Review:

Rounders is a perfect example of an underrated film. One would think that its excellent cast would pull people in, but many are put off by the subject matter. As a friend said, "Eh, I don't really want to watch a movie about poker." Prior to my first viewing of Rounders, I didn't exactly share this thought, but I certainly didn't expect what was to come.

The film is packed with extremely realistic and memorable characters, each trying to scrape their way through life with what they have. Throughout the film, each character faces reality in their own, unique ways. Even the most minor of characters, such as Petra (Famke Jannsen), are layered and genuine. Mike and Worm have interesting chemistry, but the most powerful moments are Mike's interactions with Judge Petrovsky (Martin Landau), and those with the great John Malkovich. Teddy KGB is one of the most memorable, most quotable characters of all-time... "Meester son-of-beetch!" Still, at the heart of the film is Matt Damon, who has never been anything but awesome.

The musical score is low-key, but when it kicks in at certain times, it can be pretty moving. It really fit well with the mood of the story.

It seems like everything worked in this film. Many scenes revolve around a game of poker, but it's never dull. Mike explains every angle, thought, or reason behind a move, and every emotion that runs through his mind. In many films, narration becomes annoying or a distraction, but Damon's narration works perfectly here. It's not overused, and it always gives a more intimate view of the situation.

Rounders is a finely acted, well-directed film that is alive with unique and realistic characters that will keep you interested throughout. I highly recommend it, even if you don't like poker.
