Walk the Line

2005-walk_the_line-1

Directed by: James Mangold
Written by: James Mangold, Gill Dennis
Cast: Joaquin Phoenix, Reese Witherspoon, Ginnifer Goodwin, Robert Patrick
Studio: Fox
Genre: Biography, Drama
Official Site: www.walkthelinethemovie.com
Plot: Johnny Cash was a legendary rock and country singer. This is the story of the biggest years of his career, spanning through his rise to fame, drug addiciton, and ultimately how he got clean and became the legend that he was when he passed in this world.

Review:

There are obvious similarities to endless other biographical movies, especially for musicians. Take for example setting up his childhood with a depressing death, his addiction to drugs, infidelity, but by the end coming to terms with these demons and going clean. Then, the movie ends nearly disregarding the next three decades of musical influence. Doesn't it sound like last year's Oscar bait Ray? I think it sure does! Jamie Foxx was the only reason to see that movie, but this time around Walk the Line is a better movie, and Phoenix is not too shabby as the man himself, Mr. Johnny Cash...[more]...

War of the Worlds

2005-war_of_the_worlds-1

Directed by: Steven Spielberg
Written by: David Koepp
Cast: Tom Cruise, Dakota Fanning, Miranda Otto, Tim Robbins, David Alan Basche
Studio: Dreamworks
Genre: Science-Fiction
Official Site: www.waroftheworlds.com
Plot: Steven Spielberg jumps on the Remake Bandwagon and makes an evil alien invasion movie. Ray Ferrier is a father who has a tough time being a good father to Robbie and Rachel, and during their visit at his place, aliens decide to come down from the sky and exterminate all humans within sight. This is the best medicine for helping a failing father get closer to his two kids. They go on a journey from New York to Boston to reunite with the kids' mother. This also poses the question: Is Spielberg making a remake during this remake craze really worth it?

Review:

I respect Steven Spielberg for a few things. He's made some of the best movies in history, and although I feel he's been lackluster these last 15 years or so (I hated Saving Private Ryan - GASP!), I respect that he's managed to make a movie or more a year, and he doesn't seem to stray from his typical formula, so most filmgoers will enjoy what he does, and get what's expected from it. It's probably the same thing with War of the Worlds...[more]...

Wayne's World 2

1993-waynes-world-2-poster1

Directed by: Stephen Surjik
Written by: Mike Myers, Bonnie Turner, Terry Turner
Cast: Mike Myers, Dana Carvey, Christopher Walken, Tia Carrere, Kim Basinger, Chris Farley
Studio: Paramount
Genre: Comedy
Official Site:
Plot: Wayne and Garth return, and this time Wayne has a dream with a Wierd Naked Indian Guy that leads him to Jim Morrison in the desert, who tells Wayne that he needs to make a rock concert. Garth finds a hottie girlfriend, and this time around Wayne is jealous of Cassandra's new record producer.

Review:

It would be very hard to make a sequel that was as good as the first Wayne's World, but it's even more unlikely that a sequel could even be watchable. Wayne's World 2 is not that bad of a movie, but it isn't as good as the first. There are still a lot of funny moments... and it's got The Walken! That's always cool! This is even before people loved him after that Fatboy Slim video, and all of a sudden everyone that is college age started loving him! They were way ahead of the curve on this one, and that's just plain wonderful...[more]...

Wayne's World

1992-waynes-world-poster1

Directed by: Penelope Spheeris
Written by: Mike Myers, Bonnie Turner, Terry Turner
Cast: Mike Myers, Dana Carvey, Rob Lowe, Tia Carrere
Studio: Paramount
Genre: Comedy, Music
Official Site:
Plot: Wayne has a popular public access show that he airs with his best friend Garth in his parents' basement. Suddenly, a big name exec approaches Wayne and Garth with a chance at a late night slot for a big time TV station. However, Wayne's new girlfriend seems to be Benjamin Kane's main attraction, making Wayne nervous, and several misadventures to ensue.

Review:

Finally, a movie based off of a popular SNL skit that WORKS! This is not a very common scenario, so one should accept this movie with open arms and a big sigh of relief. There are endless quips and quotes from this movie that everyone knows about, and it has rightly become a classic in its' own right. I would say that after more than ten years, the comedy still holds well thanks to the great performance by Meyers and the numerous moments of clever antics, but the pacing leaves something to be desired. Not much really happens during this movie, but that's not what's truly important. It's more about just being funny, that's what the focus is on. Looking at it now, it seems to amble in several parts, but I never get bored. Many people may find it kind of slow these days...[more]...

