The Devil's Rejects

2005-devils_rejects-1

Directed by: Rob Zombie
Written by: Rob Zombie
Cast: Bill Moseley, Sid Haig, Sheri Moon, Karen Black, William Forsythe, Irwin Keyes, Robert Allen Mukes, Priscilla Barnes, Danny Trejo
Studio: Lions Gate Films
Genre: Horror
Official Site: www.thedevilsrejects.com
Plot: The police raid the Firefly house, and some of the family escapes and go on yet more murderous rampages, endless banter, and more music video-styled stylization.

Review:

Did you like House of a Thousand Corpses? Well, then, you'll like this one, too. I fucking HATED H1kC, and so I figured I'd give Rob Zombie one more shot at directorial redemption. Both of these movies are one of those "love it" or "hate it" flicks...[more]...

Derailed

2005-derailed-1

Directed by: Mikael Hfstrm
Written by: Stuart Beattie
Cast: Jennifer Aniston, Clive Owen, Vincent Cassel, Melissa George, RZA, Xzibit
Studio: The Weinstein Company
Genre: Thriller
Official Site:
Plot: Charles and Lucinda are both married - but not to each other - and have a chance meeting on a train when Charles misses his usual departure time. They go to a hotel to get it on, but get more than they bargained for when they're robbed. After that, the robber(s) just won't leave him alone, and want more money, and more and more...

Review:

This is one of those predictable thrillers that tries to be clever but fails miserably. You know, like so many others before it? I like Clive Owen a lot, and it was interesting to see him make a departure from, say, King Arthur and/or Closer where he's the dominant type. For Derailed, he spends most of his time being scared and submissive. I appreciate his departure from the usual, because it shows that he's not afraid to do something different for a movie than what's expected. As for Jennifer Aniston, well, she didn't impress me much. I don't care much for her as it is, but she was good in Office Space, and she doesn't annoy me. She just isn't all that great, either...[more]...

Dead Alive

1993-dead-alive-poster1

Directed by: Stephen Sinclair
Written by: Peter Jackson, Stephen Sinclair
Cast: Timothy Balme, Diana Pealver, Elizabeth Moody, Ian Watkin
Studio: Trimark
Genre: Comedy, Fantasy, Horror
Official Site:
Plot: Before Hobbitts and Elves took over the silver screen with Lord of the Rings by the hand of genius director Peter Jackson, several small little horror films coined as "Splatterflicks" were formed by a younger PJ back in the late 80's to early 90's. Dead Alive is about a young man, Lionel Cosgrove, who needs to support his mother's sickness accrued by the viscious bite of a rare Sumatra Rat Monkey at the local zoo. Little does he know that a bite from one of these monkies causes the victim to turn into one of the living dead. Poor Lionel has to deal with a newfound romance and his mother's slow delapitation, and soon finds himself in over his head (in gore) with the accelerating advancement of this contagious curse. Soon, his basement overfills with zombies, and eventually half the town seems to become infected with zombieism. What is poor little antisocial momma's boy Lionel to do?

Review:

Known as Dead Alive to Americans and Brain Dead to the rest of the world, this is Peter Jackson before he got critical accolades up the ass for Heavenly Creatures (1994), which is probably what led Newline Cinema into allowing PJ to make the three-billion-dollar worldwide box office juggernaut Lord of the Rings trilogy. Or perhaps someone high up in authority thought that PJ had the chops even BEFORE The Frighteners (1996) or the aforementioned Heavenly Creatures and understood the genius of this man's vision from his Splatterflicks... who knows for sure, eh...[more]...

Dark Water

2005-dark_water-1

Directed by: Walter Salles
Written by: Rafael Yglesias
Cast: Jennifer Connelly, Ariel Gade, Shelley Duvall, Perla Haney-Jardine, Camryn Manheim, Pete Postlethwaite, John C. Reilly, Tim Roth, Dougray Scott
Studio: Walt Disney
Genre: Thriller
Official Site: www.darkwatermovie.com
Plot: Hey, look! It's [b]The Ring[/b], but less scary and more stupid! In an apartment!

Review:

Jesus, man. Don't be a fool like me and think that Jennifer Connelly is smart enough to not star in a piece of shit horror movie. This manages to make a painful recreation of The Ring, and not only that, it's a remake of an already retreaded Japanese version. How much more sad can things get? This manages to follow almost every single cliche in the book, minus one twist in the end that many might not see coming. However, it also made another ending to the added ending from what you might think would be the original ending (that's three endings, I mean). The third ending manages to try for one more really cheap scare that doesn't work at all, and ends shit on such a retarded note that I almost think Contact was a good ending. But no, that ending still sucks, too...[more]...

