A bunch of guys get together and decide to commit a robbery. It’s a story that has been done several times before, yet from the original The Italian Job up to Ocean’s Eleven it’s a story that usually manages to remain fresh and fun in the eyes of the average viewer. Ben Affleck’s The Town continues the trend. The film is nothing revolutionary but Affleck takes a well-worn story and is able to add his own skills and artistic qualities to it, creating another compelling film in the heist sub-genre...[more]...

Two years ago, Oscar nominated actor Joaquin Phoenix announced that he was retiring from the industry. This came as something of a shock; Phoenix was only thirty-five at the time and clearly at his peak after giving a brilliant performance as Johnny Cash in Walk the Line. Even more surprising was his reason for quitting the business – to pursue a rap career. After growing both his hair and beard to ridiculous lengths, violently assaulting a fan in public and making a disastrous appearance on David Letterman’s US chat show, Phoenix slowly faded away from the public eye, with most critics and fans dismissing him as a tragically drug addled mad-man who used to have talent...[more]...
Cool list, man. A lot of 2009 films; I didn't have any on my list, I need to let them sink in first. Overall, very interesting, very different. All the usual suspects representing, but then you have such different choices in there, too. Way to go for sticking with your own opinion, even if most people wouldn't agree with you (myself included - The Simpsons movie? Top 20 of the DECADE? Really?)
Haha, I have a soft spot for The Simpsons. I was always gonna like the movie anyway but the fact that it surpassed my expectations only made me love the movie even more. As for having a lot of 2009 films, I suppose it has something to do with them being fresh in my mind. There were many flicks I wanted to rewatch before making the list but I thought I'd do it because most other schmoes have.
I certainly need more foreign flicks and documentaries in my life. :)
Very nice. I haven't seen Tyson or The White Ribbon (yet), but I can say that this is a very interesting and varied list with some pleasant surprises (Serious Man, 500 Days of Summer) alongside the usual, to-be-expected additions (Basterds, Up, Hurt Locker). Very nice! And makes me exciting to see The White Ribbon, that's for sure.
Great list, the only ones I haven't seen are Tyson and Observe and Report, but everything else I've watched and enjoyed.
I wish Jackie Brown had got more Oscar love when it came out, with the exception of Robert Forster's performance.
I don't think IB will win much (other than Waltz), but it's my favorite of the ten nominees. I was hoping for a Laurent nom, guess they didn't want three films at 9 noms apiece.
