Transformers: Dark of the Moon

Transformers-dark-moon-poster2

Directed by: Michael Bay
Written by: Ehren Kruger
Cast: Shia LaBeouf, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Josh Duhamel, Hugo Weaving, Patrick Dempsey, Ken Jeong, John Malkovich, John Turturro, Frances McDormand, Alan Tudyk, Tyrese Gibson
Studio: Paramount Pictures
Genre: Action, Adventure, Science-Fiction
Official Site: www.transformersmovie.com
Plot: Giant robots fuck shit up in Chicago.

Review:

There is, as I'm sure you've heard, a massive battle sequence at the end of TRANSFORMERS: DARK OF THE MOON that is definitely spectacular, but it's a long, hard road to get to the only part of the film that's remotely interesting on any level...[more]...

It seems to be better then Revenge but I'm awaiting rental so I can fast forward or a free pass.

Being better than Revenge of the Fallen though isn't saying much. Bounching a tennis ball against a wall for 2 and 1/2 hours is more fun than that movie.

Thanks for the review Mike, been hearing almost the same thing, but I didn't know it was 154 minutes, defiently wait for the DVD release.

Paranormal Activity

Paranormal-activity-poster

Directed by: Oren Peli
Written by: Oren Peli
Cast: Katie Featherstone, Micah Sloat
Studio: Paramount Pictures
Genre: Horror
Official Site: www.ParanormalMovie.com
Plot: Spooky shit goes on inside the house of young couple Katie and Micah. He sets up a camera and microphone to try and figure out what's what. We come along for the ride.

Review:

Paranormal Activity is neither as good nor as bad as you've been hearing. The comparisons to BLAIR WITCH are pretty valid as both are handheld horror flicks with slow suspenseful build-ups to a debatable payoff.

There really isn't much SCARY about Paranormal other than a few door slams. It's unsettling at times and spooky at other times but I don't think I jumped until the end of the flick.

The acting is better than I thought it'd be from two relative amateurs and the camerawork isn't nearly as shaky as BLAIR WITCH was (probably because it's on a tripod during the scariest moments).

I was able to see this on a Friday night right before it sold out and while sometimes that's a great time to see a movie, I was extremely annoyed by the crowd so maybe that detracted for me. A bunch of 18-year-old high school kids screaming "BOO!" at the screen, laughing, talking and even a dude who brought his screaming baby. Get the fuck out dude.

I obviously can't blame the movie for that but it's something to think about if you're planning a trip to see it. Beware obnoxious kids.

So it's not the scariest movie in the world, but it's creepy enough and certainly better than THE STEPFATHER or SAW VI.

I saw this film twice to get the full effect and BOTH theaters were packed with rude motherfuckers who forgot to consider the paying audience they were seeing it with.

Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs

2009-cloudy_with_a_chance_of_meatballs-1

Directed by: Chris Miller, Phil Lord
Written by: Chris Miller, Phil Lord
Cast: Bill Hader, Anna Faris, Andy Samberg, Mr. T, Bruce Campbell, Tracy Morgan
Studio: Sony Pictures
Genre: Animated
Official Site: www.cloudywithachanceofmeatballs.com/
Plot: A nerdy scientist attempts to solve his town's problem of bland food by creating a device that turns water into food. But it backfires and soon the town is bombarded with falling food.

Review:

CLOUDY might be a kids movie but it's a lot funnier than you'd expect it to be. It's actually got a comedic sensibility that matches that of its voice stars, Bill Hader, Anna Faris and Andy Samberg. The guys that made this must be big movie geeks cause there are a TON of references to other movies here from TWILIGHT ZONE, ALIENS, INDEPENDENCE DAY and much more. The 3D is put to a much better use here than in most 3D animated movies with confetti and giant rolling donuts all coming right at you.

It's certainly not a better movie than UP but it's certainly a heck of a lot of fun. Much better than MONSTERS VS. ALIENS and were it not for PONYO, it might be my 2nd favorite animated film of the year.

Extract

2009-extract-1

Directed by: Mike Judge
Written by: Mike Judge
Cast: Jason Bateman, Ben Affleck, Mila Kunis, Kristen Wiig, Clifton Collins Jr., JK Simmons
Studio: Miramax
Genre: Comedy
Official Site: www.extract-the-movie.com
Plot: For a comedy it's got an insanely complicated plot but it involves a factory owner (Jason Bateman) who falls for a worker at his plant (Mila Kunis) and hires a gigolo to romance his distant wife (Kristen Wiig) so he won't fee guilty about cheating on her. Meanwhile an employee (Clifton Collins, Jr.) gets injured on the job and his impending lawsuit threatens the sale of the factory.

Review:

While EXTRACT might get funnier with subsequent viewings, it's definitely not hilarious through and through. There are definitely some hilarious parts (Bateman, Ben Affleck and a nutjob smoking weed) but they're spaced out and are filled with parts that may or may not make you chuckle.

Behind all that there's a slightly depressing and misanthropic view of the world where everyone, for the most part, is up to no good. Because this is a comedy, things kinda work out at the end but then you begin to wonder, did they deserve to have all that work out?

Like I said above, there's a lot going on here plotwise and to describe it all for you would essentially ruin the movie. Sometimes it all gets too complicated for its own good and I wished it would've just stuck to about two of the plotlines.

Oh and before I leave, David Koechner is hilarious with an annoying next door neighbor character that is pretty much a cross between Lumberg and Milton from OFFICE SPACE.

Beer League

2006-beer_league-1

Directed by: Frank Sebastiano
Written by: Artie Lange, Frank Sebastiano
Cast: Artie Lange, Ralph Macchio, Laurie Metcalf, Seymour Cassel
Studio: Echo Bridge Entertainment
Genre: Comedy
Official Site: www.beerleaguethemovie.com
Plot: Artie Lange, whose name graces the title and who co-wrote the film with director Frank Sebastiano, stars as, ahem, Artie, a character not unlike the Lange on Howard Stern’s radio show on Sirius. He’s overweight, a drinker, lazy, obsessed with baseball (the Yankees, natch) and playing in a softball league, reliving the glory days with his pals (Ralph Macchio among others). Along the way, they run afoul of the championship team, captained by a real Eye-talian named Dennis. They get into it on the diamond and are told that one of their teams is gonna have to leave the league. In true sports movie fashion, they decide to settle their dispute on the field.

Review:

That flimsy, clichéd plot is really just an excuse for Lange and pals to goof around and tell jokes for 80-some-odd minutes. This is not necessarily a bad thing, especially when the jokes are working (the stripper at the bachelor party and Seymour Cassel’s one-liners are classic), but other times they fall flat and you wish there was a little bit more to fall back on...[more]...
