Just watched Survival of the Dead. I really wish that fact made me happier. What the hell happened to the 20 minutes of mayhem at the end of your zombie films, George? WHAT HAPPENED TO THE MAYHEM?!

Pan's Labyrinth

2006-pans_labyrinth-2

Directed by: Guillermo del Toro
Written by: Guillermo del Toro
Cast: Álex Angulo, Ivana Baquero, Roger Casamajor
Studio: PictureHouse
Genre: Fantasy
Official Site: www.panslabyrinth.com
Plot: A young girl is caught between a civil gritty civil war and a fantastical world of magic.

Review:

I won't go into too much detail here, because, if you're on this site, then there's a 99.99% chance that you've already seen this film. With that considered, I'll just give my condensed two cents and leave it at that.

I didn't dislike Pan's Labyrinth, but I didn't love it, either. I had the same problem here as I do with most of Del Toro's other work, and that's that, wile the creatures are absolutely fantastic, none of them are really there for any concrete reason. For instance, the creature on the poster that I selected for this review: that is a BADASS creature. But why was it in the film? Who knows. The segment involving this thing could have been cut, and the movie would have come off in essentially the same way. I felt that the girl's entire mystical journey lacked even a basic level of coherence, and that, rather than intertwining cleverly with the civil war backdrop, it just served as a sort of side-show. That said, I still enjoyed myself during Pan's Labyrinth, but I can't really see myself ever watching it again.

Review:

The Goods was one of those films that I saw the trailer for, thought "wow, I'd really like to see that," and then didn't end up seeing until it's DVD release. I really wish I'd seen it in theaters...[more]...

Inglourious Basterds

2009-inglourious_basterds-9

Directed by: Quentin Tarantino
Written by: Quentin Tarantino
Cast: Brad Pitt, Diane Kruger, Mélanie Laurent, Christoph Waltz, Daniel Brühl, Eli Roth, Samm Levine, B.J. Novak, Til Schweiger, Julie Dreyfus, Michael Fassbender, Mike Myers, Cloris Leachman
Studio: The Weinstein Co.
Genre: Drama, War
Official Site: www.inglouriousbasterds-movie.com
Plot: A bunch of fictional shit happens during World War II that didn't really happen, and Brad Pitt makes a brief cameo.

Review:

We waited how long for this film to be made? Fifteen years? I remember when this was originally about a group of POWs that were awaiting their executions, a plot that actually sounded GOOD, but, evidently, when that metric fuckton of cocaine shot into Tarantinos skull at the typewriter, the screenplay he turded out decided to venture into La-La Land and just entirely fucking rewrite World War II. Avid fans that have swapped their brains for Blu-Ray copies of this shitmound will tell you that Tarantino did not "rewrite" or "ignore" history, and that this film was simply meant to take on a B-movie, fictional tone to provide an alternate, escapist reality for the pleasures of our moviegoing experiences. This, however, is horseshit...[more]...

Horrible review. It was poorly written, and it took no real issue with anything. This is just a bunch of whining from a kid who probably saw this film with his grandfather.

Plot: two dudes do some stuff a long time ago

Review:

Maybe it's just because I'd heard this movie was a big shitfest for so long, and therefore didn't have the highest expectations for it, but I actually thought it was pretty decent. My biggest problem with it was that, at some point, it ceased to be a series of sketches and started to take on an actual plot, which would have been fine if the plot weren't retarded, and if it had showed up sooner than halfway through the second act. The highlight for me was Bill Hader's brief appearance as a shaman that "hasn't slept for twenty-seven sunups and sundowns," and for the outtake in the film's credits and in which Hader stops improving to say "this isn't making any sense," and then asks to speak to director Harold Ramis. Something gives me the feeling that happened a lot when they were making this movie.

If you're a fan of Black or Cera, or just comedies in general that aren't that great as a whole but host a shitload of cameos from funny people, it's worth checking out.
