My Top 20 of 2012 (Yeah, I know it's late but I had to see all films in consideration)

Lawless
1. The Dark Knight Rises (Christopher Nolan) - Some found it disappointing and a lot of critics love to nit pick at the things wrong with this film. It couldn't possibly have lived up to The Dark Knight. But it was an amazing, emotional and exciting conclusion to my favorite trilogy of all-time. I remember how bittersweet the feeling was leaving the theater from the midnight showing knowing that I would never see a new Nolan Batman movie. But I love TDKR and will never get tired of watching it.
2. The Perks of Being a Wallflower (Stephen Chbosky) - The performances were top notch and I think it translated incredibly well from the book. We've all had to deal with high school and its complexities. I'm sure all of us saw one trait or another in one of the characters that we can relate to. It is a very unique story and brings out several different emotions in the audience.
3. Skyfall (Sam Mendes) - Cinematically I thought this was the best film of the year. Daniel Craig solidified himself as my favorite Bond with this addition to the franchise. Bardem was quite possibly the creepiest and most charismatic villain on the big screen since Ledger's Joker. I find myself holding back from watching this movie often in hopes that I don't get tired of it, if that's even possible.
4. Silver Linings Playbook (David O. Russell) - In Russell's last two films the Academy has awarded three different actors for their performances, and that's not a coincidence. I recently saw 'Three Kings' for the first time and Russell is fantastic at character development. SLP was one of the few films that had 100% of my attention from the very beginning until the credits rolled. Proud that my buddy Blaine's little sister got an Oscar for her phenomenal performance. I've also raved about Bradley Cooper since his role in 'Wedding Crashers' so I'm glad to see he's finally getting recognized for his acting abilities.
5. The Avengers (Joss Whedon) - I don't think I really need any justification of why this movie is so high on my list. It seems like we all loved it and for good reason. The build up by Marvel and the studios to make this film were done so well and efficiently that it seemed almost impossible to bring all of these iconic characters together in one film. But Whedon did it and his final product made a little money (if you hadn't heard). I even contemplated not buying this on blu ray just because the sheer scale of the film could not fully be appreciated on my home entertainment system. But I figured, what the hell, I will still love it on the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 25th, 100th viewing!
6. Django Unchained (Quentin Tarantino) - I would probably list this as QT's third best film behind 'Pulp Fiction' & 'Inglourious Basterds'. If there are any directors that are better storytellers through a camera lens than Tarantino, it's a short list. He also is extremely gifted when it comes to putting together the right cast. Foxx was perfect the role and I'm glad Will Smith turned it down. Waltz & Tarantino seem to be quite the team lately too. Django did just enough to get me to the line of being uncomfortable when watching it in the theater without actually crossing the boundary. I appreciate movies that can bring that kind of emotion out of me.
7. The Cabin in the Woods (Drew Goddard) - Definitely one of the most original horror films in recent years. What a genius way to point out all of the horror cliches together and make a mockery out of them. SPOILER ALERT: It's good seeing the world end for once.
8. Argo (Ben Affleck) - Affleck has solidified himself as a director who I will see any film his name is tied to. The last 30 minutes of Argo might have been the most emotionally exhausting half hour of the entire year. Though exaggerated for dramatic purposes, the film still tells a great story and recognizes a true American Hero.
