Hey guys, I know you've already read a ton of 'em, but here's my review of Man of Steel anyway. I talk at length about the mythology and universe building, while addressing the "geek hate" that its been getting. Let me know what you think. http://www.wayoftheshirey.com/archives/1028

Promised Land looks like a movie I can go to the end of my days without ever seeing.

The movie should win an award for "Best way to squander a reunion"

Do you think TV is better than film? Explain...
timmyd
timmyd at 03:14 PM Nov 24

Nope . Like Cochise said , there's wayyyyy too much crud on the tube to be the superior medium . Besides , correctly or not , Film somehow FEELS the superior . It's got more of an artistic edge to it than '' AMERICA'S FUNNIEST HOME VIDEOS '' . Call me an elitist .

What about the surge of shows outside of HBO? FX with Sons of Anarchy, American Horror Story, AMC with The Walking Dead, Mad Men, Breaking Bad, Showtime with Homeland, etc.

There was a time, very recently, when TV was easily dismissed as incomparable to film...it seems to me that TV is gaining...and fast.

While I would never forego TV shows over movies or vice versa, as I believe they can coexist peacefully, it does feel that TV/Cable has brought the thunder of late.

^ sorry I just saw this now. Yeah, HBO is still the king and will probably always will be. But Showtime and AMC have both stepped up, FX still needs to have more shows to prove it self though. HBO/Showtime/AMC are great. But again that is like 3 out of 10,000 networks that have great, top movie level programming. There is a long way to go before it catches up I think, but HBO is and has always been HBO -- greatness. Some other networks like those mentioned are starting to have some really good original shows, but they still don't even compare to the long time champ in HBO, and I doubt they ever will tbh.

My God, The Watch was awful. I have found a subject for the next C'mon Hollywood...

Agreed. It was painful to get through.

wow, totally disagree duder. I wasn't expecting much but was really surprised by it. It wasn't perfect but it was damn funny and fun. Better than most comedies this year actually, better than Ted etc. for sure I thought

Skyfall was the most refined Bond film to date. Dark, stirring, emotional, and thrilling, with on point performances from everyone, especially the always haunting Javier Bardem. The more I think about it, the more I love it.

LOL! Little man in candy heaven. Adorable.

Dots! Love those, and they seem to only surface at Halloween

I'll probably help him get rid of some of that. I don't want him to be overwhelmed ;)

Oh, the potential for a new trilogy is so damned thrilling that my brain shits itself just thinking about it.

Man, when are we gonna see something new from Iron Man 3???
Paul Shirey updated his STATUS: 8 months ago

The next time I get a threatening call, I'm going to use the line, "You think I'm a hero? I am NOT a hero." To which they'll say, "Uh, sir, we're not questioning that, we just want you to pay your electric bill."

On the movie-watching agenda this weekend (if I have time due to the many hours I will be spending on photoshop): Shame, Sherlock Homes: Book of Shadows, and, yeah, probably The Avengers.
Cochise
Cochise at 10:13 PM Oct 12

Shame was really good, but had a few things holding it back from being great I thought. Still a damn good movie. Sherlock Holmes: Game of Shadows I assume you're talking about disappointed me. I absolutely loved the first one, but this one was only a 6/10 for me.

Yeah, that's the one. I always fuck that up. I like Guy Ritchie a lot. Wish he would do a modern-set action flick (that's not a heist movie).

Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter was exceptionally disappointing. I had high hopes for a bloody fun romp, instead I got an underwhelming hodgepodge that never gets its footing as a historical mash-up or monster movie horror flick. Damn!

FDR: American Badass is everything Abe Lincoln should have been. Look it up!

Caught Act of Valor on netflix last night. As a combat vet, I've had a lot of peeps ask for my perspective, which is this; I was unexpectedly entertained and on the edge of my seat from start to finish. Superb military tactics on display and some outstanding action sequences. Complaints about wooden dialogue were mistaken for military lingo. These guys talk a very specific way and it was replicated here. It sounds foreign to outside viewers, because Hollywood actors make everything seem bigger and more emotional, which is the opposite of how SpecOps Soldiers/Sailors are trained. Long story short: This IS your Call of Duty movie, complete with rousing action and relative emotions. I look forward to seeing it again.

Cochise at 01:40 PM Oct 08

lol that's exactly what it seemed like to me, Call of Duty: The Movie. Surprised it wasn't just called that, Activision and the studio would've made a shit ton of more money and created a huge movie franchise just because of the games

Paul Shirey
Paul Shirey at 04:56 PM Oct 08

Yeah, these guys would be the studio to hire for that, wouldn't they? Although they've already got the Bandito Bros. on for the Need for Speed pic and Unknown Soldier with Schwarzenegger. I'm looking forward to seeing what these guys do from here on out.

Wow, so...Battleship WAS that bad. Damn. I hope Lone Survivor kicks serious ass or Peter Berg made the worst gamble of his career...
Cochise
Cochise at 11:05 PM Oct 05

he proved he can be a great director with the great surprise that was The Kingdom but man you're right, Battleship sunk... I mean stunk. And not even in a so-bad-it's-good-way even, this coming from someone who loves silly popcorn flicks and cheese fests -- it was just bad. And it wasn't only the directorial choices, the casting (Rihanna was fucking horrid, just disgustingly bad and so was that black amputee soldier guy) blagh... I hope Lone Survivor is more along the lines of The Kingdom in just about every aspect...

Paul Shirey
Paul Shirey at 01:32 PM Oct 08

I have faith that Lone Survivor will be something special. But, man, Battleship was just irredeemable in every way. It felt like a Michael Bay movie from start to finish, especially with all the terribly scripted character interactions (chicken burrito? come on) and overblown effects work. Far from the slick action aesthetics that Berg has displayed in The Rundown, The Kingdom, and even Hancock.

And yes, Rihanna was awful. And didn't even show her tits.