Corpse Bride

2005-corpse_bride-1

Directed by: Tim Burton, Mike Johnson
Written by: Pamela Pettler, Caroline Thompson
Cast: Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter, Emily Watson, Albert Finney, Richard E. Grant, Joanna Lumley, Christopher Lee
Studio: Warner Bros
Genre: Animation
Official Site: www.corpsebridemovie.com
Plot: Victor is betrothed to Victoria, whom he has never met. On rehearsal day, he gets extremely nervous and runs off into the the forest. Recounting his lines for the vows, he accidentally marries a dead woman. The Corpse Bride!

Review:

Tim Burton has returned to a kind of filmmaking artistry that works better for him than say The Planet of the Apes with the wonderfully animated feature The Corpse Bride. It's a given to say that if you loved The Nightmare Before Christmas, there's little chance of not liking this one as well. I thought Christmas was alright, but totally dig the look and feel of the animation. I had a better time with this one than the previous, and so I'm happy to have seen it in the theaters...[more]...

The Constant Gardener

2005-constant_gardener-1

Directed by: Fernando Meirelles
Written by: Jeffrey Caine
Cast: Ralph Fiennes, Rachel Weisz, Pernilla August, Danny Huston, Hubert Kounde
Studio: Focus Features
Genre: Thriller
Official Site: www.theconstantgardener.com
Plot: A British diplomat's wife is murdered, and the constantly gardening husband goes in search for clues leading to her death.

Review:

From the director of the solid first effort City of God comes a preachy, boring, uninspirational story about evil drug companies and the atrocities that we should all worry about in Africa. Everyone knows that this shit goes on in Africa, and it is a terrible thing. We're reminded at least three times about "the way things are," about the (what the storytellers want you to consider) twisted morality of those who so heartlessly do drug testing on the poor villagers in Africa, which are the typical big-time questions: the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few. Why save this one life, when there are many thousands others like this? That's the way of the world, yadda yadda yadda...[more]...

Constantine

2005-constantine-1

Directed by: Francis Lawrence
Written by: Kevin Brodbin, Frank Cappello
Cast: Keanu Reeves, Rachel Weisz, Shia LeBeouf, Tilda Swinton, Pruitt Taylor Vince, Djimon Hounsou, Gavin Rossdale, Peter Stormare
Studio: Warner Bros
Genre: Thriller
Official Site: www.constantinemovie.com
Plot: John Constantine is cursed. He can see hybrids; half-demons and half-angels roaming the earth in the form of humans. They take human form, and try to influence humans into making decisions for the Devil, or for God. John is further cursed with a terminal case of lung cancer. He never stops smoking and likes to drink. When he's not doing these two favorite hobbies, he's helping to send the demon hybrids back to hell, and at the same time try to redeem himself a place in Heaven. Demons have recently been breaking into the world of the living, which is a big no-no in the supernatural play book. Detective Angela Dodson's sister Isabel jumps off of a building, and she believes it wasn't suicide. She finds her way to Constantine to help discover the reason behind Isabel's death.

Review:

First off, let's get the whole 'Keanu Reeves Can't Act For Shit' bit out of the way. He pulls no standout performance like he did in The Gift, and instead plays himself but with a different name... as usual. Hey, that's fine with me. He doesn't perticularly ruin a movie for me. In fact, I've liked quite a few movies he's been in. The role of John Constantine isn't a very demanding one, and so he doesn't really make or break the movie for me...[more]...

Collateral

2004-collateral-1

Directed by: Michael Mann
Written by: Stuart Beattie, Frank Darabont, Michael Mann
Cast: Tom Cruise, Jamie Foxx, Jada Pinkett Smith, Mark Ruffalo, Peter Berg, Bruce McGill
Studio: Dreamworks
Genre: Thriller
Official Site: www.collateral-themovie.com
Plot: Max (Brian Foxx) has been a temp cab driver for 12 years. Working the late shift one night, a well dressed gray haired man who looks a lot like Tom Cruise (because it is) named Vincent offers him $500 to take him to 5 different locations for the night. Seems like a fair enough deal, until he soon realizes that this guy is no normal guy in a suit; he’s a hitman out to seal the deal on 5 hits! It sure looks like Max is in for a bad night, doesn’t it?

Review:

It seems that every time Michael Mann has a new movie coming out, I’m excited. It doesn’t always mean that I’m going to like it. For the most part, I do. When I first got word of a Michael Mann film with Cruise and Foxx, I didn’t know what to think. I thought the premise was pretty cool, and then I saw the poster and loved how subdued it was. It was just a side photo of Tom Cruise in his gray suit with a silenced pistol in his lap, with the title in small letters at the top. For some reason, this poster said to me, “This is a drama. This is a slower movie that will only work if the script and the actors are top-notch.”...[more]...

