The Book of Eli

Book-of-eli-poster4

Directed by: Albert Hughes, Allen Hughes
Written by: Gary Whitta
Cast: Denzel Washington, Gary Oldman, Mila Kunis, Ray Stevenson, Michael Gambon
Studio: Warner Bros.
Genre: Action, Thriller
Official Site: thebookofeli.warnerbros.com
Plot: A post-apocalyptic tale, in which a lone man fights his way across America in order to protect a sacred book that holds the secrets to saving humankind.

Review:

Early on you know the film has a twist coming, it has that kind of feeling, but while your so sure you know what this twist is going to be...you can be certain that you wont get it right. The pay off at the end is what makes this film have 3 stars, even though Oldman and Washington do so so well to act the hell out of this Kunis lets them down slightly not hitting the tone correctly and the story isn't exactly perfectly told. In a sentence the plot lingers and the film could have been shorter. While it has a few stand out scenes theres nothing that's going to make me remember this in a few months. There is points of the film where your just waiting for Eli to kick some ass, which are some of the stand out scenes. Stylistically its a very sexy film, The Hugh's Brothers owe them selfs that, but with all the projects surfacing what they could have been involved with instead of this, you've got to ask yourself why Eli?

Daybreakers

Daybreakers-poster

Directed by: Michael Spierig, Peter Spierig
Written by: Michael Spierig, Peter Spierig
Cast: Willem Dafoe, Ethan Hawke, Isabel Lucas, Sam Neill
Studio: Lionsgate
Genre: Horror
Official Site: www.daybreakersmovie.com
Plot: In the year 2019, a plague has transformed most every human into vampires. Faced with a dwindling blood supply, the fractured dominant race plots their survival; meanwhile, a researcher works with a covert band of vamps on a way to save humankind.

Review:

I think low expectations helped me enjoy this film a lot more than some people. I thought it was an interesting concept and even though the film slipped into the normal conventions eventually there was some brilliant things going on. All the acting chops were here and while lead Eathan Hawke was out-acted by Dafoe, he still did a good enough job carrying the film. Thats not to say it's without any flaws and plot holes but it was enough to keep me entertained if nothing else.

Avatar

Avatar-poster1

Directed by: James Cameron
Written by: James Cameron
Cast: Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Stephen Lang, Michelle Rodriguez, Sigourney Weaver
Studio: Fox
Genre: Action, Adventure, Science-Fiction
Official Site: www.avatarmovie.com
Plot: A paraplegic marine dispatched to the moon Pandora on a unique mission becomes torn between following his orders and protecting the world he feels is his home.

Review:

The first screening I went to for this I fell asleep for a little while (nothing to do with the quality of the film) but I'm glad I did because I got to view it again. The parts I had seen for a first time I was able to ignore and just view the sheer beauty of the world of Pandora, especially in 3D. Its hard to just forget how much design work must have went into creating this special world and Cameron must be proud. I think the film surpassed expectations of most people who thought it would be a CGI extravaganza, it was much more. The story isn't the most original, we've seen it before we will see it again, but that didn't make me feel like Iv'e seen this film before. The scenes are 100% beautiful but its the last hour of the film when the main action kicks in and is just astounding to watch. Because you have made this connection with the characters you just root for them. Worthington, Lang and Weaver are the lasting performances here but not to take away from Saldana or Rodriguez who were both superb. If your are one of the few who havent seen this then I urge you to, contribute to that impressive billion dollars it has already made and I cannot urge you enough to see it in 3D. The world just comes alive and it is the first 3D film to...[more]...

Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakuel

Alvin-chipmunks2-poster1

Directed by: Betty Thomas
Written by: TBA
Cast: Jason Lee, Justin Long, Matthew Gray Gubler, Jesse McCartney, Anna Faris, Christina Applegate, Amy Poehler
Studio: Fox
Genre: Family
Official Site: www.munkyourself.com
Plot: The world famous singing pre-teen chipmunk trio return to contend with the pressures of school, celebrity, and a rival female music group known as The Chipettes.