9. Beasts of the Southern Wild (Benh Zeitlin) - Beasts had some of the saddest and happiest moments in film in all of 2012. Telling this tragic story through the eyes of a child losing her father can be difficult. But Zeitlin nailed the imagination and imagery that a child uses. Great film with a really great score.
10. Wreck-It Ralph (Rich Moore) - The best animated film of the year by far. For anyone who's ever spent more than 30 minutes in an arcade as a child this film hits home.
11. Lawless (John Hillcoat) - Tom Hardy + Jessica Chastain x a depression era shoot em up = fucking awesome. Never thought I'd use Shia LaBeouf in the same sentence as "gritty" but he really showed some range in a role that didn't have him screaming "OPTIMUS!".
12. Killer Joe (William Friedkin) - It was refreshing seeing McConaughey outside of a romcom shirtless for no reason. He was dark and creepy giving us easily his best performance since 'A Time to Kill'. One of the more underrated and unknown films of the year.
13. Zero Dark Thirty (Kathryn Bigelow) - Yeah, maybe it was 'The Hurt Locker' part 2 but it had an intense ending and it's a story that we Americans really wanted to see. Bigelow is one of the most patient directors currently working and Chastain was both cold and warm in a really fantastic performance.
14. 21 Jump Street (Phil Lord, Chris Miller) - I expected nothing from this film based on the trailers. I remember hearing people say it was laugh out loud funny so I did a blind buy. Jonah Hill nails his funny and sarcastic style. Channing Tatum emerged as a damn good comedic actor as well. This is comedy with a ton of rewatchability for me. Glad they're doing a sequel.
15. Prometheus (Ridley Scott) - There was a lot of hype for this, especially with some amazing trailers. A lot of people didn't like Prometheus just for the fact that they didn't understand it. I thought as a prequel it worked very well and from a philosophical perspective was complex and truthful.
16. Life of Pi (Ang Lee) - I really missed the boat (get it?) on seeing this one on the big screen. My one issue was that certain dialogue early in the film built my expectations up too high. Other than that I was a really great story and cinematically beautiful.
17. The Amazing Spider-Man (Marc Webb) - As much as I really enjoy the first two installments by Raimi and his comic book style movies, TASM was IMO a better origin story. The film had its faults for sure. And if you're the type of critic that gets frustrated when exactly logic isn't used than you probably hated this. I ignored some of the faults because they were not that big of a deal and really enjoyed this new direction in the Spider-Man series.
18. Seeking a Friend for the End of the World (Lorene Scafaria) - The world is ending and Steve Carell finally finds true love. Poor bastard. This could have been another run-of-the-mill indie com but instead the actors and their performances gave us a much better movie that deserves high praise.
19. Sinister (Scott Derrickson) - Damn, what a creepy movie. The realness of the super 8's that were shown and their graphic nature was a nice touch in a horror genre that has recently stooped to relying simply on the over use of gore. I'd like to see one sequel but certainly not a franchise that would run a very eerie villain into the ground.
20. Looper (Rian Johnson) - People seemed to like this movie a lot more than me. I loved its originality but I was extremely distracted by the CGI of Gordon-Levitt's face. The kid, who really looks like a young Orson Welles, might have given the best performance in the film. And that's saying something considering JGL, Emily Blunt and Bruce Willis were all costars.

