Star Trek Into Darkness was sharp, energetic sci-fi that never alienates it's audience. It's a roller coaster ride that never sacrifices character for thrills, but finds a strong balance. I felt that Abrams, more than anything, has solidified his brand as the fun Spielberg that checked out years ago. He has the pulse of the event picture down to a formula.

My wife is going to see Magic Mike with her "book club" tonight, even though there isn't a book about it. How the hell does that work? I will stay home and watched a clothed Channing Tatum in 21 Jump Street.

Saw The Avengers for my fourth and final time in the theaters (unless they re-release with 30 more minutes of footage) and I can say that I felt much like I did the first time I saw LOTR: Fellowship...I would've sat in the theater to watch two more sequels if I could. The very definition of a knock out of the park. Except for the literal translation, which is a home run in baseball...

The Avengers is ABSOLUTELY a popcorn flick and wouldn't work any other way. I think that's what makes it so great. Whedon recognized this early on and went for the throat in terms of action and BIG moments. To me, it's the perfect ensemble superhero film. It shouldn't be dark or heavy. It should be fun, cool, and give you the goosebumps.

We've got The Dark Knight to give us the dark stuff. Plus, I am absolutely biased as I love these characters. I've been reading comics steadily since I was ten years old (I still buy new issues every week) and these guys (and gals) have been a staple of my nerdcore upbringing. For me, it's simply amazing seeing them alive and vibrant just as I'd imagine they'd be in the real world.

Now, if they could just find a way to get those Community dickwads off of Cap 2...

I totally agree with you, i don't want marvel or any superhero film for that matter to be The Dark Knight. I feel that every superhero film should have its own style, as Marvel has established, and as Nolan has.

However I felt with The Avengers, there was too much comic relief. When The Avengers assemble it is supposed to be because there is a greater threat then anyone one of the heroes can fight on their own. There is supposed to be a sense of doom, or a major obstacle that is present that The Avengers may or may not overcome. The comic relief is too much especially when I'm supposed to feel the weight of this threat which is to destroy/enslave the earth. (thats quite the stressful feeling, i should be experiencing)

I never once feel the severity of that threat, its always lifted before it really sets in. That really bothered me during this film, had they let it build, and weigh on the viewer, for the climatic ending... Then i would defiantly give it more credit.

Does that make sense at all?

Before I saw the film I worried about it being too "Buffy" but I felt the humor worked perfectly and without it the film would've taken itself way too seriously. As it is, I feel that it was perfectly balanced.

The only smile from anyone during the big battle was from Hulk when Cap told him to "smash." Other than that everyone was intensely focused on the task at hand.

It's a completely crowd-pleasing, stand-up-and-clap kind of movie, not a gut-wrenching nail biter. It's more Rocky than Mission: Impossible. I think if you rewatched with that in mind you may feel differently. However, sometimes folks just see things differently and that's cool. This could be a simple case of that.

I've found that the "way" in which we watch movies can really alter our perception of what we're experiencing. Expectations can be a killer, too, as they're rarely met.

Brave was good, not great. A little too short where it should've been longer and not quite as well rounded as their other flicks. Still, much better than Cars 2, but that's not saying much. Enjoyable, but not a classic, IMO.

how to know you've still got a little immaturity in you -- you look at this and can't stop laughing after realizing the guy who created it is named Carlos Poon... yup. lol

Will be catching Brave this weekend with my son and hopefully Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter with myself when I have the chance to sneak away.

I think there's a very sharp divide between movie geek reviews and "critic" reviews. I think you can find value in either, depending on who's writing them, but I tend to get more out of reviews from folks who love all types of films and not just shit British historical dramas and foreign language documentaries. I've read better reviews on MFC than some of the "professional" stuff out there...

Hey, it's better that the core audience is going, 'cause you're not gonna catch me in the theater to see it. Netflix for sure, though. Especially if the rumor of Olivia Munn boobage is accurate. Hey, everybody wins!

I kind of loved Prometheus. Still stewing over it after seeing it 7 hours ago. It has it's issues, but rises above them overall. I actually can't wait to see it again. Review soon.
