Saw

2004-saw-1

Directed by: James Wan
Written by: Leigh Whannell
Cast: Tobin Bell, Cary Elwes, Danny Glover, Dina Meyer, Monica Potter
Studio: Lions Gate Films
Genre: Horror
Official Site: www.sawmovie.com
Plot: A young man named Adam wakes to find himself chained to a rusty pipe inside a decrepit subterranean chamber. Chained to the opposite side of the room is another bewildered captive, Dr. Lawrence Gordon. Between them is a dead man lying in a pool of blood, holding a .38 in his hand. Neither man knows why he has been abducted, but instructions left on a micro cassette order Dr. Gordon to kill Adam within eight hours. If he fails to do so, then both men will die; Dr. Gordon's wife, Alison, and his daughter will also be killed. Recalling a recent murder investigation by a police detective named Tapp, Dr. Gordon realizes he and Adam are the next victims of a psychopathic genius known only as "Jigsaw." With only a few hours left to spare, they must unravel the elaborate puzzle of their fate in the midst of mounting terror. The killer has provided them with only a few clues and two handsaws--too weak to break their steel shackles, but strong enough to cut through flesh and bone.

Review:

No matter what anyone say, i think that this is a great horror/thriller film, and it really shows how being stuck in a room with another person can really screw with your mind, and what it can force you to do. I think that the idea of Jigsaw, and the franchise was good, but its been too hollywoodised, and has been ruined. The sooner they end it the better.

Big Fish

2003-big_fish-1

Directed by: Tim Burton
Written by: John August
Cast: Ewan McGregor, Albert Finney, Jessica Lange, Danny DeVito, Helena Bonham Carter, Steve Buscemi, Billy Crudup, Alison Lohman, Hailey Anne Nelson, Robert Guillaume, Marion Cotillard
Studio: Columbia Pictures
Genre: Drama
Official Site: www.sonypictures.com/homevideo/bigfish
Plot: A story about a son trying to learn more about his dying father by reliving stories and myths his father told him about himself.

Review:

There is only a limited few Tim Burton films that i can stand, and this is one of them. I think this film was well thought about and emotional meaning is so much more than any other Burton film.

Ewan McGreggor is brilliant in this film, and gives a good performance, even though he had to go through some random things.

But overall i think this is one of Tim Burton's best, maybe even THE best, and it is heavily under-rated.

Adam

Adam-poster

Directed by: Max Mayer
Written by: Max Mayer
Cast: Hugh Dancy, Rose Byrne, Peter Gallagher, Amy Irving, Frankie Faison
Studio: Fox Searchlight
Genre: Drama
Official Site:
Plot: Adam, a lonely man with Asperger's Syndrome, develops a relationship with his upstairs neighbor, Beth.

Review:

Adam is one of those films where not a lot happens. However don't be fooled into thinking that makes it a bad film. In fact quite the opposite, instead of cluttering the film up with vast silly story lines, it focuses on a relationship between these two brilliant people.

Adam is a very indie and charming film. The film is made by its cast, both Hugh Dancy and Rose Byrne are fantastic together, and in this relationship they make each other better people, and Adam is finally able to get over his Asperger's.

But what completes this film is its soundtrack. Every song is carefully picked and works brilliantly, Joshua Radin's - When You Find Me is just chillingly beautiful.

Children of Men

2006-children_of_men-1

Directed by: Alfonso Cuaron
Written by: Alfonso Cuaron, David Arata, Timothy Sexton
Cast: Clive Owen, Julianne Moore, Charlie Hunnam, Michael Caine, Chiwetel Ejiofor
Studio: Universal Pictures
Genre: Thriller
Official Site: www.childrenofmen.net
Plot: In 2027, as humankind faces the likelihood of its own extinction, a disillusioned government agent agrees to help transport and protect a miraculously pregnant woman to a sanctuary at sea where her child's birth may help scientists to save the future of mankind.

Review:

Children of Men really steps it up and shows that hollywood i doing too much sitting on its arse. Cuaron shows his world in style in what is quite a chillingly real, and gritty future. He takes some human themes and shows you how crazy the world would go if a tragic thing like this happens.

Its a surprise to say that Clive Owen is very good in this film, and Caine equally as good, even though his death scene was quite horrible and just a little bit funny at the same time.

This film leaves you a bit depressed afterwards, but don't let this put you off. It is a fantastic film, and movie enthusiasts would love it for its dynamic and well thought about shots.

Road To Perdition

2002-road_to_perdition-1

Cast: Tom Hanks, Paul Newman, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Jude Law, Tyler Hoechlin, Daniel Craig, Albert Molina, Stanley Tucci
Studio: Dreamworks Pictures
Genre: Crime, Drama
Official Site: www.roadtoperdition.com/
Plot: Mike Sullivan works as a hit man for crime boss John Rooney. Sullivan views Rooney as a father figure. However after his son is witness to a killing he has done Mike Sullivan finds him self on the run trying to save the life of his son and at the same time looking for revenge on those who wronged him. Jude Law co stars as a hit man hired to kill Sullivan.

Review:

This is the second film i've watched today with Tom Hanks in, and he has died in both. Never the less Road to Perdition is a brilliant film. Mendes has made this film look stunning with all the period dressing. The film had a great cast, Tom Hanks ws brilliant as always, and Jude Law makes for a very good assassin.

I can say i was expecting a sad ending. But the music definitely made the film even more powerful with its soft piano melody. This is definitely a must see.

Thankfully I have already seen it, so it doesn't affect me, but you might want to tread carefully on how you write your reviews. You have massive spoilers and apparently you don't know it. Just wanted to give a heads up.

But team spirit and a healthy self confidence may lead to a few surprises in the upcoming Winter Games.

Review:

Cool Runnings is one of those films you used to watch and love as a kid. Everytime i watch it, it takes me back to that time, therefore its hard to say bad things about it. Cool Runnings has a charm, a charm that hardly anyone can get away from. It's lightheartedness makes the truth behind the story even more enjoyable.

Also for the type of film it was, there wasn't as many cliches as you would have thought. The ending shows that, you don't always have to win, its all about respect.

A genius comedy! I piss myself laughing throughout the entire movie and it always makes me feel good at the end. I want my future kids to watch it as well when they're young.

The Book of Eli

Book-of-eli-poster4

Directed by: Albert Hughes, Allen Hughes
Written by: Gary Whitta
Cast: Denzel Washington, Gary Oldman, Mila Kunis, Ray Stevenson, Michael Gambon
Studio: Warner Bros.
Genre: Action, Thriller
Official Site: thebookofeli.warnerbros.com
Plot: A post-apocalyptic Western, in which a lone man fights his way across America in order to protect a sacred book that holds the secrets to saving humankind.

Review:

For the fact that more or less all of this film is green screen, i can only praise the Hughes Bros. for this, visually it looks stunning. Some very good performances from both Washington and Oldman. However throughout the film there always seemed to be something lacking. Like a bit more back story, and maybe a bit less Mila Kunis.

This film screamed twist, however i was still very surprised by the ending. However i can't help but think that the last 5 minutes of the film were a bit lacklustre, and a bit pointless.

Not a bad return for the Hughes Bros., however i want to see better.
