Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

2005-harry_potter_and_the_goblet_of_fire-1

Directed by: Mike Newell
Written by: Steven Kloves
Cast: Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, Rupert Grint, Robbie Coltrane, Michael Gambon, Alan Rickman, Maggie Smith
Studio: Warner Bros
Genre: Fantasy
Official Site: www.gobletoffire.com
Plot: Harry, Hermione and Ron are BACK, and this time there's a Tri-Wizard Tournament, where three different magical schools have students compete in three trials for eternal glory. This time around, the adults consider the danger as too high for anyone under 17 years old, but poor 14 year old Potter has been magically (hehe) chosen for reasons he's not yet aware. There's a new Dark Arts teacher. Plus, Voldemort wants to come back from the dead, of course. *sigh*

Review:

It's funny, because this time around, there's a tournament that seems to encompass the entire school year, and none of the students study, they just prepare for the cheers to be had, and make friends with the students from the other schools. What's also odd is that if it's every three years (since one of the students says "We always have three years from now")... what happened to Harry's first year Tournament? Was there one? Bah! No bother! It's a FANTASY TALE, why worry about reality, right?! On top of that, it might have been during school break or something. I really don't know...[more]...

Good Night, and Good Luck

2005-good_night_and_good_luck-1

Directed by: George Clooney
Written by: George Clooney, Grant Heslov
Cast: David Strathairn, Robert Downey Jr., George Clooney, Frank Langella, Ray Wise, Patricia Clarkson, Jeff Daniels
Studio: Warner Independent Pictures
Genre: Biography, Drama
Official Site: www.goodnightandgoodluck.com
Plot: Based on the true events of Edward Murrow on CNN confronting the witch hunt-like accusations of Senator McCarthy wrongfully incriminating people of being Communists. Controversy ensues, and McCarthy clashes horns with Murrow by accusing anyone and everyone on the station of contributing to the Communist party in hopes that he can debunk the show's accusations.

Review:

The first problem I had watching this was that the audience was extremely pretentious. Every time there was the obvious punchline to a joke, you could tell many people didn't know what the hell the actors were really referring to (a lot of 50's pop culture), yet knew that it was a joke, so they laughed as if they were in on it, too. There were also a number of times when the audience would make a retarded gasp or applaude for the wrong reasons. Maybe this helped me not enjoy the movie so much...[more]...

Memoirs of a Geisha

2005-memoirs_of_a_geisha-1

Directed by: Rob Marshall
Written by: Akiva Goldsman, Ron Bass, Robin Swicord
Cast: Zhang Ziyi, Ken Wantanbe, Gong Li, Michelle Yeoh, Yuki Kudo, Koji Yakusho, Karl Yune, Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa
Studio: Sony/Columbia
Genre: Drama
Official Site: www.memoirsofageisha.com
Plot: A young Japanese girl with strikingly beautiful eyes is taken from her poor fishing village to be raised as a geisha. During tumultuous times and key historical events in Japan's history, she eventually becomes one of the most famous geisha of all time. This is her story as told to an interviewer during her old age.

Review:

Memoirs of a Geisha is one of the best books I've ever read. Rob Marshall has a great directorial eye. Just watch Chicago and tell me it doesn't LOOK wonderful. There are a few problems with this movie before you even see it. First, the book is extremely intricate in detail and storytelling. It would be very difficult to translate onscreen and still evoke the same emotions that one gets while reading it. Second, this movie hires CHINESE ACTORS to play not just Japanese characters in a Japanese story... but they are the FUCKING LEADS! This is absolute bullshit, and a major strike goes to the makers for this bad, name-dropping-for-the-box-office-receipts faux-pas. Already, it seems this movie is doomed...[more]...

The Frighteners

1996-the-frighteners-poster1

Directed by: Peter Jackson
Written by: Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh
Cast: Michael J. Fox, Jake Busey, R. Lee Ermey, John Astin, Peter Dobson, Jeffrey Combs
Studio: Universal
Genre: Comedy, Horror, Fantasy
Official Site:
Plot: Frank Bannister is a real psychic who uses his two ghost friends to con home owners into believing their houses are possessed by evil spirits. After a series of mysteriuos deaths, it's up to Fox to try to solve the mystery behind the supernatural Grim Reaper-like demon murderer.