Iowa loves and reveres Field of Dreams. I believe that the state even preserves the cornfield from the film. It is a tourist attraction.
In some way or another, No Country for Old Men captured a piece of Texas. The Coens are great at finding aspects of states and then embellishing those aspects in their movies.

My Top 20 of 2011 (as of now)

Attack-the-block-poster8
1. Hugo (Martin Scorsese) - Yes, it is well documented that I am a huge Scorsese fan. That aside I reallly enjoyed this film and found it more of an experience than just a simple viewing. I wasn't fortunate enough to see it in 3D in theaters but it looks amazing on blu ray and viewing Scorsese basically write his love letter to the history of film was magical. Definitely my favorite movie of the year.
2. Drive (Nicolas Winding Refn) - Gosling is a bad ass. Refn makes ridiculously cool films. The most original film of the year with the best soundtrack. A ton of rewatchability and characters that you can discover more about after each viewing.
3. The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo (David Fincher) - Fincher seems to find his way on to my list every year. I just recently saw this for the first time to see what all of the hooplah was about and I was not disappointed. Mara lived up to the hype with her character and although I guessed the ending about half way through I still was intently focused on the screen the entire film.
4. Warrior (Gavin O'Connor) - Three great performances and hands down the best sports film of the year. It's not often you genuinely care for each competitor in a final bout. Nolte was fantastic and the conflicts within the family were very original.
5. The Descendants (Alexander Payne) - Payne's best film since 'Election'. From Clooney's in-experienced, conflicted father character to Woodley's rebellious yet mature daughter character, hell even Krause as the dopey friend who in just one scene makes you pull a 180 on your opinion of him, each character is developed so well.
6. Take Shelter (Jeff Nichols) - Probably the creepiest film of the year for me. It's one of those "I hate to say I told you so" films and Shannon nails it as usual.
7. Attack the Block (Joe Cornish) - This film was a video game brought to the big screen. A bunch of delenquents holding down their part of town against an Alien invasion? Where do I sign up. I hope to see more of John Boyega (Moses) in the future as he had a very strong presence on screen.
8. The Help (Tate Taylor) - I've read the articles about how this film actually damages the image of the Civil Rights movement. And there is somewhat of a viable argument to that. But it managed to be one of the real "feel good" films of the year with some powerful performances.
9. Rise of the Planet of the Apes (Rupert Wyatt) - I have not seen a single film from this franchise until this one. They could have gone so many different routes with this but chose a very daring direction which paid off. I don't know how much rewatchability the movie has but I've seen it once and really enjoyed it.
10. 50/50 (Jonathan Levine) - I normally despise Seth Rogen but his character was amazing in this. I don't think I've ever said this about anyone before but JGL was an awesome cancer patient. One of the more emotionally driven films of the year for me.
11. Super 8 (J.J. Abrams) - I would consider this my generation's 'E.T.' in terms of an Alien film with a real family vibe to it. Elle Fanning and Joel Courtney have bright futures ahead of them.
12. Crazy, Stupid, Love. (Glenn Ficara, John Requa) - Yeah, it's the second rom com on the list but I really liked this movie. I am a big fan of the TV show 'Modern Family' and this movie had a very similar vibe to it. Carell did his usual quirky, uncoordinated character and Gosling showed real finesse as the teacher.
13. X-Men: First Class (Matthew Vaughn) - When it comes to comic book films, Vaughn is quickly becoming a rock star. Fassbender really made a name for himself to the general public as Magneto and I think this origins film sufficed for true comic book fans.
14. Hesher (Spencer Susser) - JGL kicks ass in this movie and his bizarre relationship with a kid and Portman's register working character somehow gel really well. Hesher uses brute force in his decision making which is unique for the "hero" in most films.
15. Friends With Benefits (Will Gluck) - I normally hate rom com's but there are a few exceptions and this is one of them. Timberlake proves to actually be funny and Mila Kunis does her usual hot thing. It is the concept that we've all tried in our lives at some point and had to learn on our own that it just doesn't work. It is an originally cliche movie with a lot of laughs.
16. Martha Marcy May Marlene (Sean Durkin) - I am not normally a fan of ambiguous endings but this one I dug. Elizabeth Olsen creates a sexy, caring yet complex character. The entire film creates an eerie vibe that keeps you focused on both stories taking place.
17. Source Code (Duncan Jones) - Jones' follow up from 'Moon' was extremely impressive. I don't think it needs to have a TV show based on it but the first time viewing really keeps you guessing. The concept is so simple yet so complex and the character relationship between Gyllenhaal and Monaghan really brings out emotion in the viewer.
18. Rango (Gore Verbinski) - You just have to enjoy a film that can take current issues and tranlsate them into a kid friendly film that adults can still enjoy. The Fear and Loathing reference still makes me laugh every time.
19. Thor (Kenneth Branagh) - Hemsworth was made for this role. As far as Marvel films go this was one of my favorites. The sarcastic humor along with the characters introduced (a badass little cameo by Hawkeye) really teed up my expectation for 'The Avengers' which will certainly be in my top 5 for 2012.
20. Fast Five (Justin Lin) - The best of the series by far. This installment of the series actually built a story and brought every important character from the series together in a creative way. It was a fun, action-packed movie and The Rock was a walking, one-line ass-kicker.

If you ever, ever, ever get the chance you HAVE to see Hugo in 3D, I just can't get over how amazing the 3D was and how much it added to the movie. Wish it would've stayed in theatres longer (and been in IMAX 3D)!

as for the 'as of now' part of your list... there may be a few 2011 flicks in here, especially in the top 5, that you haven't seen that I think are must sees for EVERY movie fan, so check em out if you will! http://www.moviefancentral.com/cochise-2/top10s/19152

