The Snyder news is pretty gruesome. That's one of the worst things that can happen to a parent so his decision doesn't surprise me one bit. Completely justified. But the substitution raises interesting questions. Perhaps we might get a look into who the idea maker for this franchise for the future will be. If it's indeed Whedon, I hope they give him a soft reboot to work with, a cleaner slate, no batfleck and cavill baggage.

Dunkirk

Dunkirk-fposter-gallery

Directed by: Christopher Nolan
Written by: Christopher Nolan
Cast: Mark Rylance, Kenneth Branagh, Tom Hardy, Cillian Murphy
Studio: Warner Bros.
Genre: Drama, War
Official Site:
Plot: 400 000 guys have the worst spring break beach party ever

Review:

I'm a bit let down by the movie. The lack of strong characters really hurts the film in my opinion. There was nobody I could have attached myself to emotionaly. I understand it was the intention and in an experimental way it might work in certain scenes that are still quite thrilling without the character connection but I never cared for the ultimate fate of the people on screen in the final minutes of the film. It was more like a chronicle of the historical event that tried to put you inside the carnage. But after half an hour I was looking at my watch. This being Nolan's shortest studio film still felt like the longest to me...[more]...

My 2 cents on the Han Solo fiasco

To quote Angela from The Office: "I think everyone's to blame"

Whatever Lord and Miller have fucked up you can't say Kennedy is without blame. She fired them after 5 months of shooting, not mentioning god knows how many months of pre-production. 5 fucking months! Of course she fucked up royally on this. It screams incompetence.

And it's not the first time a crisis on new SW films occured under her watch. I think Bob Iger should be a little annoyed with Kennedy by now and maybe think about replacing her if shit like this continues. So far her movies have a good track record to say the least - they are darlings with the critics and are doing great at the box-office. But with shaddy things going on behind the scenes I think Disney should take a closer look at LucasFilm's managment.

Like I said, even if the reports that Lord and Miller didn't have a grasp on the character or that they didn't want reshoots were true, they should have ironed this shit out way earlier. I can understand that some flaws might be difficult to see at pre-production stages but after 5 months of shooting? They didn't have dailies but I'm sure the producers have been looking into footage from the film on a regular basis and they have unresolved issues just now! It's good that she tries to correct her previous errors but the question still remains why she keeps making these errors in the first place?

As for the substitute? Ron Howard doesn't really give me much confidence. I haven't liked his film in a LOOOONG time. Some people mention Rush but that's a decent film at best. Frost/Nixon was pretty great but that was almost 10 years ago.

Personally, from the rumored people, I'd have chosen Zemeckis. He hasn't had the best run either recently but all of his films in that same time were decent at worst and Flight was actually really good. Plus, his sensibilities seem to fit SW much better.

On a positive note, I still believe the movie will most likely end up alright. Rogue One had almost the same amount of issues and it worked for the most part. Plus, with Ron Howard at the helm we might get Han Zimmer as the composer of a Star Wars film

My hope is that this latest development demonstrates that Whedon and Snyder's filmmaking sensibilities are not mutually exclusive. Surely Joss knows better than to try and completely pave over the groundwork Zack has already laid.

It's 8 in the morning, the marathon has ended. I loved Prometheus and Alien. Aliens was good but I kept snoozing a little at the end. Covenant however was bad! I'm really disappointed with what they did with the Prometheus cliffhanger. They also didn't manage to give the film the classic slow burn Alien vibe. If you didn't like the characters in Prometheus, I have no words to describe how poorly developed they are here. Prometheus, Alien or Aliens had very memorable characters, in Covenant only Fassbender shines but even his main character is poorly written and with a terrible twist you see miles away!

I'm currently at an Alien Movie Marathon in a local cinema. Just rewatched Prometheus - loved it. I think it's a highly underrated entry in the franchise. Covenant is next. Heard mixed things so expectations are lowered but after that I'm watching the original Alien and later Aliens. I'm really excited to see those two at the cinema for the first time!

I'd go to an ALIEN marathon in a theater for 1-3...
