Hey guys, I know you've already read a ton of 'em, but here's my review of Man of Steel anyway. I talk at length about the mythology and universe building, while addressing the "geek hate" that its been getting. Let me know what you think. http://www.wayoftheshirey.com/archives/1028

Really loving House of Cards on Netflix. Kevin Spacey absolutely OWNS. Best thing he's been in for years. Great show.

Seven Psychopaths was way more fun than I thought it would be. Dark, funny, violent, and kind of deep. Much like McDonagh's In Bruges. Great show!

fantastic movie, glad you dug it too.

Good shit, man. I need to see it again to soak it all in. It really caught me off guard as I thought it would be more of a zany comedy than a dark, violent, black comedy.

You NEED a fucking poncho!

I hope this is a real ad. It will sell ponchos like a muthafucka. This ad could run in certain free, liberal community papers. Thanks for the laugh.

Yo, Schmoes, check out my guest appearance on the MovieFilm podcast. Great discussions on The Last Stand, Zero Dark Thirty, the price of being a movie geek, and all the latest trailers. I had a blast on the show. Check it out: http://everythingbrian.blogspot.com/2013/01/moviefilm-podcast-episode-14.html

Anyone catching Hansel and Gretel this weekend? Anyone already seen it? What's the verdict?

What up, schmoes? How was The Last Stand?

Well I saw it today and I liked it a lot. It was fun. I didn't love it, mainly because in my opinion Arnold wasn't in it enough. That aside, fun flick!

Cool. It looks like it will be fun and nothing more. Of course, it doesn't help that they shoulder Arnold with a ton of co-stars. He's at his best as THE lead with some fun supporting characters that aren't fighting for his spotlight.

Look forward to catching it.

from the sounds of things around here it's a blast... I can't wait to see it myself, hopefully on Tuesday! Hope you dig it Paul

Super stoked to see Dredd again on blu-ray. A true unsung hero of the genre.

Phenomenal List and Presentation man! You're writing was pretty passionate, which is always a treat to read someone's love (and hates) on various films.

Thanks, man! Glad you enjoyed the list. It's always fun to put together once you get to the end of the year and you figure out what you REALLY liked vs. what the popular opinion is on what you SHOULD like. Rarely do they match up. Thanks again!

Jack Reacher was a ridiculous fun movie. It felt like an old-school action/mystery pic with lots of genre hyperbole, but all in good taste and style. It may not blow the box office away, but it was a damn good time.

I loved The Hobbit. And, here's the most humbling part...I loved the 48FPS. A rare moment when a gamble paid off. Is it the future? Well...I think so, actually. Time will tell, as always.

Paul Shirey at 05:01 PM Dec 17

There are certainly scenes where it felt "off" most notably inside Bilbo's house. Everywhere else I loved it. It took a minute to adjust but...man, the battle scenes in particular looked amazing to me.

Again, I still think it's too soon to call, but it is definitely something I'd like to see in other films. There's still tweaking to do, but it looks promising.

As long as they keep giving us the option like with 3D and 2D, then that's fine. Filmmakers, go nuts with it. But if they're gonna completely do away with normal 24 FPS in favor of 48 or possibly 60 FPS in the near future, like a few power names in Hollywood already are urging for, then..........fuck that.

Paul Shirey
Paul Shirey at 11:14 PM Dec 17

Yoshio, I'm with you, man. I think that it's a great option, a terrific cinematic tool, much like slow motion or different film stocks, etc. It doesn't have to be in every movie, I don't think, but there's a good possibility it could take hold.

I'm officially interested to see what happens with it. I don't need all the b.s. gimmicks, but this creative choice felt like just that and not something that was being force fed. Thankfully.

The Five-Year Engagement was a surprisingly great romcom. Great performances from Segal and Blunt. Sharply written, hilarious, and with a soft, gooey, emotional core; I dug the hell out of it.