My 10 Favorite Things from 2010

Emma_2
1. My DUI - This is not a typo nor a joke. This was the worst thing that has happened to me in a long time. The Saturday of Labor Day weekend I went out and had some drinks with some friends and played pool at a pool hall. I could have taken a cab home but I felt confident enough to drive. Coming up over a hill there was a blockade where the police were breathalizing every car that drove though. There was no way around it and I was taken to jail. Once I was bailed out at 11AM the next morning I went home and went to sleep. I worked that monday from 11-8 and then drove the 70+ miles home to my parents house and told them what had happened. I thought my mom was going to kill me while my dad started asking me how to get everything taken care of. It was my first offense so I had a license suspension, alcohol classes, and one hell of a fine. But looking back I'm almost glad it happend. First off, I didn't kill anyone. That's always a plus. Second of all, I'm 24 and I do have a large social life so I go out a lot and there have been plenty of times where I drove home when I definitely shouldn't have so this was a real wake up call. Lesson was certainly learned. Finally, it is really what got the wheels moving on my steps toward Law School. Yes it was a burden and a terrible thing, but in a fucked up, twisted way it might have been a blessing.
2. The LSAT - A lot of shitty stuff happened to me this year. This might have been the most trying year I've had to go through personally. After a lot of things happend in the fall of this year, I was pretty down and out. But instead of drinking my sorrows away and thinking about all of the ways life is bad, I finally saw it as an opportunity to stop procrastinating about the LSAT and Law School and to get started on things. I took the Kaplan classes, completed the LSAT on December 11th and am currently in the process of figuring out where I want to go this fall.
3. Kentucky Basketball - I am a New York guy through and through, but being in Kentucky the majority of my life there is one thing this state lives for and that's college basketball. Rick Pitino and his Cardinals in Louisville had been running the state for a few years but now that Kentucky (my alma mater) landed John Calipari it has sparked a whole new excitement around town. People think he's a cheater and that it will all come crumbling down at some point. But who cares? I'm watching entertaining basketball and that's all I've ever asked for. Seeing guys like John Wall, DeMarcus Cousins, Brandon Knight, and Terrence Jones before they get to the NBA is something I will cherish forever.
4. My Cousin's Wedding - The ceremony was in Long Island, NY and the reception was out in the Hamptons. There was nothing particularly special about the wedding, but it was seeing my entire family together for the first time in a few years. Seeing my grandmother happy with her 7 other sisters. Seeing some of my cousins with their kids now and the next generation of our family slowly evolving. My Uncle Richie telling me stories about how he and my Dad (who acts like he's never done anything wrong in his life) used to get hammered at Knicks or Ranger games and then head out on the town. Seeing 300 Italians get together with a band playing nothing but Sinatra. It was the only real vacation I took this summer but it was the best one that I could have asked for.
5. Getting over Ex-Girlfriend - The moving certainly helped but it was personal growth that really got me past everything. It's hard to describe in words but it is such an indescribable feeling for such strong feelings you have for someone who doesn't share that with you anymore to finally be lifted. You're not thinking of them when you go to bed. Not worried about running into them when you're out on friday/saturday night. You're just ready for the next one and if it's not tonight, maybe tomorrow.
6. Movies of the year - It wasn't the best year for movies but I can pull a few out from this past year that I know I will enjoy for years to come. Inception was mind blowing, Shutter Island was fantastic and held true to the book, The Town was solid and Black Swan and True Grit finished out the year well.
7. Getting my first acting job - A good friend of mine who is brilliant and currently in grad school to one day become a director asked me to be lead role in his first film. I have been working on the script for a few weeks now and even though we don't start shooting until the end of this month I consider it part of 2010 because the origin of it came from last year.
8. My 8th Grade 10 Year Reunion - When I told people I was going to this they looked at me like I was fucking crazy. The truth of it is that I graduated 8th grade with a class of 42 from a private school where we all lived within 4 square miles of each other. It was an extremely close group that was kept from the rest of the world growing up. Public high school was quite a wakeup call. We all found new groups to run in and not many of us stayed in contact. Plus the fact that I am not on Facebook makes it much harder to keep up with everyone. Even though only about 20 of the 42 showed up to the reunion, it was enough to get drunk, reminisce, and most importantly catch up.
9. Moving - It was only across town but it really felt like a much needed new start. I had only been living in the past place for 2 years but it was in the same part of town as my ex girlfriend which sucked, and everything in that area was very routine. I really want to get out of this state but if I couldn't move out of Kentucky/Lexington I could at least move across town. Not to mention it's a a free standing house opposed to a townhouse where I was previously.
10. Eminem CD "Recovery" - The rap game had been suffering for quite a while. Eminem's work had also been suffering for quite a while. Encore made it seem like Em was falling off and Relapse/Refill just plain sucked. Recorvery not only rejuvenated Eminem but the entire rap game as well.