Review:

Leave it to New Line Cinema to fuck up promotion for a great horror comedy adventure. This is an extremely well done horror movie that gave us a new perspective on Peter Jackson's movie-making style. Before this, he did such classics as Bad Taste, Dead Alive and Meet the Feebles. They were extremely low budget, and the gore was high as the budget was low...[more]...

The Fog

2005-fog-1

Directed by: Rupert Wainwright
Written by: Cooper Layne
Cast: Tom Welling, Maggie Grace, Rade Sherbedgia, Selma Blair
Studio: Sony/Columbia
Genre: Thriller
Official Site: www.escapethefog.com
Plot: In a small town off the coast of Oregon, terrible things happened in the past. The main characters are all direct relatives to the founders of the town (we know this because the movie tells us for no apparent reason within the first four minutes). Nick Castle (great name, huh?) stirs up some shit on the ocean floor, and then ghosts start showing up in the fog during the night. The token black guy freaks out, and of course is the only survivor of the first night's invasion to have experienced it firsthand. Oh, and there's a little boy in it, too, who speaks some words of wisdom about what the ghosts want, but no parents are around to hear it.

Review:

I knew this movie was pretty much going to suck. What I didn't know was that it was going to suck this much! I would laugh if it wasn't for the fact that movies like this should never be made, and they typically make their money back, which warrants more movies just like it. I'm a fool, and I watch them anyways, but there are times when I'm pleasantly surprised, which is why I go and see them with low expectations...[more]...

Flightplan

2005-flightplan-1

Directed by: Robert Schwentke
Written by: Peter A. Dowling, Billy Ray
Cast: Jodie Foster, Peter Sarsgaard, Sean Bean, Erika Christensen
Studio: Walt Disney
Genre: Thriller
Official Site: flightplan.movies.go.com
Plot: Kyle (that's a girl) and her daughter head on a flight in the newest plane from Germany to New York. Kyle helped build the engine for the plane. Her daughter disappears in-flight, and no one remembers her being on board. Is she crazy? Of course not! We have to find her daughter!!

Review:

Flightplan is what it is; a typical, uninspiring, wannabe thriller that brings few thrills and nothing new to this kind of movie. She has to find her daughter, yadda yadda yadda. Peter Sarsgard does his Peter Sarsgard thing. Sorry if that seems to bring a spoiler, but I'm trying to leave it kinda cryptic. No I'm not. I might have spoiled some of the movie for you. The actual plane itself is overbloated in largeness, and there are people on board that are in every movie like this; the complaining asshole guy, the questionable flight attendants that possibly know something about her missing daughter but just not talking. Does the Captain know what's going on? Who knows? Who cares? I sure didn't...[more]...

Finding Neverland

2004-finding_neverland-1

Directed by: Marc Forster
Written by: David Magee
Cast: Johnny Depp, Kate Winslet, Julie Christie, Radha Mitchell, Dustin Hoffman
Studio: Miramax
Genre: Biography, Drama
Official Site: www.miramax.com/findingneverland/
Plot: Sir James Matthew Barrie is a playwright whose last couple plays have gotten lukewarm reception compared to his older work. While writing notes at a park, he happens to come across the Davies family, whereupon he spends every day with them, taking the family on several adventures of the imagination. While spending time with the young boys, he also finds inspiration for Peter Pan, the story of a boy who never grows old. Once again the month of December 2004 brings yet another biopic that is released just in time to make Oscar notice.

Review:

After the opening credits, the final line says 'Inspired by True Events'. I don't know exactly what's true and what's not about this guy's life. I know exactly 'Jack' and 'Shit' about the real life of Mr. Barrie, so I can't make comparisons. It's really unimportant knowing what's real and what isn't about his life, as long as the movie itself is entertaining. That's my opinion, at least. I could care less if the existence - let alone the historical accuracy - of William Wallace is true and the events that occur in Braveheart are correct, because in the end I was completely entertained. As a film medium, I don't mind the moviemakers taking liberties to someone's actual life if it helps propel the story to a higher level of viewing enjoyment...[more]...