Review:

I really enjoyed THE Chipmunks first outing, it put a smile on my face and all the children in my family. While not one of my most anticipated films of the year I was excited to see it. I think its nice to see a kids film once in a while so long as you attack it without a critical eye for film making. I'm pleased to say that I really enjoyed this one just slightly less. The official reviews can suck it, the kids in the screening I was in LOVED it. If you liked the first one you'll like this one equally.

Nine

Nine-musical-poster

Directed by: Rob Marshall
Written by: Anthony Minghella, Michael Tolkin
Cast: Daniel Day-Lewis, Penelope Cruz, Nicole Kidman, Judi Dench, Kate Hudson, Sophia Loren, Stacey Ferguson, Marion Cotillard
Studio: Focus Features
Genre: Musical
Official Site: www.nine-movie.com/
Plot: Famous film director Guido Contini struggles to find harmony in his professional and personal lives, as he engages in dramatic relationships with his wife, his mistress, his muse, his agent, and his mother.

Review:

I wanted to love Nine as much as I did Chicago but from about 20 minutes in I realized it wasn't meant to be. The songs lacked any sort of enjoyment, the story was slow, the humor was subtle which I got...with subtle laughter. It looks damn stylish and the guy knows how to light a superb cast I just don't think Nine was the right musical to take from the stage. It it were to win an Oscar it would be for best Cinematography, or song, doesn't deserve it though. Avoid it!

Jennifer's Body

Directed by: Karyn Kusama
Written by: Diablo Cody
Cast: Megan Fox, Amanda Seyfried, Adam Brody, J.K. Simmons
Studio: Fox
Genre: Comedy, Horror
Official Site: www.jennifersbody.com
Plot: A newly possessed cheerleader turns into a killer who specializes in offing her male classmates. Can her best friend put an end to the horror?

Review:

This is pretty much a prime example of a film made for a wide audience that I dont feel part of. Sure it was sexy, slick and funny at times, but that doesn't make it less silly. I think if I was younger and didnt know any better, this would be worth of the best film of all time. I can get why people would think that. However I dont find Megan Fox likeable, I dont dig teen horror infact the only reason this has two stars is for the kick ass soundtrack it had. Maybe one day Diablo will write something like Juno again...maybe....

Zombieland

Zombieland-poster

Directed by: Ruben Fleischer
Written by: Rhett Reese, Paul Wernick
Cast: Woody Harrelson, Jesse Eisenberg, Emma Stone, Amber Heard, Abigail Breslin
Studio: Sony Pictures
Genre: Horror, Comedy
Official Site: www.zombieland.com
Plot: The horror comedy Zombieland focuses on two men who have found a way to survive a world overrun by zombies...

Review:

This is in some ways visionary....we all know the conventional horror zombie movie...and thats boring. What Zombieland does successfully is it knows how to have fun, so the audience does too. I sat there totally entertained by the quirky style of superbad meets zombies. Eisenberg has a future ahead of himself taking the leading role ahead of Harrelson. Just a fun fun fun film, watch it!

Sherlock Holmes

Directed by: Guy Ritchie
Written by: Michael Johnson, Anthony Peckham, Guy Ritchie
Cast: Robert Downey Jr., Jude Law, Rachel McAdams, Mark Strong
Studio: Warner Bros.
Genre: Action, Adventure
Official Site: www.sherlock-holmes-movie.com
Plot: Detective Sherlock Holmes and his stalwart partner Watson engage in a battle of wits and brawn with a nemesis whose plot is a threat to all of England.

Review:

When I seen this film yesterday I was fully prepared to give it three stars but after sleeping on it and re-watching the trailer accidentally I realized I loved it a lot more than I thought. The plot is clever, the dialog and relationships in it are brilliant and the acting is superb. Sherlock Holmes won't dissapoint the fans and wont dissapoint a modern day audience either, its just a speedy 2 hour joy ride. You may have to concentrate in some parts so it's not entirely a no-brainer. Just go and see it and personally I am hoping for a second installment.

Where The Wild Things Are

Where-the-wild-things-are-poster5

Directed by: Spike Jonze
Written by: Spike Jonze, Dave Eggers
Cast: Catherine Keener, Max Records, James Gandolfini, Angus Sampson, Forest Whitaker, Lauren Ambrose, Catherine O'Hara, Rachel Rivera, Melissa Davis, Paul Dano
Studio: Warner Bros
Genre: Adventure
Official Site: wherethewildthingsare.warnerbros.com
Plot: An adaptation of Maurice Sendak's classic children's story, where Max, a disobedient little boy sent to bed without his supper, creates his own world--a forest inhabited by ferocious wild creatures that crown Max as their ruler.

