Best way to describe this movie is that someone read "This Present Darkness" and then watched "Terminator" way too many times. The movie pretty closely follows Terminator's story form, with the Archangel Michael (Paul Bettany) playing the role of Kyle Reese, out to protect a pregnant mother's child who will become the savior of mankind. (Bonus points for the pregrnant mom being a waitress just like Sarah was). There is a lot of scenery chewing in all the performances, especially with the down-home accents, which were awful. Many of the characters do not get a chance to breathe beyond their one-note cutouts, which is too bad, because the assembled cast is pretty decent, but they just never get a chance to break free of the cliches. This movie pulls from a lot of other movies, some zombie films, 'Pet Semetary', and even a little bit of 'In the Mouth of Madness', but the Terminator vibe really drowns everything out. Down to the director even using the 'highway' shots Cameron was so fond of in T2. The effects are first rate except for some dodgy work involving an infant, but come on, you didn't really believe they would do that to a real infant right?
Overall, not great, not bad, bottom line: "The Prophecy" did it better.