Written by: Steve Adams
Cast: Ben Stiller, Jack Black, Christopher Walken, Rachel Weisz, Amy Poehler
Studio: Dreamworks
Genre: Comedy
Official Site: www.dreamworks.com/envy/
Plot: Two best friends work together. Tim is the uptight neurotic dude (big stretch, huh?) and Nick is the one who is freeloving and lacks 'focus' (woah). Tim comes up with the idea of making 'Vapoorizer', which makes dog shit disappear. Nick becomes jealous, and hilarious highjinks ensue. I wish you could spray the shit remover on this movie.

The Exorcism of Emily Rose

2005-exorcism_of_emily_rose-1

Directed by: Scott Derrickson
Written by: Scott Derrickson, Paul Harris Boardman
Cast: Laura Linney, Shohreh Aghdashloo, Jennifer Carpenter, Campbell Scott, Tom Wilkinson
Studio: Sony/Columbia
Genre: Horror
Official Site: www.sonypictures.com/movies/theexorcismofemilyrose/
Plot: Emily Rose is a normal, small town family girl (of course). Once she enters college on a scholarship, she starts to become possessed by demons. Either that, or she's got a bad case of epilepsy and psychotic episodes. This courtroom drama, based off of the true story, tries to give two sides of the coin on this case: faith versus science.

Review:

Well, slap me silly and fuck me gently with a chainsaw, but I really liked this movie! This is not at all what I was expecting. I was thinking this would be a C+ venture at best, but more into the lower realms of watchability. By no means is The Exorcism of Emily Rose a perfect movie, but it works more often than it doesn't, and I was very entertained throughout. This is more a courtroom drama than it is a horror/supernatural thriller, so don't expect huge scares when going to see it. There are a number of standard shocks throughout, but having seen the preview, one would expect a horror movie first and foremost. Thankfully, it didn't go that route, and this works on the film's behalf...[more]...

Elizabethtown

2005-elizabethtown-1

Directed by: Cameron Crowe
Written by: Cameron Crowe
Cast: Kirsten Dunst, Orlando Bloom, Susan Sarandon, Judy Greer, Jessica Biel
Studio: Paramount Pictures
Genre: Comedy, Romance
Official Site: www.elizabethtown.com
Plot: Shoe designer Drew Baylor just lost the company nearly $1 billion for his failed shoe design. That same night, he gets news of his father passing away. On the flight to his hometown, he meets a chipper young flight attendant who he eventually makes a connection with.

Review:

For Cameron Crowe to fill his own shoes, it's quite a task. It's hard to top classics such as Almost Famous, Jerry Maguire (minus the stupid ass Lipkin shitting all over every scene with retarded cuteness) and Say Anything. This time he's back with another relationship movie about a woman who's wise with the world and always chipper, much like Kate Hudson in Almost Famous, but not as convincing or charming. Bloom is much like poor Jerry Maguire - just out of a high paying job and looking to find ways to pick up the pieces, but instead of finding a woman and child, he finds his alienated family...[more]...

Review:

Well, first thing's first. If you're not a fan of Scott or Knoxville, and are looking for something more than just brainless car stunts and these two guys' mugs trying for laughs, DON'T see this movie! Give it an "F", and move on with your life. Everyone else... buckle up...[more]...

Studio: Universal
Genre: Action

Plot: A group of Marines go to investigate a distress beacon from a distant planet. Once there, they realize they are up against zombies, and other scary creatures that go bump in the dark corridors.

Review:

Oh Jesus, man. I don't know why I do this to myself sometimes... the way I go to movies I know I won't like. The thing is, there are those fleeting moments where I catch a real gem of a flick, and those are when all other bad movies that I've seen are made up for with the entertainment from those surprises (which is why I'm often sad about not seeing The Others). This is not one of those movies...[more]...
