Well. Hmph. As the Young Turks note, we the public need more information about just what the hell happened. Obviously, the hatchet hitch-hiker has shown previous violent tendencies; he did so when he saved that woman from an attacker. He manifested also vigilante tendencies. Obviously, a court must decide if the young man was justiced--by the letter of the law or the spirit of the law--when he allegedly committed homicide. If he is even the culprit of the murder.

You wrote "This is all so screwed up." Agreed. How does one untangle this mess accurately (i.e. What are the facts?) and fairly (i.e. How does a court practice justice fair to all parties: the murderer/victim, the murder victim, and society?)?

Kids can be mean little bastards at times but this is crossing soooooo many lines.
