Land of the Dead

2005-land_of_the_dead-1

Directed by: George A. Romero
Written by: George A. Romero
Cast: Simon Baker, John Leguizamo, Dennis Hopper, Asia Argento, Robert Joy
Studio: Universal
Genre: Horror
Official Site: www.landofthedeadmovie.net
Plot: The remaining survivors of the zombie invasion have taken themselves into hiding into a small section of the big city, heading out at night in militaristic fashion to gather supplies, using fireworks as a deterrent. All goes to hell when the zombies start to use tools and learn how to be more human. Thanks to one gas station worker, who likes to imitate the Frankenstein Vader yell.

Review:

Finally, Mr. Romero has been able to bring the next installment of his zombie series to the big screen. Just as the zombies themselves have reached new heights of intelligence, so has this film series made large advancements in special effects, and been an influence for the horror genre in general. Night of the Living Dead is a classic in its' own right due to the fact that it is a gritty, gruesome low budget horror movie with an unlikely hero (a black man) during the time of release, with a kickass ending. Dawn of the Dead was a masterful display of gore effects thanks to Tom Savini, who has since then become a legendary makeup effects artist in his own right. Day of the Dead is cheesy and pretty retarded for the most part, but that's some of the movie's charm... and the gore level - WHEW! Great stuff...[more]...

Sympathy for Lady Vengeance

2006-sympathy_for_lady_vengeance-1

Directed by: Chan-wook Park
Written by: Chan-wook Park, Seo-Gyeong Jeong
Cast: Yeong-ae Lee, Min-sik Choi
Studio: Palisades Tartan
Genre: Thriller, Crime
Official Site:
Plot: After 13 years of imprisonment for the murder of a boy which she didn't commit, beautiful Lee Geum-Ja orchestrates a twisted plan of vengeance on the person that took away the most youthful years of her life.

Review:

This being the third and final of Park's Vengeance trilogy, it's definetely a decent bookend to a rather good series. Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance was slow moving, competant, but overall a let-down for me. I found Oldboy to be one hell of a slick, stylish and classy watch, but the conclusion went a tad overboard with the shock attempts (the tongue thing was really stupid). The class of Oldboy stays strong in Lady Vengeance, with plenty of well-framed camera setups, a heavy dose of primary colors (especially green, red and blue), and Park's wry sense of humor sparks some laughs at the strangest times. I dig a lot of the jokes that came during distressed moments, such as the dodgeball in prison scene, or when she cuts her finger off and the dude is sweeping the blood with a broom. That's FUNNY...[more]...

Review:

I love the first scene in the movie. It is so totally fucked up! After that great opening, I couldn't help but hope for some more fucked up moments, and I got'em! This is an hilarious dark comedy that isn't afraid to make messed up decisions just for the laughs. Plus, it's an interesting murder mystery intermingled with even MORE interesting characters...[more]...

The Jacket

2005-jacket-1

He is a witness to a cop killing, get's blamed for it and ends up in a loony bin, since there's no evidence of him meeting the people he described in court. He's given a radical form of 'treatment' while in the hospital, and things then start to attempt to get really confusing, with Jack in the jacket jumping between time and trying to figure out what's real... and whether or not he's crazy.

Review:

I know this movie wants to be clever, and it tries to be as much of a mindfuck as its' competitors The Butterfly Effect, 12 Monkeys, or a slew of other movies with the same kind of concept. I was bored...[more]...

The Interpreter

2005-interpreter-1

Directed by: Sydney Pollack
Written by: Charles Randolph, Scott Frank
Cast: Nicole Kidman, Sean Penn, Catherine Keener
Studio: Universal
Genre: Thriller
Official Site: www.theinterpretermovie.com
Plot: Silvia Broome is an Uber-Interpreter, seemingly capable of understanding every language in the world. She works for the United Nations, and one night after the building is evacuated, she goes back for her flute bag (it's exactly what you think), and overhears something that she shouldn't have heard on a pair of headphones. She thinks she's been seen by the mysterious voices and fears for her life. Secret Service agent Tobin Keller comes to investigate. He believes in peoples' FACES, and not their WORDS like Silvia. Is she lying? Is she hiding something? Can they fall in love?