Chicken Little

Cast: Zach Braff, Joan Cusack, Katie Finneran, Don Knotts, Garry Marshall, Amy Sedaris, Steve Zahn
Studio: Walt Disney
Genre: Animation
Official Site: www.disney.com/chickenlittle/
Plot: Chicken Little rings the town emergency panic bell when a piece of sky falls on him. On the way back to the piece of sky, it disappears and the town ridicules him for the false alarm. Not much else happens that's of noting until the last 15 minutes, which even THEN is barely worth mentioning.

The Cave

Directed by: Bruce Hunt
Written by: Michael Steinberg, Tegan West
Cast: Cole Hauser, Morris Chestnut, Eddie Cibrian, Daniel Dae Kim, Rick Ravanello
Studio: Sony/Columbia
Genre: Horror
Official Site: www.sonypictures.com/movies/thecave/
Plot: There's a secret cave hidden under a church more than 90 miles long and over 2 miles deep. A team of cave dwellers - the best in the world, of course - go under to check it all out. But there are winged demon creatures that want to kill them down there!

Review:

Uh... first thing's first - what are you going to expect from this? It's a PG-13 thriller that mixes The Abyss, Leviathon, Pitch Black and Vertical Limit into one generic, time-wasting package of distracting entertainment that requires you to leave your brain at the door. It lacks even the small amount of brains in Pitch Black, and has enough of the cheese of the other flicks while trying desperately to looks as good as The Abyss (but failing). Since I knew what to expect, I wasn't all that disappointed. It delivered enough entertainment to keep me going...[more]...

Studio: Dreamworks
Genre: Sci-Fi

Plot: This is a not-so-complicated story, but there's a lot of explanation required. To sum it up in a nutshell: In the future, one man strives to save humanity from a new super human race known as Neo-Sapiens.

Review:

Capote

Capote-poster

Directed by: Bennett Miller
Written by: Dan Futterman
Cast: Philip Seymour Hoffman, Catherine Keener, Cliffton Collins Jr., Bruce Greenwood, Chris Cooper, Bob Balaban, Mark Pellegrino
Studio: MGM/UA
Genre: Biography, Drama
Official Site: www.capote-movie.com
Plot: Based on the true events of Truman Capote's quest to create a non-fiction novel about two murderers on death row. Mr. Capote himself is a quirky guy with the way he talks and his lifestyle. Eventually, he and one of the convicted murderers become friends, which makes writing the novel that much more difficult of a task.

Review:

The story of Truman Capote writing In Cold Blood on its' own has a lot of potential to create the Oscar bait melodrama that I hate so much. There are so few movies at this time of year which truly impress me. Few Oscar-wannabe dramas succeed in avoiding the sappy and cheap attempts at tugging at the viewers' heartstrings through the use of swelling music on cue, shitty flashbacks and onscreen tears when needed. There are other movies that are just "alright" but worth watching for an actors' performance IN the movie, such as Ray...[more]...

The Brothers Grimm

2005-brothers_grimm-1

Directed by: Terry Gilliam
Written by: Ehren Kruger
Cast: Matt Damon, Heath Ledger, Monica Bellucci, Jonathan Pryce, Lena Headey, Peter Stormare, Mackenzie Crook, Richard Ridings
Studio: Dimension Films
Genre: Action, Fantasy
Official Site: www.miramax.com/thebrothersgrimm/
Plot: Faerie tales come true for the Brothers Grimm, who spend their lives conning small villages, chasing fake ghosts and creatures that they 'fight off'. They end up in one village trying to find out why some small children are being kidnapped, and who's behind the con. But of course, this time the enchantments are REAL.

Review:

I've been waiting for over a year and a half for this damned movie to get released. Gilliam has always had a bastard of a time with the studios for every movie he's made. He wants his vision the way he likes it (which is genius), while the studios wish for his results to be more mainstream and audience friendly...[more]...

Directed by: Ang Lee
Written by: Larry McMurtry, Diana Ossana
Cast: Jake Gyllenhaal, Heath Ledger, Linda Cardellini, Anna Faris, Anne Hathaway, Randy Quaid, Michelle Williams
Studio: Focus Features
Genre: Drama
Official Site: www.brokebackmountain.com
Plot: Two cowboys watch over a flock of sheep in 1963, and even though they aren't 'gay', they become lovers. Over several years, the pain of their love for one another and the secret to their own wives and kids becomes harder to deal with.

Review:

Upon seeing the previews, I didn't know what to think of this movie going in. I don't mind a movie about gay lovers, that's fine. What I didn't dig were some of the setups cinematically that looked like it was screaming for Oscar (such as the fireworks at night, or some carefully framed two-shots). Add to that the horrible quote, "I wish I knew how to quit you!" which I had only hoped was taken out of the proper context of the emotional value of that scene...[more]...
