Be Cool

2005-be_cool-1

Directed by: F. Gary Gray
Written by: Peter Steinfeld
Cast: John Travolta, Uma Thurman, Vince Vaughn, Cedric the Entertainer, Andre 3000, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, Robert Pastorelli, Christina Milan, Steven Tyler, Harvey Keitel, Danny DeVito
Studio: MGM
Genre: Comedy
Official Site: www.becoolmovie.com
Plot: Chili Palmer is back (with a horrible reddish bad sunburned skin tone), and after a successful producing career in Hollywood, he turns his eye towards the music business. Russians, evil record producers and gay bodyguards try to keep Chili from accomplishing his efforts.

Review:

Don't you hate those sequels that capitalize on what they thought made the original work, and then proceed to repeat these same punchlines - or perhaps unimaginatively turn it a bit on its' head - in hopes that the audience will be too stupid to notice that we're seeing a knock-off of the original? I hate it when they do that, and Be Cool is guilty as charged. I don't want to elaborate too much on what failed with this movie because it would be too long of a list worth reading. Here’s a start...[more]...

Batman Begins

2005-batman_begins-1

Directed by: Christopher Nolan
Written by: David Goyer
Cast: Christian Bale, Michael Caine, Liam Neeson, Katie Holmes, Gary Oldman, Cillian Murphy, Tom Wilkinson, Rutger Hauer, Ken Watanabe, Morgan Freeman
Studio: Warner Bros
Genre: Action, Adventure
Official Site: www.batmanbegins.com
Plot: Driven by the guilt and anger of his parents' murder, the grown up billionare Bruce Wayne becomes Gotham's last hope of the fight against crime... by dressing up as a bat and jumping across rooftops at night.

Review:

Everyone is hoping this will be the jumpstart to a better Batman franchise. Well, to hope this would be better than Batman & Robin should be considered a joke. I'm not laughing. Let's all thank our lucky stars that Chris Nolan has made a cooler Batman than Joel Schumacher! Woohoo...[more]...

Batman

1989-batman-poster1

Directed by: Tim Burton
Written by: Sam Hamm, Warren Skaaren
Cast: Michael Keaton, Jack Nicholson, Kim Basinger, Robert Wuhl
Studio: Warner Bros.
Genre: Action, Adventure
Official Site:
Plot: Driven by the guilt and anger of his parents' murder, the grown up billionare Bruce Wayne is Gotham's Caped Crusader, fighting against crime... by dressing up as a bat and jumping across rooftops at night. Jack Napier falls into a pit of toxic waste and becomes The Joker, so Batman tries to save the day.

Review:

Tim Burton is admittedly not a big fan of the comic scene in general, and he chose to do Batman for more personal reasons than for the fact that he's a fan of the genre. Typically, this is not a good sign, but in the case of this 1989 classic, it turns out quite alright...[more]...

Bad News Bears

2005-bad_news_bears-1

Directed by: Richard Linklater
Written by: Glenn Ficarra, John Requa
Cast: Billy Bob Thornton, Greg Kinnear, Marcia Gay Harden
Studio: Paramount Pictures
Genre: Comedy
Official Site: www.badnewsbearsmovie.com
Plot: A wasted up, alcoholic rat exterminator that used to play for the minors is hired to coach a team of pathetic losers to play baseball. Of course, everyone hates each other, and Buttermaker's in it for the money, so eventually everyone has to go against the odds, and form a kinship with each other to fight against the Yankees, the upper-class rival team.

Review:

Whether or not you're going to find this movie funny is if you're a fan of Billy Bob Thornton. If you thought Bad Santa was friggin' hilarious, then there's a good chance that you'll think this Bad Santa-Lite is a healthy dose of guilty pleasure. I happened to love Bad Santa, and so although this one wasn't close to as funny as that one, Bad News Bears was rude, crude, fairly predictable... but loaded with crass humor and a group of kids who didn't annoy me more than pull off decent performances all around...[more]...

The Aristocrats

2005-aristocrats-1

Directed by: Paul Provenza
Written by:
Cast: Chris Albrecht, Jason Alexander, Hank Azaria, Shelley Berman
Studio: ThinkFilm
Genre: Documentary
Official Site:
Plot: There is a joke that's been around the comedy circuit between comedians for decades now. It starts the same, and has the same punchline. However, everything BETWEEN the open and close of the joke is filled with as much profanity and free-form comedy that can be imagined. It's never told in public, it's actually just a behind-the-scenes bit of fun between other comedians.

Review:

This is an interesting enough documentary. Granted, the first ten minutes tells you all you need to know about the joke, and afterwards all it is is highlights and quotes of endless comedians telling the same joke over and over again. I thought it was kinda funny sometimes, but MOST of the time, I was expecting even MORE imagination from a lot of these 'comic geniuses...[more]...