Review:

As I sat there from the beginning I just had a smile on my face. The score, Spike Jonze's style, the acting, the Indie feel...it is a blend that works. I wasn't going in to judge how well he adapted a 15 page children's book, its a friggin' Jonze film, its not Harry Potter. However on that note I think he tapped into the audience that really matters, the kids who have now grown up. A kids film this isn't, there is some heavy themes in this film and it was brave of the studio to let him run with that, but I think it works. Its dark, its moody...its emo in some ways. I thought Max did a fantastic job, for a 9 year old he carried that film well. The CGI in the faces was perfect. I will be first in line to buy the DVD upon release but right now I'm making do with the superb soundtrack.

New Moon

Directed by: Chris Weitz
Written by:
Cast: Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson, Taylor Lautner
Studio: Summit Entertainment
Genre: Horror, Romance, Thriller
Official Site: www.twilightthemovie.com
Plot:

Review:

I just don't think I'm the target audience for New Moon, I just dont get the fascination. Don't get me wrong, I really liked the first one, I thought it was stylish. But New Moon forgets that and just becomes...what paying audiences wanted it to be I guess. The acting from Lautner is wooden, I spent half the film wanting Pattinson to show up and start acting. But kudos to Stewart who carried the film from start to end. Highly average, I'm sure there are many people who totally disagree with my views but hey...maybe I'm just jealous of Lautner...the perfect bastard.

2012

2009-two_thousand_twelve-1

Directed by: Roland Emmerich
Written by: Roland Emmerich, Harald Kloser
Cast: John Cusack, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Danny Glover, Amanda Peet, Thandie Newton, Oliver Platt
Studio: Sony Pictures
Genre: Action
Official Site: www.whowillsurvive2012.com
Plot: An epic adventure about a global cataclysm that brings an end to the world and tells of the heroic struggle of the survivors.

Review:

Emmerich in many ways is Michael Bay but better. Through the outer shell of a massive CGI bonanza was the first decent disaster movie plot in a while. The special effects were astounding, seeing individual people on the ground is just astounding detail to put in and I had a fun ride throughout. It may be a tad long but it didn't stop my enjoyment. Cusack was brilliant, I really begun to love the guy, as was Amanda Peet. Just don't go in expecting intelligence, go in to be entertained and through the cheese and silliness you will just love it.

The Fourth Kind

Fourth-kind-poster5

Directed by: Olatunde Osunsanmi
Written by: Olatunde Osunsanmi
Cast: Milla Jovovich, Elias Koteas, Will Patton
Studio: Universal Pictures
Genre: Science-Fiction
Official Site: www.thefourthkind.net
Plot: There are four kinds of alien encounters. The fourth kind is abduction.

Review:

From what I believe this film has been universally panned by critics. Hit the headlines for the false messages it leads the audience to believe, and just generally had bad word of mouth. So my hopes weren't high going into the cinema. And after toying with the idea for a good hour the film found its way and impressed me from then on. It's not without its flaws, it feels sloppy in places in terms of editing and directing, in fact it feels like it was directed by several different people throughout. But ignoring all that, it turned out to be a very thought provoking film. Falsely advertised as shit-your-pants scary I believe that gave it injustice, The Fourth Kind is much more than that. In most places it reminded me of the brilliant Mothman Prophecies. Nothing is ever seen, it lets your mind roam free, and thats what is scarier than anything else I've seen lately. Anybody with a brain can tell the "real" footage isn't real, the whole film is based loosely on fact, it just creates its own little world. But still at the end it left you to make your own mind up...which I liked.

Plot: A reporter in Iraq might just have the story of a lifetime when he meets Lyn Cassady, a guy who claims to be a former member of the U.S. Army's New Earth Army, a unit that employs paranormal powers in their missions.

Review:

The Men Who Stare at Goats was just delightful to watch. It never took itself too seriously, the humour was subtle and even slightly coen-esque at parts. The entire cast was just great and looked like they were having fun. I left the cinema with a smile on my face. Just go and see it, you'll see what I'm talking about!

