Started watching the first season of ENLIGHTENED tonight. What a pleasant surprise this has been. If you need a good series to get into, this is one to catch. It's definitely flawed, but Laura Dern makes it completely worth the ride.

Winter's Bone

reviewed on November 26th, 2012 03:50PM

I sincerely wish films like WINTER'S BONE would get more attention. On the surface, it just looks absolutely dull, but I promise you this: despite a somewhat slow pace, 'dull' is not a word I would use to describe this film. If you're looking for ...

I'm not even sure where to begin with this one. I'll do my best not to spoil anything, as it's one of those films in which the less you know, the better, as I'm sure you've heard (or read) by now. There are many adjectives I can use to describe...

21 Grams

reviewed on October 18th, 2007 08:00PM

An impressive follow-up to Alejandro Gonzales Inarritu's AMORES PERROS, this is a beautifully filmed and amazingly acted piece of human drama that tells its grim tale in a most unconventional fashion. By giving us fragments of each story, past and...

Letters from Iwo Jima

reviewed on September 16th, 2007 08:00PM

It's not often we get to see a war film from the "losing" end, but Clint Eastwood has successfully pulled it off with visual and emotional flair, the likes which I, personally, have not experienced since SAVING PRIVATE RYAN. This is a bleak, slow-...

Ratatouille

The idea of a rat that can cook was definitely an odd concept. That it works so well is a testament to Pixar's creative genius. Ratatouille may not be Pixar's best, but it certainly is their most original work, and just as colorful and entertaini...

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

reviewed on July 17th, 2007 08:00PM

Now THAT'S what I'm talking about. This is a gritty, suspenseful, and entertaining fifth chapter that continues the film series very nicely. It's not a perfect film by any means, but it moves at a good pace, features some terrific performances, an...

Transformers

When I heard that Michael Bay would be directing this, my heart immediately sank. What I ended up with was a loud, fun-filled action extravaganza, and to my surprise, the most entertaining film of the summer. Bay certainly isn't a master of cha...

Transamerica

reviewed on April 29th, 2007 08:00PM

A quirky, fun and touching little movie that covers all the grounds of great moviemaking. You've got a heartfelt story full of wit, humor, and emotion; you've got a great soundtrack, great direction, and above all, wonderful characterisations. You...

Curse of the Golden Flower

"Excessive" doesn't even begin to describe this film. I've been a huge fan of Zhang Yimou's work, but I don't know what that man was thinking here. Even amidst the elaborate sets and costumes, some of the colors clashed--such as the yellow flowers...

Many people have said it, and I'm going to say it too: this is Scorsese's best movie since Goodfellas. It's a high-energy ride sprinkled with an awesome soundtrack, cool and interesting characters, plot twists, and lots and lots of blood (I see wh...

Pan's Labyrinth

reviewed on January 20th, 2007 07:00PM

I hope that everyone, at some point, gets a chance to see this film, because films like this are so rare. It is a seemingly effortless blend of dark human drama and a darkly wondrous fairy tale, visually rich and emotionally satisfying. It's h...

The Fountain

In an age when sequels and remakes are the norm, it's so nice to see that there is still someone out there who appreciates cinema as an art--not as a dumpster for movies which should never have been made to begin with. Darren Aronofsky blew me aw...

Little Children

reviewed on December 20th, 2006 07:00PM

Todd Field is a gifted director with a sharp sense of the good and evil in humanity, and his latest project, LITTLE CHILDREN, is a pointed look at suburban life through a group of characters who are looking for something more in their lives, somet...

I've never seen the original JU-ON series, but if it's anything like this piece of crap, I have no plans to watch it anytime soon. First of all, the script made no sense whatsoever. Somehow, the "grudge" managed to make its way from Tokyo to L.A.-...

The Others