Aliens

1986-aliens-poster1

Directed by: James Cameron
Written by: James Cameron
Cast: Sigourney Weaver, Michael Biehn, Paul Reiser, Bill Paxton, Lance Henricksen
Studio: Fox
Genre: Science-Fiction
Official Site:
Plot: After being the last survivor of the Nostromo in Alien and destroying the scary and mean alien creature by blowing it out of the God-damn airlock, Ripley is stuck in hyperspace for 57 years and picked up by a salvage team. It turns out that LV-426 has been colonized for terraforming (‘to make the air breathable’). The Company claims that they don’t believe Ripley's story, and she’s left with a shit job and bad dreams to keep her company. Unfortunately, contact with the colony on LV-426 is lost, and Weiland-Yutani becomes nervous and asks Ripley to go down to the planet as an adviser to help some Colonial Marines find out why there are no more messages coming from the colonists. Once Ripley joins the Marines on LV-426, the colony structure seems to be entirely abandoned save for one small girl named Newt who survived by sneaking through the air shafts of the facility. "Survived from what?" you may ask. Do I really need to mention that there are aliens down there wreaking havoc?

Review:

James Cameron is the master of sci-fi action film. He’s thrilled us with the Terminator movies, and he proved that he could make you care for a bunch of pasty underwater divers in The Abyss, but he provided his magnum opus with Aliens...[more]...

Alien

Alien-1980-poster1

Directed by: Ridley Scott
Written by: Dan O'Bannon
Cast: Tom Skerritt, Sigourney Weaver, Veronica Cartwright, Harry Dean Stanton
Studio: Fox
Genre: Sci-Fi, Horror
Official Site:
Plot: It’s the future. A space mining crew on the Nostromo is awoken early out of hypersleep to investigate a strange distress beacon on an unsurveyed planet. They discover a crashed alien ship, and a hive. The hive shoots a strange alien ‘facehugger’ on one of the crew members' faces, and they rush back to the Nostromo and blast off into space before more trouble ensues. In space, no one can hear you scream.

Review:

Unforgettable. Ridley Scott’s imagination comes to nearly full bloom with the unique set design (thank you Micael Seymour), and the stroke of genius involved in hiring H.R. Giger to provide the look of the alien creature(s). When you have the claustrophic, completely immersive surroundings of the Nostromo encapsulating every inch of the screen, and the frightening creature creation that can only come from the mind of H.R. Giger… and then mix in a lot of great actors who work well onscreen together, a killer score by Jerry Goldsmith, an oft-used but seldom (if ever) surpassed story concept, then throw it all together in space – a place that you cannot escape – you can’t help but be completely enthralled by the chemistry that will explode from such a concoction...[more]...

Army of Darkness

1993-army-of-darkness-poster1

Directed by: Sam Raimi
Written by: Sam Raimi, Ivan Raimi
Cast: Bruce Campbell, Embeth Davidtz, Marcus Gilbert, Ian Abercrombie
Studio: Universal
Genre: Horror, Comedy
Official Site:
Plot: After sending the Evil back into the 15th century, Ash is sucked into the vortex as well, and forced to help find the Book of the Dead to ward off the Evil for the kingdom and send himself back to his own time.

Review:

Where the original Evil Dead was about pure horror, and the second installment had its' fair share of humor, this third outing is all about adventure and comedy. Not only that, it manages to be funny and adventuresome without being too stupid to watch! Once again, I am impressed with Raimi's abilities as director, and even MORE impressed than ever with Bruce Campbell as Ash...[more]...

Evil Dead 2

1987-evil-dead-2-poster1

Directed by: Sam Raimi
Written by: Sam Raimi, Scott Spiegel
Cast: Bruce Campbell, Sarah Berry, Ted Raimi
Studio: Rosebud Communications Releasing
Genre: Horror, Comedy
Official Site:
Plot: Part sequel, part remake, Evil Dead 2 has Ash and his girlfriend in the same old cabin, with the same damned book, and a tape that unleashes The Evil. This time around, Ash spends a lot of time with himself in the cabin, slowly going crazy.

Review:

The reason this is not a remake is that the beginning was reshot because they didn't have the rights to the original movie, therefore could not show flashbacks to the original. So this isn't really a remake... it's actually a continuation to the first movie...[more]...

The Evil Dead (1983)

1983-the-evil-dead-poster1

Directed by: Sam Raimi
Written by: Sam Raimi
Cast: Bruce Campbell, Ellen Sandweiss, Richard DeManincor, Betsy Baker
Studio: New Line
Genre: Horror, Comedy
Official Site:
Plot: A group of friends head to an old cabin in the woods to party. They find the Necronomicon - Book of the Dead - and a tape that plays passages from the book, which unleashes the Evil Dead. There is an unseen terror that possesses the cabin members one at a time.

Review:

This is quite the movie for what it is. Made with barely any budget at all ($50,000), Raimi and friends got together to make a horror movie that was unrelenting in gore and horror. Thankfully, Stephen King liked it, and allowed them permission to use his quote in advertising, which led to a very successful cult following, and the rest is history...[more]...

