I'm not sure what the consensus is around here, but I really enjoyed Passengers. I went into it thinking it's going to be bad, but I was pleasantly surprised.

My Issue with the Golden Schmoes

Can someone explain to me how:
Sing Street (96% on Rotten Tomatoes)
The Nice Guys (92%)
10 Cloverfield Lane (90%)
Midnight Special (83%)
Swiss Army Man (69%)

are nominated for MOST UNDERRATED? You could make a case for Swiss Army Man, I guess... but c'mon, all of the other films are acclaimed critically and thus highly RATED.

For me, an underrated film this year was for example PASSENGERS (31%). And you don't have to agree with me that it's good, it's just one example, but there is no denying this movie has been poorly RATED and thus, if one likes it is elligable for the nomination. But the movies that have been nominated? They're already rated highly.

If you were to name the category UNDERSEEN or even BEST UNDERPERFORMING MOVIES or HIDDEN GEMS, I would have no issue with it.

But UNDERRATED they are not.

I get where you're coming from. I probably most associate underrated with how well known a film is or how much it's talked about in a positive way compared to how much positive feedback and acknowledgement it actually deserves. Like you said, "Hidden Gems". The one thing I try to remember is to put into perspective how invested we all are into movies. If I asked any of my friends if they knew about any of the five movies listed, maybe one of them would know two or three of them. It just comes down to how people interpret "underrated".

Yeah, I know it's semantics but since people haven't seen them, they cannot RATE them. All the people who have seen them, not only professional critics, RATE them highly. It's a pet peeve but I'm a linguist so it is kind of frustrating.

Plus, I like some original/controversial choices in my awards. If we had Passengers, Suicide Squad or even films I hated like Batman v Superman, Ghostbusters or Knight of Cups, it would be more interesting.

VALENTINE'S PROJECT

I have a request to anyone who's good at drawing around here.

I'm making a mini-book entitled "Alice from Oz" (it's a long story - don't ask ;)

I need 3-4 simple fairy tale book-style pictures to finish it off. Is there anyone who could help me around here?

PLEASE!

I need a new comedy TV-show to get hooked on. My favorites thus far have been: The Office, Friends, Fresh Prince and Community. Any suggestions?

Thanks for the suggestions. I have seen Spaced and That 70's Show, the latter being super funny.

I will start Arrested Development next.

Damn good list. I think it's a very comprehensive list for the year. Some I haven't made up my mind yet on but there's a lot there that I'm definitely looking forward to.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story

Rogue-one-a-star-wars-story-dolby-poster

Directed by: Gareth Edwards
Written by: Chris Weitz
Cast: Felicity Jones, Ben Mendelsohn, Diego Luna, Riz Ahmed, Sam Clafin, Mads Mikkelson, Alan Tudyk, Donnie Yen
Studio: Walt Disney
Genre: Action, Adventure, Fantasy, Science-Fiction
Official Site:
Plot: Some small HIGHLIGHTED spoilers in the review, regarding the cameos of certain characters.

Review:

I've just seen it. I'm pretty positive about it overall but definitely not blown away. Although the ending really does bring it close to being amazing. It has a phenomenal third act, which is hard to say about many films. Usually, films tend to dip at the end but not Edwards's. As Godzilla also amazed near the end. The problems lie in the beginning, some editing and pacing issues as well but overall it's a very good action film for this year's standards and a solid film in general. I'd give it a 7/10...[more]...

The new Spider-Man trailer looks pretty meh. Neither the action nor the teenage drama were executed well in the trailer. The action was pretty much not exciting (the infamous Marvel color-grading has a lot to do with it) and the drama felt uninspired. I hope the movie can be better

Yeah, got to agree with that, I'm surprised at all the positivity over it.

Nocturnal Animals - Such a beautiful, yet frustrating movie. There's A LOT to like but much like the story of the book, it leaves you not completely fullfilled. Intentionally or not, this makes it lose a couple of points in my book. Still, it's an overall good movie and a nice sophmore companion piece to A Single Man.

Its weird because the simple Southern thriller with Jake G and Michael Shannon I was 100% riveted by and would totally watch that movie if it was by itself but i sort of can't imagine the movie without Amy Adams omniscient voyeur and how she is carrying the effects of that story around with her.

I wrote this one off when I saw that Tom Ford was the director but I'll have to check this one out at some point. Appreciate the info!

Review:

I loved the ending and the concepts of aliens in this film. What I had problems with is the science. From my understanding the characters are living in modern times and not some dystopian future where every country is at conflict with each other? So it felt really strange to me, as a linguist, to communicate with aliens with many different languages instead of unifying it. Plus they made China into these sort of idiots. China has a far better relationship with the west than in the film now, let alone during an alien visit when uniting is the only logical way of action...[more]...
