Juxtaposing Crew-Experience vs. Quality of Product

Picture_1

One of the hardest things about watching the final product of a film/TV episode that you put your blood, sweat and tears into.... is realizing how much you loved your crew but how god awful the film/episode turned out to be. You want to enjoy the product because of the overwhelmingly positive experience you had with your crew and you think about how much of yourself you put into that day's shoot to make that scene possible.... Then you see it on the silver-screen and all you can think is "Does your effort directly correlate with the underwhelming effect of the scene; or, how could they butcher something I did everything in my power to work and be as accessible as possible for the 1stAD!?"

There were days when I was working on LOLA, having the time of my life, the walkie takie banter is at it's most hilarious, we're dancing with the stand-ins, the shots look beautiful, the stunts went off without a hitch, the cast his happy, and hey, we wrapped earlier than expected. Then you watch the episode and you do a double-take... that lil' WTF moment.
And then after a full-season of hard work, you're at the wrap party and everyone is there. We're all so happy and grateful to have spent so much time together and can't wait to get back from the Summer hiatus to continue growing as a family/crew.... then Dick (wolf) steps on to the dance-floor and in brief says "Well... we had a good run."

At the end of the day you have to realize that the part you play is just a small (significant) part in the greater politics that make these shows/features the spectacles that the viewers either love/hate.
I saw the the producers change the ending of LIMITLESS three times. The ending I worked on was not the ending they showed in theaters. It's a hard small realization we as filmmakers have to accept.

I love this industry and I wouldn't dream of doing anything else.

Movie-Viewing Schedule 2011 Edition

**This list will certainly grow & shrink. This list is made up of the definites, not the maybes. Convince me otherwise, if you'd like me to put something on this list.
June 10th- SUPER 8
They’re really pushing the “feel the nostalgia” angle. I don’t want to expect it, i want to feel it.... but I’m okay that George Lucas has no say in the matter.

June 10th The TRIP
Coogan has such a great humor. It's like watching a British version of Woody Allen. This film, as per a viewing of the trailer, seems to have a nice natural feel to it and chalk full of awkwardly hilarious moments.

June 17th- GREEN LANTERN
I’m hoping the extra nine-million dollars spent on the cgi is put to good use, cause the graphics are still very distracting and could hinder the whole experience for me. And now that I've seen Blake Lively in her new NSFW-light... I can't wait for her to put on that green decoder ring.

June 24th- BAD TEACHER
I worked on the film, do you need any other reason.. Oh, it’s also strengthened by a very funny script and a ton of ad-lib.

July 1st- TRANSFORMERS: DofTM
I think Bay learned his mistakes from the sequel.... "Don't write the script yourself"... Damn writer strike! He’s certainly risking a lot by pushing another transformers film down our throats. I’ve heard GREAT reviews from recent screenings though.

July 8th- HORRIBLE BOSSES
The Mis-adventures of Box & Dan.... What? you don't get the reference!?..... Ugh, fine. Going The Distance, Jason & Charlie= GREAT CHEMISTRY

July 15th- HARRY POTTER 7: Part II
I finally enjoyed an HP film (HP7part I). Doby (sp?) is the shit. Still wish they’d take an artistic liberty and bring Gary Oldman back from the dead. I hope Nevel really brings a Bruce Willis like A-Game to the battlefield and gives us one good "yippy kay ya mortherfucker!"

July 22- CAPTAIN AMERICA
I’ll support any film that involves killing nazis. Kinda hoping the INGLORIOUS BASTERDS show up and start scalping heads. I wasn't sure about Cap's fighting technique until the most recent tv spot and if it looks anything like I think it does. Tasty!

July 22- ANOTHER EARTH
Watch the trailer. I wish I wrote this script.

July 29th- COWBOYS & ALIENS
Daniel Craig + any film genre = Of course I’ll watch it. Harrison Ford shot first.

July 29th- THE DEVILS DOUBLE
Dominic Cooper is a great actor and I'm sure we haven't even begun to see his best work. I have a feeling this film will definitely put him on the radar.

August 5th- RISE of the PLANET of the APES
Andy Serkis is being typecast as a monkey. Stop the oppression. His best role was as Cooky (the chef). I like that they're focused more on the science part of the science fiction.

August 12th- 30 MINUTES or LESS
Until you’ve played kickball with Nick Swardson, you won’t understand.

August 19th- CONAN the BARBARIAN
Movies like PATHFINDER make me happy. Stop thinking about Arnold's version and do your Conan mythos research. I have a feeling that this will be a little closer to the source material and that matters to me.

August 26th- OUR IDIOT BROTHER
God damn it!!! Why is Paul Rudd still so under-rated? One of my favorite comedic actors for the past decade. WET HOT AMERICAN SUMMER... anybody?

September 2nd- COLOMBIANA
As anybody should know... I'm a die-hard Besson fan. LÉON is my favorite film of all time. This film reminds me of Matilda, if she grew up as Nikita. I'm personally more excited about Besson's next EPIC space film.

September 9th- WARRIOR
Tom Hardy in the octagon versus Joel Edgerton (watch ANIMAL KINGDOM if you’re not convinced). BRING IT. I saw The Fighter and I loved the hell out of Bale's character, but I'm more excited about the drama between WARRIOR's two brothers.

September 16th- STRAW DOGS
Promise me that you'll watch the original after. Give this one a chance. James Marsden has such a hard time proving to the world that he can act. Give him a chance before you see Dustin own the role.

October 14th- The THING (prequel)
Favorite horror/scifi film of all time plus Joel Edgerton. Wish they were doing a sequel/remake... but whatevs.

October 14th- FOOTLOOSE
Once I heard in Jimmy O's red-carpet interview... that the angry dance is to the tune of Jack White... Got me all kinds of excited.

October 21st- PARANORMAL ACTIVITY
Both films scared the living hell out of me... NEVER watch the first film in your bedroom, while you’re home alone.... bad idea.

October 28th- The RUM DIARY
I’m crazy obsessed with HST, as well as Depp’s interpretation of his late-friend.

November 11th- IMMORTALS
Unless you saw THE FALL (incredible!) in theaters, you don’t deserve to see this film. Even if you’ve never heard of Tarsem.

November 23rd- The MUPPETS
Jason Segal + Muppets = Did you see his vampire musical!?

December 16th- MISSION IMPOSSIBLE 4
Not convinced Renner was the right choice to take Tom’s place. And, whomever thought he’d also be worthy of Bourne’s replacement... is beyond me. Prove me wrong Renner, prove me wrong.

December 16th- SHERLOCK HOLMES 2
I enjoyed the childish banter between Holmes and Watson more than the action sequences and I can’t wait for more mischievous fun between the two.

December 23rd- TINTIN
I love me some mo-cap movies. Looks exciting. Have you seen the roster!? Daniel Craig, Andy Serkis, Simon Pegg, Nick Frost.

I've been looking forward to Another Earth for months and months and months now... it's so close! Hope it's worth the wait.

can't wait for Green Lantern though, should be absolutely fantastic in 3D and I really dig the new effects.

lots of other great ones after that as well!

btw Dark of the Moon comes out June 29th.
