Had to leave early because of my very late night last night (Damn drinking) but had a good time with the Star Trek chat, never got to vent my frustrations about the ending but for the most part I said what I needed to and it's clear the film is liked well-enough by Trekkies and non-fans alike (here at least). Next week I revisit a film I've been meaning to for a while, Super 8. God if I cry during that home movie scene again I'm gonna sulk.

Martha Marcy May Marlene

reviewed on February 4th, 2012 09:04AM

Right from the start of Martha Marcy I could see the similarities to Winter’s Bone, the almost wordless opening minutes show a group of people cut off from normal society, they have their own customs and rules and live how they want to live. We th...

There Will be Blood

reviewed on February 1st, 2012 03:33PM

What makes There Will Be Blood such a great film is pure and simply three words; Daniel Day Lewis. His fantastic performance as Daniel Plainview is easily one of the best I’ve ever seen, it’s hard to tell when he’s acting and when he’s not – if th...

Drive

reviewed on January 28th, 2012 02:08PM

SPOILERS Drive was my favourite film of last year and it’s still amazing on its second viewings. It’s a simple story, heist gone wrong, but the style and aesthetic of the film all carry it above and beyond the usual action film. Right from the be...

I’m throwing a SPOILER WARNING up but I think we all already know the twist. “People are always asking me if I know Tyler Durden.” Fight Club is a film that requires two viewings, the first to get the full story, the second to see all the th...

The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters

I grew up in the 90s so I didn’t grow up with the coin-eating arcade games and while I do play a lot of video games I never play competitively. So to see these grown men spend hours upon days upon weeks of their lives playing these games is an i...

Coriolanus

reviewed on January 20th, 2012 12:58PM

The first thing that will strike you about Coriolanus is the dialogue. It’s lifted straight out of the Shakespeare play but it’s set in a modern day country – the place is never named but described as calling itself ‘Rome’. At the start the grand ...

Haywire

Haywire is, in a nutshell, a pretty good action film, very good for a January release. At the heart of it lies Mallory Kane played by MMA fighter Gina Carano who for someone who hasn’t acted before is very great in her role. She plays Mallory as a...

“No!” Damn this movie was great, it was a smartly written sci-fi story that slowly built up to one of the best action films of recent years. Andy Serkis once again puts in a brilliant performance as Caesar, everyone of his expressions is life...

I can say with very little doubt that Captain America is probably the best of the Marvel Movie Universe so far, it’s got a perfect blend of action, humour and drama as well as a great performance heading the whole project. Putting the story in th...

Wow Two films into 2012 and I may have just found my favourite of the year. Shame is fantastic, the performances and direction are some of the best I’ve seen in recent years. It is easily one of Michael Fassbender’s best roles, certainly his br...

As I’ve mentioned before I had no intention of seeing War Horse, I heard it was good but it wasn’t on my most anticipated list. How stupid a decision that was? War Horse was fantastic, a deeply moving, feel-good film following the trials and tri...

50/50 is a film I went into knowing it would be good but what I didn’t know was how much I would enjoy it. What made the film so great to me is the same reason why I enjoyed Bridesmaids in that there’s a lot of heart; these are real situations tha...
