Zombie Movie: Scene 5
CUT. MONTAGE OF DEXTER’S TYRANNICAL RULE.
Jared talks over the montage.
Jared (V.0.): Things changed when Dexter took over, sure there was more food available but there was less people to get food and that small number was getting smaller and smaller each day. The soldiers were barely recruits, they kept making mistakes when they went out to collect food and kept getting killed. It’s been two weeks since Dex took control and we’re down to five soldiers out of the 15 that arrived here. It’s not just them that have died either, a few doctors that Dexter forced to go out have been killed and a couple of patients. But it’s not always the creatures that kill us. With tensions running high some people tend to get a little more violent than usual, we’ve had a couple of the patients kill each other in fights but that’s not the main problem. About a week ago one of the patients and one of soldiers raped a doctor, when Dex found out he drove the patient out into the forest...
CUT. THE FOREST, AFTERNOON. Dexter puts a gun on the back on the patients head, the patient is on his knees with a bag on his head. Dexter callously pulls the trigger.
Jared (V.O.): And executed him, left his body out for the creatures, the soldier survived but as punishment Dexter cut his dick off. He may be tough but at least he’s tough on everyone. It didn’t matter in the end the soldier shot himself a couple days later Dex didn’t care; to him it wasn’t two more bodies it was two less mouths. As much as I hate him I think he’s got the right idea of thinking, ‘Survival at any costs, the hell with the consequences.’
CUT, JARED’S ROOM. EVENING. The montage ends with a knock on Jared’s door. Text appears on screen reading 7 Months, 1 Week, 1 Day since outbreak. Jared turns to see Haley standing at the door. He turns off his tape recorder.
Jared: Hey.
Haley: Hey, I’ve seen you do a few of those tape things, why?
Jared: It’s part of my condition.
Haley sits down on a chair.
Jared: I’ve got O.C.D., it was pretty bad a couple years ago and I used to make a hell of a lot more of these. Helped with my work but they took up so much space.
Haley: What did you used to do?
Jared: I was a policeman, detective if you want to be specific. I’ve had my condition since childhood and I thought I could put it to good use by catching criminals but instead it just exacerbated it. Before I finally came here I had spent a over a year on this one case and got nowhere, almost cost me my job, my family, everything.
Haley: You have a family?
Jared: I did. I’m not sure if I still do. I have a daughter, Carol, she’ll be eight by now. Haven’t seen her in a while. Her mother was an old girlfriend, we never got married but we were happy living together.
Paige runs into the room.
Paige: They’re back. They need help.
Jared and Haley follow Paige to the foyer.
CUT, CONTINUOUS, FOYER. Elliot and Edward carry a soldier through the doors into the asylum, the soldier is bleeding from a large bite wound on his leg. They place the soldier on a table, Alan runs over to them.
Alan: What happened?
Elliot: There was a creature in the store, they had crawled into the wall and we didn’t see it. Jumped out and bit him.
Alan: Alright someone tie his leg off and get me a saw.
Dexter runs down the stairs.
Dexter: What is this, why is he still alive?
Alan: We can still save him.
Dexter: Bullshit, he’s been bitten he needs to be killed now.
Alan: No Dex. I’m sure I can save him.
Dexter looks furious but he walks away. Alan starts operating on the soldier, he ties rope around the leg and starts cleaning it for amputation. But he doesn’t get far, Dexter runs back into the room holding a shovel. In surprise Alan jumps out of the way just as Dexter smashes the shovel down onto the soldiers head. Dexter does this repeatedly until the soldier’s head caves in and blood and brain matter splatters around.
Dexter: That is what we need to do.
Alan: What the fuck is wrong with you, we could’ve saved him.
Dexter: Last I checked I was in charge, we do what I say, no question.
Alan: You only got in charge because you’re a bully.
While Alan and Dexter argue Paige looks at a pistol left on a crate. As she looks at it Ruby appears.
Ruby (Whispers): Do it.
Paige: What?
Ruby: Do it, pick it up and shoot him.
Paige: Who?
Ruby: Who do you fuckin think, Dexter. Nobody likes him, you’ll be a fuckin hero. Pick up the gun and shoot him in the head. Do it. Do it.
Paige’s eyes never leave the gun as her hand slowly reaches forward towards the gun. Her fingers just lightly touch it before Elliot grabs her wrist. Paige looks at him shocked, he slowly shakes his head. He lets go of her arm and when she looks back Ruby as gone.
Cillian (O.S): Guys.
Everyone looks round to Cillian who’s standing by the window with a pair of binoculars.
Cillian: We’ve got company.