1. - Always something positive to be taken from a negative. And hey, you're better off than Roger Avary...

2. - Congrats!

3. - Cousins shows great potential, but does some pretty stupid things sometimes. Boy needs to gain some professionalism, both on AND off the court.

7. - Congrats again!

Thanks for sharing. I'll actually have my own list to post pretty soon as well.

My 10 Favorite Martin Scorsese Films

Martin_scorsese_mii
1. Goodfellas (1990) - My all-time favorite movie. De Niro, who is my favorite actor plays one of my favorite characters, Jimmy Conway. The entire cast is excellent and the story is unbeatable. I'm a sucker for mob movies and there isn't a better one out there.
2. The Departed (2006) - The baton seems to have passed from De Niro to DiCaprio. This remake is one of the best movies of the decade. An absolute all-star cast ensemble and one of Scorsese's best directing jobs.
3. Taxi Driver (1976) - Although it seems to be outdated which is unlike most of Scorsese's films, De Niro gives us an A+ performance as Travis Bickle. The way this movie develops makes it more entertaining each time viewed.
4. Gangs of New York (2002) - Some hate this movie but I love it. DDL puts on a wonderful performance as a very likeable villain. Maybe that's just the Jimmy Conway in me rooting for the bad guys. The sets built for this film are one of Scorsese's best.
5. Raging Bull (1980) - De Niro shows us why he is one of the greatest ever at his craft with the transformations in his physical stature for this film. He truly brought the character of Jake LaMotta to life on screen. Now, and rightfully so this movie is considered one of the best films of the '80s.
6. Shutter Island (2010) - The best part about this film is the way Scorsese still gives us an impressive product while stretching pretty far outside of his element. Scorsese shows us again why he is the best at casting actors perfectly for his characters.
7. Casino (1995) - De Niro and Pesci carry this movie. I liked the story but I think the acting is what really impressed me about the film overall.
8. Cape Fear (1991) - This remake not only lives up to the original, but almost eclipses it. De Niro's Max Cady is charasmatic and terrifying all at once. The scenes with Juliette Lewis and De Niro together create such tension you find yourself moving closer and closer to the TV.
9. Mean Streets (1973) - I recently viewed this for the first time and enjoyed it. I'm sure like most of Scorsese's films it will get better each time I watch it.
10. The Aviator (2004) - I had no idea who exactly Howard Hughes was until this film. I enjoyed seeing each side of his life brought out in this film rather than the usual glorified lifestyles that most directors gives us these days.

My Top 12 of 2009

Tumblr_l002m7irbs1qz65iu
1. Avatar - The story has been done before, but not with these types of visuals. One of the best movie experiences I've ever had. Cameron did not disappoint me.
2. The Hangover - Funniest movie since Old School. Zack Galifinakis and Ed Helms are now on the map.
3. Adventureland - Jessie Eisenberg was great in this and Kristen Stewart showed that she can do more than just follow vampires.
4. The Hurt Locker - One of the most suspenseful movies I've ever watched. It was refreshing to see a war movie with no agenda.
5. Public Enemies - Johnny Depp was an awesome John Dillinger. Was chaotic at times but found it to be Mann's best since Heat.
6. Inglourious Basterds - QT's best since Pulp Fiction. Witty and funny in a very dark way.
7. Zombieland - Sometimes you need to just take off your thinking cap and enjoy some good old fashion zombie domination.
8. District 9 - Amazing special effects and a very cool way to translate real world issues into an alien war.
9. Taken - I didn't think Liam Neeson could be more badass, but now he is.
10. Star Trek - I'm no trekkie but I loved this movie! Can really open up Star Trek to a broader audience.
11. Moon - Fantastic acting and very entertaining.
12. Paranormal Activity - Innovative and original in a lately stagnant horor genre.
Natty
Natty at 12:42 PM Mar 17

Interesting list, seeing as Public Enemies & Adventureland are so high (I'm gonna have to get around to seeing that last one). Love that Zombieland is on the list, it's one of the funnest movies of the decade. I also agree that part of what made Hurt Locker so good is that it wasn't too sentimental or preachy.
