Ugh, the publishers of Alvin Schwartz Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark have replaced Stephen Gammell's awesome illustrations. The original is the on the left and the new one by Brett Helquist is on the right
No disrespect to the other artist...but yeah big fail here...the original artwork set the tone for those stories so much you can't really replace that.
^Brett did the illustrations for A Series of Unfortunate Events books and I didn't know this when I first saw the new ones.
That illustration in particular scared the crap out of me when I was a kid.
The new art looks very Disney.
Glad I've kept my copies of the original books...
Yet another instance of neutering horror for kids. Those illustrations are burned in to my brain forever. So grotesque and brilliant.