Review:

Good old Sydney Pollack. Can I call him Polly? I think I will. Polly's been around for quite a while, and I think his best movie was Tootsie, and by far the worst of his that I've seen was Out of Africa - aka - A Cure for the Insomniac...[more]...

The Island

2005-island-1

Directed by: Michael Bay
Written by: Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci, Caspian Tredwell-Owen
Cast: Ewan McGregor, Scarlett Johansson, Djimon Hounsou, Steven Buscemi, Michael Clarke Duncan
Studio: Dreamworks
Genre: Science-Fiction
Official Site: www.theisland-themovie.com
Plot: It's the future, and the world has been contaminated with a killer virus. Everyone lives in a huge building, and a lottery allows people to go to The Island... the sole remaining place of tranquility left on earth 'Up Above'. But actually, everyone are clones, and the lottery winners are the replacement parts for rich folk in the real world. Lincoln Six Echo realizes this, and tries not to die.

Review:

Well, what would I expect from Michael Bay? Very little. I've hated pretty much everything he's done. The only movie I actually enjoyed by him was his first one, Bad Boys, and that was just watchable fluff. I would have enjoyed The Rock if I didn't get a damned headache from the endless quickcuts. It's like the guy doesn't know how to get out of the editing room long enough to keep the audience from feeling like they're on the edge of suffering epileptic seizures. He's like a 6 year old boy with a bad case of ADD. I saw The Island simply because nothing else great was coming out this week...[more]...

Review:

My dad once drove by a movie theater when I was ten and said, "That theater played the same movie for 10 years." He didn't tell me the title. Five years later, we drove by it again and he said, "That theater played Deep Throat for 10 years straight." I already knew this movie's title, because I had seen Linda Lovelace on Donahue complaining about her being abused during the making of this movie (she got no royalties from the film and was penniless by 1986...[more]...

Incognito

Studio: Warner Bros.
Genre: Thriller

Plot: Harry Donovan is a master art forger who works under the radar and by his own terms, never doing the works of true masters so that attention isn't brought to him. Then one day, he's given an offer he should have refused: recreate a Rembrandt for three big-shot art collectors for $500,000. Things are alright until one of the collectors wants to put it on auction, making Harry nervous with all the attention that would be spent on verifying its' authenticity. Thanks to greed, trouble ensues.

Review:

Incognito was released in 1997, and I had no idea that it came out. I caught it one day by happenstance doing some channel surfing a couple of years ago. I missed the first 20 minutes, but watched it because Jason Patric is a cool dude. I thought it was a great movie...[more]...

House of Wax

House-of-wax-poster

Directed by: Jaume Serra
Written by: Chad Hayes, Carey Hayes
Cast: Elisha Cuthbert, Jared Padalecki, Jon Abrahams, Damon Herriman, Paris Hilton, Emma Lung, Chad Michael Murray, Robert Ri'chard, Brian Van Holt
Studio: Warner Bros
Genre: Horror
Official Site: www.houseofwaxmovie.com
Plot: A group of college friends on their way to a football game take a shortcut, which leads to a detour. Of course, this is a bad thing since they end up stuck in the boonies with strange southern folk around (can it ever be anything else?), and eventually find themselves with broken down vehicles, and enter a small town with a house of wax. The small town is strange, especially when the college visitors start getting killed off.

Review:

This is Jaume Serra's first movie as a movie director, coming (surprise surprise) off of the small screen in music videos to yet another Dark Castle horror movie remake of the week. Nothing new here. But that's expected. All that I expect to get out of this flick is some cool murder scenes, cheap thrills and Paris Hilton getting killed. The thrills were nearly non-existent. In fact, I could time exactly when every single 'boo scare' came up. It goes like this: have the camera close in on a character looking a certain direction, make the music a little scary. Have the character realize there is nothing there upon investigation, silence the music and two seconds later, have them turn around and... BOO! Didn't see the person coming up from behind, did you? Well, I did...[more]...

