Review:

When this movie was in the works I was excited for it. I heard there was problems getting it started, getting actors and directors, but through it all I was reading how the script was phenomenal. Then it hit theaters finally with a great cast and great director but didn't do so well in theaters. I can kind of see why.
I just finished watching it about one hour ago, the film was interesting, the characters very detailed, the story was almost tight, and overall the movie was I would say 20 minutes longer than it needed it to be.
This movie was like a poor man's Departed, the ending was somewhat similar yet the story was not. The style of shooting was Scorcese, even though it wasn't, but I guess when you make a movie in NY about drugs and cops you either think Scorcese or Lumet.
I love these types of movies, the good cops, the bad cops, and their families. You really get that feel in this movie as every character was trying to do their best for their families and communities. Ethan Hawke's character just needed money to get his pregnant wife and their 5 kids into a better home, and he was willing to do whatever it took to get the job done. Richard Gere's character was seven days from retirement when he comes face to face with a choice to help a victim or turn his back and make it not his problem. Then there is Don Cheadle's character who is so deep undercover he can't get out until he just does one more thing, which very well may cost him his life.
My onle problem with this movie was the length of it, I think it was too long and needed some tweeking on the editing. Overall I enjoyed it, I liked the shots, the actors were top notch (even a good amount of the cast was from the show The Wire), and the cinematogrophy was beautiful.
If you like Pride and Glory, In Too Deep, Training Day and the Departed, you will enjoy this movie.