Paranormal Activity

Paranormal-activity-poster

Directed by: Oren Peli
Written by: Oren Peli
Cast: Katie Featherstone, Micah Sloat
Studio: Paramount Pictures
Genre: Horror
Official Site: www.ParanormalMovie.com
Plot: After moving into a suburban home, a couple becomes increasingly disturbed by a nightly demonic presence.

Review:

Every once in a while a film will slip under the radar and become a huge success sparking a mediocre career in a harsh world. I don't believe we have that here. Paranormal activity uses a dating concept but makes it creepier than we have ever seen it before. It works and can scare the shit out of you at any moment. The acting was good and the style works. Of course I'm ignoring the astounding fact that this was made for under 10 grand which is just going to launch Oren Peli into the mainstream. A clever use of simple storytelling, no music needed and plenty of frights along the way Paranormal Activity is one of the cleverest horror films in a while.

Disney's A Christmas Carol

Christmas-carol-poster111

Directed by: Robert Zemeckis
Written by: Robert Zemeckis
Cast: Jim Carrey, John Cleese, Gary Oldman, Alan Rickman, William H. Macy, Cary Elwes, Colin Firth, Bob Hoskins, Robin Wright Penn
Studio: Walt Disney Pictures
Genre: Animation
Official Site: www.disney.com/christmascarol
Plot: An animated retelling of Charles Dickens' classic novel about a Victorian-era miser taken on a journey of self-redemption, courtesy of several mysterious Christmas apparitions.

Review:

Jim Carrey is always to be taken with a pinch of salt always. Sometimes he is funny, sometimes he is just damn right annoying. However his ott performances really help with his portrayal of scrooge. As darker story than most previous versions a Christmas Carol is a hit in most places, a miss in some. For a start I feel like it was too long, I got bored in places. But the 3D was terrific, for once I can actually say the 3D brought something to it. In parts the action is genuinely terrifying and was scary for me, not to mention kids. A Christmas film which is worth seeing, go see it.

Moon

2009-moon-2

Directed by: Duncan Jones
Written by: Nathan Parker
Cast: Sam Rockwell, Kevin Spacey
Studio: Sony Pictures Classics
Genre: Science Fiction
Official Site: www.sonyclassics.com/moon/
Plot: Astronaut Sam Bell has a quintessentially personal encounter toward the end of his three-year stint on the Moon, where he, working alongside his computer, GERTY, sends back to Earth parcels of a resource that has helped diminish our planet's power problems.

Review:

An absolutely genius small budget film which just proves that its all about the story rather than everything else. It did shock me the direction the plot took about midway through the film, but it felt fresh and original. Superb acting from Sam Rockwell and its refreshing to have a creepy computer who isn't the bad guy. Totally worth buying on DVD!

Genre: Science fiction

Plot: A pair of crew members aboard a spaceship wake up with no knowledge of their mission or their identities

Review:

Its hard to review this as a horror or sci fi film..because it kind of blends the two unsuccesfully. As a sci fi film...the ideas and story and design is fantastic and would have really strenghtened itself by playing with the psychology rather than introducing the "Hunters" which is where the films main idea drags it down. There was potential in this film, it just unsuccessfully executed itself wrong and lost the scary element 40 minutes in...making the last hour a drag.

Plot: An updated version of the 1980 musical, which centered on the students of the New York Academy of Performing Arts.

Review:

After the success of High School Musical some executives somewhere probably decided it was time for a re-boot of Fame which is unfortunate for everyone involved. A genuine re-boot that everybody wanted probably would have benefited this film, but right now there is no passion, plot nor any interestest raised at all. It is a bore from about 20 minutes in until the end...I feel like all of the characters stories were pointless and none of them were ever wrapped up. Unfortunate and painful to watch.

Review:

When I,Robot came out about 5 years ago a lot of critics panned it unfairly and I feel like surrogates is suffering from that exact problem. I personally loved it for the fun...I wont remember any of it in years to come but to watch it isnt a painful experience. The action is adquate, the plot is passable and the plot doesnt take itself too seriously...which maybe could have made it better in the end.
