Review-Homeless to Harvard:The Liz Murray Story
Plot:Based on the life of Liz Murray
The cast is marvelous. Thora Birch carries the movie well as Liz Murray; this is one of her most acclaimed roles for a reason. As Liz she was natural and layered. She also provides narration but it works because it’s based off of Liz’s book. Kelly Lynch as her mother was heartbreaking; she definitely had love for Liz but not for herself. The supporting actors are just as solid. There is one part that keeps this from being a 10, she talks directly to the camera towards the end. It would have been better if they had just continued with her narration/voice over.
If you’re looking for fun lighthearted romp of the movie, this isn’t it. This is a straight drama about drug addiction, mental illness, homelessness, child abuse/neglect and poverty. However, this is also an inspiration true story that shows how far determination, strength and intelligence can get you. If given the right opportunities, you can succeed.
It’s on youtube and Liz Murray has a cameo as a social worker.
9/10

I'm so glad you loved this movie. This and Prayers for Bobby, I think are the best films LifeTime has ever created. This was such a great inspiration story that didn't try to sugarcoat how hard life can be. This is the Thora Birch I know and love.
