I like Joss Whedon's work. I really do. Firefly is one of my favorite shows of all-time. I think that The Avengers was a dream project for him. However, I don't think that anybody could have made this movie work.
Whedon's humor shows up every now and then but not as much as most fans claim. The final sequence is quite entertaining but at no point in this movie do you feel that any of the characters are in real danger. Where is the suspense? The characters all fell flat and only served as pawns for the action sequences. Yes, I realize that it is tough to develop characters with so many needing equal screen time. But c'mon! Make me care!
I felt like the entire first 3/4's of the movie was slow, boring and uninspired. Did they need to spend 45 minutes on a flying aircraft carrier?
The whole thing felt lazy. Every plot point. Every bit of dialogue. I'm sure Marvel had no problem tossing loads of cash into the special fx to pretty it up and distract you from the film's flaws. This was just a greedy trick by Marvel to empty your wallets.
I'm looking forward to The Dark Knight Rises. Now there is a movie that will have substance.
