I really wanted to see a Hobbs spin-off movie after Fast Five... but by now, they've completely botched his character. In Fast 8 he was just absurd. There was no excitment in his action scenes, just ridiculousness. The soccer coach was also cringeworthy. I liked him when he was Tommy Lee Jones with muscles and not this indestructible behemoth with a golden heart. A tough as nails, no nonsense Hobbs is a film I'd much rather see.

Even for the tone of these movies that soccer scene was stupid and lame.

You never know, they might go back to that for the spin-off.

Dear god, Big Little Lies was so addictive and great. I've finished it in two days. The ending is a bit of a letdown since it was a bit obvious since episode 3... and some storylines don't get a proper closure. But other than that, I really loved it. Great acting from everyone, great characters and most drama felt like real drama. That's life - comedy mixed with tragedy

The UNDERWHELMING Last Jedi Trailer thoughts

Sorry but I really don't see anything new and exciting in the Last Jedi trailer compared to Force Awakens. It looks the same, it feels the same, but a little worse since it doesn't have Han Solo, and is very heavy on my least favorite new character - Rey.

There's nothing of Finn and Boyega's comments about him are very disappointing "he'll be trying to find his space... again". I thought that arc ended with the last film very nicely - he stopped running, faced Kylo. I wanted something new for him and his comments make it seem like we're going back to trying to escape the First Order.

There's very little of Poe who SEEMED like the coolest new character but was the most underused in TFA. I was actually really interested in their stories plus the First Order and wanted more about Kylo and Snoke. That's a relationship and training that would be new and fascinating to explore.

Whereas Rey's training does absolutely nothing for me. I've seen it in Empire already, I don't find it that interesting since it's also so very much expected.

The silver lining here is that the first teaser for TFA was also underwhelming but the first trailer made me cry like a child. I hope the first trailer for The Last Jedi will be able to do the same... If they use Leia or Luke with a green lightsaber in action, that might actually happen.

Life

Life-poster-alien-ripoff-big

Directed by: Daniel Espinosa
Written by: Paul Wernick
Cast: Ryan Reynolds, Jake Gyllenhaal, Rebecca Ferguson, Hiroyuki Sanada
Studio:
Genre: Horror, Science-Fiction
Official Site:
Plot: The Blob comes back

Review:

This was REALLY good. I haven't been this scared for a long time. The creature isn't as original as, say the xenomorph, but it is terrifying. Actually, I think the Alien comparisons are kind of wrong. If anything, I'd say that Life is a better 'The Blob' (especially compared to the remake). It's a great B-movie horror that really knows how to turn up the gore but also how to be really tense.

The characters are meh for the most part, sure. Once again, they're dumb scientists, which is a shame. But for some reason the scares were still effective. Nobody really stands out but Reynolds is likable and Gyllenhaal is ok enough for me to care about him. But it's definitely not a character study. Like I said, it's a B-movie horror that is really effective at what it is.

The music was good, the VFX were also good, although in some scenes they were really fake.

LelekPL updated his STATUS: about 1 month ago

I just came back, it's late so I won't write a full review but I have to say, this has been the best film I've seen in almost three years! An easy 9/10. Great acting, themes and story. And I must say, in terms of comic book movies, THIS is what they should be. They should be about something. They should be movies that happen to have so-called superheroes in them and not movies about superheroes. Until today, the three best superhero films of all-time have been TDK, TDKR and Batman Begins, but there's a chance that Logan might jump somewhere between them. It's THAT good. An emotional powerhouse.

Hell yeah with your Ben Foster choice. I have been following that guy since he was in Liberty Heights and Get over it. He is one of my favorite actors. I loved Knight of Cups. I know Malick isn't for everyone and some of his movies are big misses, but I actually really enjoyed that one

My Issue with the Golden Schmoes

Can someone explain to me how:
Sing Street (96% on Rotten Tomatoes)
The Nice Guys (92%)
10 Cloverfield Lane (90%)
Midnight Special (83%)
Swiss Army Man (69%)

are nominated for MOST UNDERRATED? You could make a case for Swiss Army Man, I guess... but c'mon, all of the other films are acclaimed critically and thus highly RATED.

For me, an underrated film this year was for example PASSENGERS (31%). And you don't have to agree with me that it's good, it's just one example, but there is no denying this movie has been poorly RATED and thus, if one likes it is elligable for the nomination. But the movies that have been nominated? They're already rated highly.

If you were to name the category UNDERSEEN or even BEST UNDERPERFORMING MOVIES or HIDDEN GEMS, I would have no issue with it.

But UNDERRATED they are not.

I get where you're coming from. I probably most associate underrated with how well known a film is or how much it's talked about in a positive way compared to how much positive feedback and acknowledgement it actually deserves. Like you said, "Hidden Gems". The one thing I try to remember is to put into perspective how invested we all are into movies. If I asked any of my friends if they knew about any of the five movies listed, maybe one of them would know two or three of them. It just comes down to how people interpret "underrated".

Yeah, I know it's semantics but since people haven't seen them, they cannot RATE them. All the people who have seen them, not only professional critics, RATE them highly. It's a pet peeve but I'm a linguist so it is kind of frustrating.

Plus, I like some original/controversial choices in my awards. If we had Passengers, Suicide Squad or even films I hated like Batman v Superman, Ghostbusters or Knight of Cups, it would be more interesting.

VALENTINE'S PROJECT

I have a request to anyone who's good at drawing around here.

I'm making a mini-book entitled "Alice from Oz" (it's a long story - don't ask ;)

I need 3-4 simple fairy tale book-style pictures to finish it off. Is there anyone who could help me around here?

PLEASE!

I'm not sure what the consensus is around here, but I really enjoyed Passengers. I went into it thinking it's going to be bad, but I was pleasantly surprised.
