I saw Maniac yesterday. I've got to say, it was pretty impressive, shocking and disturbing. Great job by Elijah and the score was absolutely terrific! It feels a bit too "artsy" at times, though, and the point of the movie is kind of lost on me. Was it just to evoke these emotions I've mentioned in me?

Dredd 3D

Final-dredd-poster

Directed by: -1
Written by:
Cast:
Studio: Lionsgate
Genre: Action, Science-Fiction
Official Site: www.dreddthemovie.com
Plot: Harry Callahan and Kate Moore are locked in Nakatomi Plaza by that guy from The Raid who for some reason is a chick now.

Review:

Let me start by saying I'm very glad I saw this movie! I don't even mind the extra buck for the 3D (though I'm worried about the trend that leaves me without a choice between 3D and 2D) as it wasn't that bad here. As usual the picture was darker, but not that much that I couldn't see anything, and the extra dimension even added something to the film two or three times. Would I prefer to watch it in 2D? Sure, but if you are to watch a movie with those annoying glasses this movie is the choice to make...[more]...

It looks like ass.

25 years later and the original already owns this. Haven't they learned from Total Recall?!

YoshioKun13
YoshioKun13 at 06:58 PM Sep 15

@LelekPL - Right, I was referring solely to the aesthetics of Rob Bottin's work. It's just about the perfect 'look' you can imagine for the character. Practicality in mobility was obviously not their priority, so now yes thanks to things like IRON MAN it's gotta be redone to satiate today's audience. After all, that's who these movies are being made for now.

By taking that approach, all that great mime work and coaching Weller did to perform in the suit is instantly undermined and thrown by the wayside. Thanks to, ironically enough - technology.

Len Wisemen may deserve a fucking medal after the results of this Paul Verhoeven sci-fi classic are out.

Cochise
Cochise at 09:35 PM Sep 15

Looks fine, don't get the big hooplah at all. Stoked that it's NOT reminiscent of the suit from the original movie.

Watching torture or revenge scenes in movies I'm always surprised why don't they go for the obvious "Cut his dick off!". That shit has to be 100% effective.
Cochise
Cochise at 07:16 PM Sep 14

it only took the Sopranos three episodes to do it.

LelekPL
LelekPL at 07:24 PM Sep 14

yeah, it did happen a couple of times - Planet Terror, I Spit..., etc, but my point was that it pops into my head every single time when they torture someone and DON'T do it in movies. They would save a lot of time cutting straight to the chase.

OK, since I can't find a clear answer - Does anyone know whether there will be an extended cut of Prometheus when it comes out on DVD/Blu?
LelekPL
LelekPL at 06:42 PM Sep 14

That's not a huge bummer, I'm content with the theatrical cut. The extended cut would just be a matter of curiosity for me... that and the fact that Scott makes killer extended cuts. But all in all I really enjoyed what I saw. Much like the also rumored extended cut of Dark Knight Rises, for me, it would only be a matter of knowing what was left out and maaaybe enjoying a slightly better version.

Cochise
Cochise at 06:58 PM Sep 14

^ agreed. I don't need it to be crazy important scenes or anything, I'm happy with just little things that add to other aspects of the movie, that's what I want. Just more of everything, not something drastically different haha.

I hope not. I'd hate to be stuck with a copy to review and have to gauge my eyes out in boredom.

My quick movie round-up

Watched a couple of movies recently:
Expendables 2 - I'm extremely mixed. Everything that I liked about it, started to rub me the wrong way by the end (mainly the humor, by the time Norris showed up my forehead was attached to my palms). Also, some of the actors were great (Arnold, Lundgren), others not really (Stallone, Willis), the jokes were mostly really bad, actions scenes were poorly cut, but what they did in them was still pretty amazing. My favorite part were the two roundhouse kicks by Van Damme and the line he delivers after that was truly badass. All in all, I'd give it a 7/10 for nostalgia's sake.

