Review:

We finally get to see "Crank" directors Neveldine/Taylor new flick Gamer! Was it ready to finally be released? Eh.
It always scares me when a studio decides to sit a movie on the shelf. There's obviously something someone isn't liking. It even started with the title, "Game." How long was it on the shelves? Gamer was finished before "Crank High Voltage" was even made.
After seeing Gamer, it looks like Neveldine/Taylor will stick with the "Crank" style for every movie they will ever make: the fast-paced, video game styling, flashing lights, headache. I have yet to decide if this is a good thing or not, but I'm certainly a fan. (Crank was my favorite movie, Crank 2 sucked, Gamer was a little above average for entertaining purposes) I have decided that the abundance of ass and tits in their movies, will always be welcomed.
With that said and the plot given, the movie could have used a little more work. It's the directors first time with THIS much action in a movie and you could tell. The firing out of weapons during the game looked amateur. I don't know if it was done purposely, but if everything else looked real, why not that? There were a lot of characters I thought they wanted to expand on more but just couldn't fit them in. Alison Lohman was a pleasant surprise to see but she was used for only 10-15 minutes. Efren Ramirez was in a shot for one second. Yeah, it was funny, but shouldn't Ramirez be an actor that requires more time on screen? I have not seen the show Dexter, but i feel I'd like this movie even more if I had. Michael C. Hall has a fanbase and I'm sure they'll be happy to see him in this. Logan Lerman did a solid job as the kid controlling Butler.
Yet, the biggest problem with the flick was the plot. There was one major flaw with the film and it was how did Butler get from here to there? You needed that. It had too many holes and it just seemed like after a while they just said fuck it. Let's just put in more action.
And action there was.
The action really turned the confusing, headache of a movie into a passable time-waster. It's fun to see Gerald Butler not in these chick flicks and back kicking ass even if he is being controlled. Inside the video game, there's a lot of things done that can make a gamer happy. It feels like they've combined real life and video games like multiplayer Call of Duty down to a tee, and you get to see this within the first five minutes of the film. You're watching it as if you're controlling Butler and you see icons, visuals as it were to be in the humanized video game. There were deaths, there was blood, and yes...tea-bagging. Awesome.
You can say what you want about the directors style, but they've got something new and interesting. They have so many crazy shots and great ideas, and with the movie being set in the future, they could really expand on some of those ideas. My favorite, Lerman's room was basically a computer, monitors on every wall, all controlled with a touch. Many ideas in this flick, many very, very interesting. It will only be a matter of time before they finally bring it all together and make one HELLuva movie.
What I can destinctly say about Gamer is that it's not a bad way to waste 95 minutes especially with all the other 'dump' movies being released. And Butler, please continue with these movies and not the chick flicks. 6/10