Hooligans

2005-hooligans-1

Directed by: Lexi Alexander
Written by: Dougie Brimson, Josh Shelov, Lexi Alexander
Cast: Elijah Wood, Charlie Hunnam, David Alexander, Oliver Allison
Studio: Freestyle Releasing
Genre: Crime
Official Site:
Plot: A falsely accused Harvard journalism student is expelled, and goes to London to see his sister, but ends up in the streets as a member of a "firm," which is an overly dedicated group of soccer (sorry, football) fans that get in street brawls with other fans from opposing teams.

Review:

The first thing that I'll mention is how amusing it is to see Claire Forlani - an English actress - in a movie based in London as an American wife, complete with an American accent. There's just something strange about the dichotomy of it all to me...[more]...

Honey

Honey-poster

Directed by: Bille Woodruff
Written by: Kim Watson, Alonzo Brown, Kate Lanier, Susannah Grant
Cast: Jessica Alba, Lil' Romeo, Mekhi Phifer, David Moscow, Zachary Williams, Joy Bryant, Lonette McKee
Studio: Universal Pictures
Genre: Drama
Official Site:
Plot: A young girl who has All the Right Moves works nights in a dance club and spends her days teaching young kids how to dance in a broken-down back alley gym that has heart. Meanwhile, Michael Ellis is the hot-shot producer who sees a hand-held camcorder video of Honey struttin' her stuff at the club she works at. Of course Michael Ellis is impressed with what she (or her dance-double) has to offer, so he hires her for his latest music video. This, of course, makes the current hot-shot high-level dancer (who - you won't believe it - is a bitch and can't dance as well as Honey) under Ellis' direction to get fired and pissed off. Can Honey handle the pressure of The Big Time? Cliches and Alba's beautiful midriff ensue.

Review:

Somehow the lack of a real soundtrack that is instead sporadically adorned with the latest hip-hop highlights makes the dialogue and drama fall flat on its face harder than if it was spoken on its' own...[more]...

A History of Violence

2005-history_of_violence-1

Directed by: David Cronenberg
Written by: Josh Olson
Cast: Viggo Mortensen, Ed Harris, Maria Bello, William Hurt
Studio: New Line Cinema
Genre: Thriller
Official Site: www.historyofviolence.com
Plot: Tom Stall is an honest, quiet family man working in a small town coffee shop. A couple evil murderous thieves come in causing trouble. Tom kills them both, becomes a local celebrity, and is then haunted by some big-shot mafia mobsters, claiming he's someone else.

Review:

If you don't know David Cronenberg's style, then be prepared for some gore, sex, and a deliberate pace. That's usually the way his movies turn out. There's also a good imagination, usually on a subject with disturbing undertones to go with it. He's a wacky and far out kinda guy...[more]...

High Tension

2005-high_tension-1

Directed by: Alexandre Aja
Written by: Alexandre Aja, Gregory Levasseur
Cast: Cécile De France, Maïwenn Le Besco, Philippe Nahon, Franck Khalfoun
Studio: Lions Gate Films
Genre: Horror
Official Site: www.hightensionmovie.com
Plot: Mary and Alex are good college (lovers?) friends and head out to visit Alex's family in a deserted cornfield (of course), out in the heavily wooded boonies. During the night a psycho with a rusty truck and coveralls breaks in and kills the father, mother and young boy, leaving Alex chained up and frightened. Mary manages to elude discovery from the killer, and goes on a desperate mission to save her friend's life.

Review:

Horror fans have embraced this movie from all around the globe. It's soon to get an edited release here in America, and this is kind of a big deal. The gore is extreme, but there's very little screentime used showing it. There are only about 2 and a half minutes of onscreen gruesomeness, and the rest is the tension building suspense of being pursued by a sociopathic killer. Sadly, an R rating will most likely remove a memorable head crushing explosion, as well as a few other 'goodies' that I won't mention, because I don't want to give it away. Most definetely there will be an unrated American DVD release once it's out on video. So until then, if you see it in theater, keep in mind that one whole minute will probably change the face of this movie's brutality forever...[more]...