American Psycho

Poster-american-psycho2

Directed by: Mary Harron
Written by: Mary Harron, Roberta Hanley, Guinevere Turner
Cast: Christian Bale, Willem Dafoe, Jared Leto, Josh Lucas, Samantha Mathis, Matt Ross
Studio: Lion's Gate Films
Genre: Thriller
Official Site:
Plot: It’s the late 1980’s, and Patrick Bateman is an upper-class fashion obsessed yuppie businessman. He likes going to the latest restaurants, works out incessantly, parties hard, has a hot girlfriend, likes freaky sex and the latest pop music hits. He’s just like any other upper-class yuppie, except that he also likes to torture and kill people. Well, nobody's perfect!

Review:

When I went and saw this for the first time, my girlfriend and I were the only two laughing. By the time the naked chainsaw wielding scene showed up, I noticed that no one else was laughing, and I looked at everyone around me in the dark theater. It was half-full, consisting mostly of old people and very quiet middle aged participants...[more]...

Return of the Jedi

1983-return-of-the-jedi-poster1

Directed by: Richard Marquand
Written by: Lawrence Kasdan, George Lucas
Cast: Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Billy Dee Williams
Studio: Fox
Genre: Sci-Fi, Fantasy
Official Site:
Plot: The battle between the Alliance and the Empire is now at its’ highest tension level. The Empire has decided to make a NEW Death Star, this one more dangerous and less vulnerable than the last. It’s up to Han Solo and friends to head to Endor to try to deal with a few remote locations where they can disrupt the Empire’s evil plans. Along the way, they come across some furry little creatures called ewoks, who may play more of a role in the galaxy’s fate than one might think. Meanwhile, Luke is a self-proclaimed Jedi Knight, seeking out his mission to rid the galaxy of the evil Darth Vader and the Emperor, while at the same time helping out his best friends in times of need.

Review:

There are a lot of outstanding points to Return of the Jedi that I often overlook the moment I start thinking about those ewoks. To me, the ewoks are a retarded group of little miniature wookies that are a desperate ploy to capitalize on the commercialism of Star Wars merchandise. They are also a vehicle for a lot of silly humor in moments where humor isn’t needed. Looking past that, let’s move on to the things about Return of the Jedi that I did like...[more]...

The Empire Strikes Back

1980-the-empire-strikes-back-poster1

Directed by: Irvin Kershner
Written by: Lawrence Kasdan, Leigh Brackett
Cast: Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Billy Dee Williams, Anthony Daniels, David Prowse, Peter Mayhew, Frank Oz, Alec Guinness
Studio: Fox
Genre: Science-Fiction, Action, Adventure, Fantasy
Official Site: www.starwars.com
Plot: Now that the Rebel Alliance has defeated the Empire’s Death Star, the ultimate planet destroying superweapon, the Empire now takes the offensive and tries to shock and awe the Rebels to submission. Luke Skywalker goes to Dagobah to learn more about using The Force from the Jedi Master Yoda, to become a Jedi like his father. Darth Vader is on a witch hunt for Luke Skywalker, under orders from his master to find Luke to turn him to the Dark Side, because he has an uncanny ability in the ways of The Force, and because of this is a force to be reckoned with. Han Solo and crew are chased by Vader in the search for Luke.

Review:

This, in my opinion, is one of the best movies ever made. The awkward hand that was behind the camera and penning the screenplay of Star Wars took more of a back seat, and George Lucas was smart enough to give the director and screenwriters’ (Leigh Brackett and Lawrence Kasdan) reins over to more capable hands. The mega talent that brought Lucas’ fantastic story treatment to life have created a movie that is rich in character development, high on action, dark and brooding at times, yet still capable of bringing laughs when needed...[more]...

Star Wars

Posternot_available

Directed by: George Lucas
Written by: George Lucas
Cast: Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Anthony Daniels, David Prowse, Peter Mayhew, Frank Oz, Alec Guinness
Studio: Fox
Genre: Action, Science-Fiction
Official Site: www.starwars.com
Plot: A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away, there is a young man by the name of Luke Skywalker who yearns for intergalactic adventure. He finds an adventure when he comes across two droids, one of them carrying a distress signal from a kidnapped princess. Luckily, an old Jedi Master from a war torn past lives near the Skywalker farm, and Obi-Wan Kenobi helps young Skywalker understand his true potential in the ways of The Force (a supernatural power) while trying to rescue princess Leia and stop the evil plans of the Empire.

Review:

This is not your average swashbuckling science-fiction adventure. For 1977, the special effects were a monumental breakthrough to be emulated for years to come. The story itself is fairly basic, but the incorporation of many different sources as obvious as the old Buck Rogers serials and The Phantom Creaps series (the opening scrolling text introduction) to the two droids being a kind of narrator throughout thanks to a nod to Kurosawa’s The Hidden Fortress, it’s a fun time at the movies! Few have NOT seen the first trilogy, and few of those people did not enjoy it at some level. I grew up with the Star Wars movies, so my heart will always be firmly fixed to the wide-eyed enthusiasm of a young boy immersed in the fantastic realm of this simple yet wonderful film...[more]...

So, that's it then, right? This is the end of the series? The completed Star Wars saga? Who knows what Lucas has up his sleeve after the 3-d theatrical re-release of the originals in a couple years, eh...[more]...
