Bad Teacher

Bad-teacher-poster

Directed by: Jake Kasdan
Written by: Gene Stupnitsky, Lee Eisenberg
Cast: Cameron Diaz, Justin Timberlake, Lucy Punch, John Michael Higgins, Jason Segel
Studio: Sony Pictures
Genre: Comedy
Official Site: www.areyouabadteacher.com
Plot: Some teachers just don't give an F. For example, there's Elizabeth (Cameron Diaz). She's foul-mouthed, ruthless, and inappropriate. She drinks, she gets high, and she can't wait to marry her meal ticket and get out of her bogus day job. When she's dumped by her fiancé, she sets her plan in motion to win over a rich, handsome substitute (Justin Timberlake) - competing for his affections with an overly energetic colleague, Amy (Lucy Punch). When Elizabeth also finds herself fighting off the advances of a sarcastic, irreverent gym teacher (Jason Segel), the consequences of her wild and outrageous schemes give her students, her coworkers, and even herself an education like no other.

Review:

Entertaining enough but could have been so much more. Segel's character definitely had some of the better lines, but Timberlake's character was really goofy. I found myself really not caring for the plight of Diaz's character, and I really thought that Lucy Punch was much hotter than Diaz anyway.

Insidious

Insidious-poster-1

Directed by: James Wan
Written by: Leigh Whannell
Cast: Patrick Wilson, Rose Byrne, Barbara Hershey
Studio: FilmDistrict
Genre: Horror, Thriller
Official Site: www.insidious-movie.com
Plot: Saw franchise veterans James Wan and Leigh Whannell team with Paranormal Activity writer/director Oren Peli to give the familiar haunted house story an exciting new twist with this tale of a family that moves into an old house and begins to suspect they are under siege from otherworldly forces when their young son inexplicably falls into a deep coma. As devoted parents Josh (Patrick Wilson) and Renai (Rose Byrne) struggle in vain to uncover the root cause of their son's condition, the stress of the situation gradually begins to take its toll on their once-strong relationship. Later, when darkness falls and specters appear to reach out for them from the shadows, the frightened parents realize they're dealing with powers beyond human comprehension.

Review:

One intense as hell movie. Takes some of the good parts of poltergeist, the exorcist, and paranormal activity and mixes them all together for one horrific formula. Hell of a lot more effective than any slasher movie could ever dream. I made the mistake of watching this before I went to sleep, so now I don't wanna go lol...at least I left the light on though.

Just Go With It

Just-go-with-it-poster-1

Directed by: Dennis Dugan
Written by: Timothy Dowling, Tim Herlihy
Cast: Adam Sandler, Jennifer Aniston, Nicole Kidman, Brooklyn Decker, Nick Swarsdon
Studio: Sony Pictures
Genre: Comedy, Romance
Official Site: www.justgowithit-movie.com
Plot: In Just Go With It, a plastic surgeon, romancing a much younger schoolteacher, enlists his loyal assistant to pretend to be his soon to be ex-wife, in order to cover up a careless lie. When more lies backfire, the assistant's kids become involved, and everyone heads off for a weekend in Hawaii that will change all their lives.

Review:

You could see where this would go from the very beginning. Very surprising chemistry between sandler and aniston though but it enjoyable enough. Odd cast that included Nicole Kidman and Dave Matthews (yes that one), but looking back he's been in a few Sandler movies, that I just haven't noticed. And odd to see Dan Patrick and Andy Roddick, but then again we get it Adam Sandler you know lots of people. Moving on, there are worse ways to kill a couple hours.