6 Bullets - this one was a surprise. The first DTV action flick that I liked since Blood and Bone (now why wasn't there a sequel to that movie yet?). And probably for the first time in those movies Van Damme doesn't seem bored. I really didn't like his character in Expendables, there was no reason why we should be afraid of him or for Sly's character, because there was zero build up to what Vilain can do. Here, I liked both the character and the performance. And the guy is still in great shape. The actions scenes are well done, fights are mostly very good, the story is interesting and even though it is low-budgety at times it's a worthwhile movie, maybe even more than the Expendables. 7/10

The Tall Man - I was surprised by how much I liked this movie. It was a surprise how little did I know about it. I think if the reveal had been done later on in the movie, then we might have had a modern classic on our hands, but the switch of tone works pretty good as well and the moral question at the end is pretty intruging, even though the hardship wasn't as fleshed out in the movie, thus making the answer to those questions rather obvious. But still - 7,5/10

Men in Black 3 - I haven't gained anything from this movie. It's definitely better than part 2, it has interesting alien designs and some nice old-school prostetics effects in there as well, but in terms of story and its execution, it's really not that interesting. Not a bad way to spend 1 and a half hour but if you won't see this movie, you're not really missing out on anything special. 6/10

Snow White and the Huntsman - you could probably copy and paste everything what I wrote about MIB3. Adding that it's a story that had been done to death already and some of the scenes in this one were hilarious...ly bad. The motivational speech? Yeah, right honey. 5/10

V/H/S - hmm like most anthology films, this one has some good shorts and some not so good. I'd prefer them being at least somewhat tied up together by the end, but that was not the case, sadly. The acting is mostly average to really bad in all of them, but the ideas are interesting and innovative. I especially liked the forrest killer idea. All in all there were some good and, what's more important, various different scares. But like I said none of them really lifts the flick from a good Tales from the Crypt episode. 7/10 again.

And quickly - The Bachelorette - bad, almost horrible. Not funny, not moving, not difficult, not new and not interesting. 3/10... tops

Grave Encounters - it was okay, I guess, terrible acting, terrible direction and terrible effects, but some scares were effective and I liked the perpetual night idea and the no escape and desperation scenario. My other problem with that one though, and with many modern horrors, is that they give away the ending at the beginning. Don't tell me the people died, I want to root for them, I want them to be okay, then you can kill them or not, but make me guessing and interested. 5/10

Hell fuckin yes to Ali winning Best T&A. I'm gonna be pushing the shit outta that. Don't know if DKR will win Best pic, it stands a good chance but with that, Avengers, Prometheus and possibly Hobbit later in the year this year is wide open.

LelekPL
LelekPL at 01:42 PM Aug 29

Naturally those aren't my predictions, I haven't watched enough movies this year (only 31). They're just films I'd like to win thus far.

But the run for the winner of best movie should be a pretty large geek battle this year. I think Prometheus is out of the race, but TDKR, Avengers and Hobbit all have a good chance. I think Avengers will take the cake though.

I didn't and much like with Planet of the Apes I overwhelmingly prefer the orginal versions. But still I'm quite surprised at how many movies of his I graded high. 8-9 out of 12. For a director who I always thought has lost it since the 90's? That's not a bad record.

As each day passes, I'm liking The Dark Knight Rises more and more. I might give it a 10 after my next viewing. The other reason might be that I haven't seen any other great movies recently... The last two good ones were Bernie and Detention, which were both surprisingly good.

TDKR SPOILERS: So did anyone had a problem with the plot hole regarding the neutron bomb that I mentioned in my review - http://www.moviefancentral.com/lelekpl/reviews/15667. I'm talking about the fact that it could have been detonated at any moment so why did Talia wait so long? I heard people say Bane was bluffing it could have been detonated before the 5 month wait but I don't buy it. Any other ideas?
LelekPL
LelekPL at 05:02 PM Aug 05

that would be... something else :D

Cochise
Cochise at 05:07 PM Aug 05

true true Nite Owl, and I did draw a connection between the stereotypical Bond villain and Bane (and not just the voice). I would've liked that to not have been that case though, to see a more evolved villain (but hey at least we'll see that in the Expendables 2) and personally would've much preferred having Batman's huge recovery and rise be built up and built up and then have it all come crashing down and have it all for nothing as they destroy Gotham just before he can reach the city, I think that would've been amazing, a very cool, ballsy and truly surprising and effective twist that not only would have amplified the movie, but also the villains themselves. But, it is what it is.

Terminal_83
Terminal_83 at 10:41 PM Aug 05

Nite Owl pegged it. I fail to see how it's an actual plot hole.
