The House of Yes (1997)
"Sorry about that, by the way, I didn't mean to maim you. I only meant to kill you." The House of Yes is an unapologetic Dark Comedy and I absolutely love it for that. Parker Posey gives one of her best performances. Posey stars as 'Jackie-O' a very mixed up and troubled young lady who has been having an incestuous relationship with her brother Marty played by Josh Hamilton. Marty and his fiancée Lesly played by Tori Spelling arrive on a stormy night to have thanksgiving dinner with Marty's family. Jackie-O doesn't know who Marty is bringing to dinner and immediately there is a bigger storm brewing inside than there is outside.
Jackie-O let's her jealousy for Marty's fiancée be know right away and she is all over Lesly in a battle of wits and words. Parker Posey's dialog and delivery of that dialog is nothing short amazing, she just destroys Lesly in a very comedic way. I loved the stormy atmosphere in which this night takes place, it just gave the film this very close feeling. I also liked Geneviève Bujold's performance as Mrs. Pascal she had some very comical dialog as well.
The story is rather simple but it's the dialog and the performances that make this something very unique. Dark Comedy is my favorite genre and this is definitely going in my top twenty comedies of all-time. If you're a fan of Dark Comedy and films that walk their own paths then this one is a must see.