Your Highness

Your-highness-poster-2

Directed by: David Gordon Green
Written by: Danny McBride, Ben Best
Cast: Danny McBride, James Franco, Natalie Portman, Zooey Deschanel
Studio: Universal Pictures
Genre: Adventure, Comedy, Stoner
Official Site: www.yourhighnessmovie.net
Plot: Throughout history, tales of chivalry have burnished the legends of brave, handsome knights who rescue fair damsels, slay dragons and conquer evil. But behind many a hero is a good-for-nothing younger brother trying just to stay out of the way of those dragons, evil and trouble in general. Danny McBride and James Franco team up for an epic comedy adventure set in a fantastical world--Your Highness. As two princes on a daring mission to save their land, they must rescue the heir apparent's fiancée before their kingdom is destroyed. Thadeous (McBride) has spent his life watching his perfect older brother Fabious (Franco) embark upon valiant journeys and win the hearts of his people. Tired of being passed over for adventure, adoration and the throne, he's settled for a life of wizard's weed, hard booze and easy maidens. But when Fabious' bride-to-be, Belladonna (Zooey Deschanel), gets kidnapped by the evil wizard Leezar (Justin Theroux), the king gives his deadbeat son an ultimatum: Man up and help rescue her or get cut off. Half-assedly embarking upon his first quest, Thadeous joins Fabious to trek across the perilous outlands and free the princess. Joined by Isabel (Natalie Portman)--an elusive warrior with a dangerous agenda of her own--the brothers must vanquish horrific creatures and traitorous knights before they can reach Belladonna. If Thadeous can find his inner hero, he can help his brother prevent the destruction of his land. Stay a slacker, and not only does he die a coward, he gets front row seats to the dawn of an all-new Dark Ages.

Review:

I've seen far better jokes in non-comedic movies, but damn Natalie Portman and Zooey Deschanel looked great in it though.

The Descendants

Descendants-poster

Directed by: Alexander Payne
Written by: Alexander Payne, Nat Faxon, Jim Rash
Cast: George Clooney, Judy Greer, Matthew Lillard, Beau Bridges, Robert Forster,
Studio: Fox Searchlight Pictures
Genre: Comedy, Drama
Official Site: www.foxsearchlight.com/thedescendants/
Plot: From Alexander Payne, the creator of the Oscar-winning Sideways, set in Hawaii, The Descendants is a sometimes humorous, sometimes tragic journey for Matt King (George Clooney) an indifferent husband and father of two girls, who is forced to re-examine his past and embrace his future when his wife suffers a boating accident off of Waikiki. The event leads to a rapprochement with his young daughters while Matt wrestles with a decision to sell the family's land handed down from Hawaiian royalty and missionaries.

Review:

Heartbreaking and joyful at the same time. Matt King takes his family along on his journey through the grieving process simultaneously having to deal with his wife in a coma, learning that his wife was having an affair, and deciding on a major land deal that would affect the entire state of Hawaii, also trying to deal with his 2 rebellious daughters and one giant douche-bag. (""You little fuck! Do you get hit a lot?!" ) He's got a lot on his plate, and this could come off as a convoluted mess easily, but it does not as the direction in this is top notch. As is Clooney and the oldest daughter Alex played by Shailene Woodley, who i think defintely got snubbed in the best supporting actor category for the Oscars. Anyways, great little movie and I will be checking out Payne's other top rated movie Sideways as soon as I can.

I just got back from the theater and I have to agree with you, loved it. I was suffocating and suffering right along with the characters waiting for a big cathartic release, not a lot of films can really grip me like that. Sublime acting all around and even that "one giant douche-bag" who I even wanted to sock in the face ends up having some redeeming qualities.

I think what struck me the most was how real it felt, probably mostly because of the amazing performances. Yes, the entire situation was tragically ridiculous but at the same time it was grounded in reality I at least seemed to connect with.

Side note; I need to watch March of the Penguins again thanks to Morgan Freeman's voice making a cameo.

The Artist

The-artist-poster

Directed by: -1
Written by:
Cast:
Studio: The Weinstein Co.
Genre: Foreign Film
Official Site: www.theartistmovie.net
Plot: Hollywood 1927. George Valentin (Jean Dujardin) is a silent movie superstar. The advent of the talkies will sound the death knell for his career and see him fall into oblivion. For young extra Peppy Miller (Berenice Bejo), it seems the sky's the limit - major movie stardom awaits. The Artist tells the story of their interlinked destinies

Review:

Kind of like watching a NFL game with throwback uniforms.

