INTO DARKNESS now!

I'm going with the House Lannister cover :)

Best Buy is gonna have House Lannister and Greyjoy packaging

Strider at 12:29 AM Feb 18

Hell yes!!! Thank you so much, guys! I absolutely love both of the BB covers. I'm leaning more towards House Greyjoy, but I may change my mind once I see them in person. Can't wait! :D

Just returned from seeing Steven Soderbergh's final (?!?!) directorial effort SIDE EFFECTS. I don't want to say too much about it, because I'm afraid I'll spoil something. What I will say is that it's NOT the film you think it is. Soderbergh has crafted a contemporary Hitchcockian thriller that is captivating, stylish (as always), well-acted, and brilliantly deceptive. If this truly is Soderbergh's final picture, then he has ended his career on a high note, delivering one last great entry to his filmography.

Everyone keeps recommending Side Effects. You have sold me on seeing it.

Cochise
Cochise at 09:36 AM Feb 17

I'm not a Soderbergh fan but I do think it looks kind of interesting, mainly because I like twists and I hear a lot about this one's twists and it being unexpected and all that... maybe I'll just ask you, is the twist something other than Channing Tatum dying (which they totally gave away in the trailers, from how I saw them at least... that's the big thing kind of turning me off from it...)?

Mr.Blizzo
Mr.Blizzo at 04:19 PM Feb 17

^The movie is really different from what the trailers make it out to be.

Glad you dug it man! I really liked it too. It most definitely had a Hitchcockian touch to it. I really hope Soderbergh doesn't plan on retiring too soon.

Crazy thought: What if Jessica Chastain and Jennifer Lawrence cancel each other out, and Emmanuelle Riva wins the Oscar for Best Actress? I can't remember if something like this has ever happen before, but it would be quite a surprise, and it would cost people a lot of points for Oscar prediction contests/pools. Just a crazy thought....
JohnLocke2342
JohnLocke2342 at 10:43 PM Feb 12

Yeah honestly I have no idea who is gonna win this race at all. Chastain and Lawrence won the Globes but Riva won the Bafta and Lawrence won the SAG so it's really up in the air with me... I'm reallllly pulling for Chastain though and I know I'm insanely fucking biased but it is what it is lol.

I'd like to see Amour and be able to judge all 3 for myself, though.

Strider
Strider at 10:49 PM Feb 12

Totally agree. This category is tough to call this year. I loved both performances by Chastain and Lawrence, but I'm also pulling for Chastain to win. I haven't seen AMOUR yet. I'm kind of regretting procrastinating on watching that film.

WalkAway at 02:16 AM Feb 13

I've heard only wonderful things about Riva so I wouldn't be surprised it she wins. Obvy I want Chastain though.

DIE HARD 5 is only 97 minutes. WTF?!?! That makes it the shortest Die Hard installment. What a disappointment.
Cochise
Cochise at 08:55 PM Feb 12

I seriously do not get why people are upset about it being under 100 minutes... what's the big deal? It's a straight up action movie, it's better for it to be jam packed and not drag than it is to go overboard. I'm fine with it and hope it means they trimmed all the fat making for a lean mean action movie

Strider
Strider at 10:44 PM Feb 12

Perhaps it is a fun, lean and mean action flick, but the running time is disappointing to me, considering the previous installments run over two hours long. Said running time will NOT deter me from seeing DIE HARD 5, but my expectations are even lower than they were a month or so ago.

Cochise
Cochise at 06:39 PM Feb 13

hey lower expectations = a higher chance of being pleasantly surprised, so there is good in that ;)

My previous status update (which feels so long ago) was about whether or not I should watch HANSEL & GRETEL. A week or so ago, I decided to take a chance on the film, and I'm happy to report it was a blast! A fun popcorn flick that never takes itself seriously. H&G is the film Abe Lincoln: Vampire Hunter should have been.
X-KID
X-KID at 11:29 AM Feb 12

I agree, Abe Lincoln Vampire... Lost me a few times, H&G was fun throughout and kept my attention.

grelber37 at 11:50 AM Feb 12

Hansel & Gretel is a blast, and it does just have fun with itself. Hopefully, you saw it in 3D. But, by any viewing, a person can just have fun.

I agree with this status wholeheartedly.

Should I see HANSEL & GRETEL: WITCH HUNTERS, or should I skip it and wait to rent? I don't know. It's receiving dreadful reviews, but I never allow critics to determine what films I watch or skip. On the one hand, it looks like trashy, Z-grade popcorn entertainment, whereas on the other, it may very well be an abomination of cinema. Who knows? I can't fucking decide! Perhaps I'll wait until I see/read some reviews for it here on MFC.

Until Disney or Lucasfilm confirms the news of J.J. Abrams directing the next STAR WARS film, it's merely a rumor to me. However, if this is true, Abrams will be in charge of both the STAR TREK and STAR WARS franchises, which seems like an impossible task. I'm confident that Abrams can pull it off, though. The Force is strong with this one, and his mission, if he chooses to accept it, will allow him to boldly go where no man has gone before.

It's been confirmed, the issue know is that Abrams hasn't commited to the 2015 release date, that may change if the development process requires it.

I desperately want the Stanley Kubrick Limited Edition Collection Blu-ray set! It's $100 on Amazon, but I can't afford it right now, even though I'm positive it's worth every single penny. I should've bought it when I had the money. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that Amazon will put it on sale sometime this year. Anybody own it???

I bought it the week it came out for the same price. Its a fantastic collection and your right it is worth every penny.

My first celebrity crush is a tie between Carrie Fisher as Princess Leia in STAR WARS and Winona Ryder as Kim in EDWARD SCISSORHANDS.

Oooooh, look at their two pictures (you enjoy beholding their two images no doubt). You have a type. I found the same when pondering my first celebrity crushes. Having a type is outstanding.

I just saw the first trailer for Terrence Malick's latest directorial effort, TO THE WONDER. It's absolutely gorgeous, which shouldn't surprise anyone. I'm afraid I won't be able to stop watching it. Haha! I'm such a massive fan of Malick, and he can do no wrong in my eyes. I can't believe he's coming out with a new film so quickly. He never does this. He usually waits 6-20 years in between films. Haha! TO THE WONDER is easily one of my most anticipated films of 2013. I can't wait!!!

Anyone interested in seeing MAMA? Jessica Chastain stars and Guillermo Del Toro is the producer, both of which are pluses. Still, it might turn out to be another crappy PG-13 horror flick. A trip to the movie theater to see MAMA is still under consideration for me.

According to DIE HARD's official Facebook page, there's going to be a marathon held on February 13. All four films will be shown, concluding with a 10:00 PM screening of A GOOD DAY TO DIE HARD. One day only. Tickets go on sale on January 17. I'm thinking about going, if only to see the original trilogy on the big screen for the first time.