Two leads who couldn't be more charming and carry a movie that is nearly silent in its entirety. A bold move with today's attention deficit viewers who flood the theaters for CGI fighting robots but ignore the one's that actually have a story to tell. Facial expressions and body language are key as in most silent movies, but portraying that has to be a lot more difficult that saying a few lines of dialogue. It goes to show why there were far better actors of yesteryear.

Real Steel

Real-steel-poster-final

Directed by: Shawn Levy
Written by: John Gatins
Cast: Hugh Jackman, Evangeline Lilly, Dakota Goyo, Anthony Mackie, Kevin Durand
Studio: Walt Disney
Genre: Action, Drama
Official Site: www.SteelGetsReel.com
Plot: A gritty, white-knuckle, action ride set in the near-future where the sport of boxing has gone high-tech, Real Steel stars Hugh Jackman as Charlie Kenton, a washed-up fighter who lost his chance at a title when 2000-pound, 8-foot-tall steel robots took over the ring. Now nothing but a small-time promoter, Charlie earns just enough money piecing together low-end bots from scrap metal to get from one underground boxing venue to the next. When Charlie hits rock bottom, he reluctantly teams up with his estranged son Max (Dakota Goyo) to build and train a championship contender. As the stakes in the brutal, no-holds-barred arena are raised, Charlie and Max, against all odds, get one last shot at a comeback.

Review:

Gotta say, a lot better than I expected, for those expecting Rock 'em Sock'em Robots the movie it is so much more than that. Real Steel is fun and it does have tons of heart even though Hugh Jackman's character is a giant asshole, but I guess it goes to show that even giant assholes are redeemable, well at least in Hollywood fairy tales.

Is The Rock some kind of franchise fixer or something ? Can you smell what the Rock is cooking ? Princess Diaries 3: The Royal Smackdown ? What do you think? … It doesn’t matter what you think. Know your role and shut your mouth!

No but seriously the last 3 movies his filmed (not released) are sequels of franchises he wasn't originally apart of, Fast Five, Journey 2: The Mysterious Island, and GI Joe Retaliation.

War Horse

War-horse-poster1

Directed by: Steven Spielberg
Written by: Lee Hall, Richard Curtis
Cast: Emily Watson, David Thewlis, Peter Mullan, Niels Arestrup, Tom Hiddleston, Jeremy Irvine, Benedict Cumberbatch, Toby Kebbell
Studio: Dreamworks
Genre: Drama, War
Official Site:
Plot: Set against a sweeping canvas of rural England and Europe during the First World War, War Horse begins with the remarkable friendship between a horse named Joey and a young man called Albert, who tames and trains him. When they are forcefully parted, the film follows the extraordinary journey of the horse as he moves through the war, changing and inspiring the lives of all those he meets-British cavalry, German soldiers, and a French farmer and his granddaughter-before the story reaches its emotional climax in the heart of No Man's Land. The First World War is experienced through the journey of this horse-an odyssey of joy and sorrow, passionate friendship and high adventure.

Review:

I didn't feel the movie was really special in any way, after watching it really surprised with the Oscar nom, I've seen plenty of films this year that were far superior to this. No stand out perfomances other than the duck from the beginning of the film, seriously I was hoping that the duck and the horse would bond and become friends or something. It dragged on in several parts and really considered fast forwarding. Every time the kid was whining about his horse I wanted to punch him in the face. Gotta give credit to Spielberg though he tried to make us emotionally connected to the horse, but it didn't take at least for me, and I can't say I can't connect with animals because there have been other films with animals that I've connected with, plus there was the damn duck in this one. I loved the goddamn duck for some reason.