Where the Truth Lies

2005-where_the_truth_lies-1

Directed by: Atom Egoyan
Written by: Atom Egoyan
Cast: Kevin Bacon, Colin Firth, Alison Lohman, Rachel Blanchard
Studio: ThinkFilm
Genre: Drama
Official Site:
Plot: It's 1972, and an ambitious reporter interviews a once-famous Daily Show host, trying to discover what really happened between him, his fellow show host friend, and a young lady found dead in a bathtub in 1957.

Review:

Egoyan tries to bring us a noir-ish tale of sex, mystery and intrigue. He's got the sex part, but those last two are debatable. Yes, there are naked women, but the frank use of sex doesn't help propel the movie into a direction that would have worked any differently WITHOUT the nudity. I'm not one to complain about naked ladies, but I do have to complain this time around, simply because it wasn't all that necessary. I could say that this is one of those movies that seems to objectify women, but that can be arged because most of the nudity takes place from the perspective of the story as told by the two show hosts Lanny and Vince, and they aren't the nicest guys in the world...[more]...

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

2005-charlie_and_the_chocolate_factory-1

Directed by: Tim Burton
Written by: John August
Cast: Johnny Depp, Freddie Highmore, AnnaSophia Robb, Christopher Lee, Missi Pyle
Studio: Warner Bros
Genre: Fantasy
Official Site: www.chocolatefactorymovie.com
Plot: Willy Wonka is the mysterious, world-famous candy maker. For several years his factory has been closed off, with no one coming in, or going out. One day, it's announced that Mr. Wonka has started a contest, in which five Golden Tickets are wrapped in random chocolate bars. The winners will get a tour of the factory. Pandemonium ensues, and the winners are chosen. Get ready for a wacky ride into the world of Willy Wonka!

Review:

One must NOT compare this to the 1971 version of Roald Dahl's book. Oh, no! Violent reactions from the fans will ensue. This movie is to be a much more 'loyal adaptation' to the original novel. It's darker, and more disturbing than the cheery, cheeky 1971 film that strayed from the meaner tone of the book. Do NOT mistaken this as Gene Wilder's version of Willy Wonka, and this is NOTHING LIKE the original version. Believe me, if you try to compare them, fans will pummel you to a pulp and shit on your corpse. I've been there. It's not a pretty sight...[more]...

Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory

Review:

This is one of my all-time favorite movies when I was a kid, and even now it holds a kind of magic that few movies can match. Gene Wilder is a perfect choice to play the eccentric and closed-off Mr. Wonka, while all the children perform wonderfully for their given roles. Many complain (including Mr. Dahl himself) that this movie isn't like the book enough, but having never read the book, I can appreciate this in its' own special way. Granted, the Oompa-Loompas are annoying as fuck, but that's what the fastforward button is for on my remote. Outside of these little nuisances, there's little else that I would change in this movie...[more]...

Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow

2004-sky_captain_and_the_world_of_tomorrow-1

Directed by: Kerry Conran
Written by: Kerry Conran
Cast: Jude Law, Gwyneth Paltrow, Giovanni Ribisi, Bai Ling, Omid Djalili, Angelina Jolie
Studio: Paramount
Genre: Action, Animation
Official Site: www.skycaptain.com
Plot: It's 1939 (I assume so, with a scene in a theater playing The Wizard of Oz), in an alternate version of our world in which technology is eerily exactly the same as a serial comic from... the '30s. Huge iron giants invade New York city, and Polly (Gwyneth Paltrow) the reporter is at the scene to investigate. Just as it seems like Polly is gonna bite the dust underfoot of these invading Iron Giants, Jon 'Sky Captain' Sullivan (Jude Law) comes to the rescue. Soon, Polly recieves news that the man responsible for the worldwide robot invasion is the mysterious 'Doctor Totenkopf'. Meanwhile, the rest of the world is also being invaded by these robots, and then flying off for no discernable reason. Polly and Jon's paths have crossed romantically in the past with a not-so-romantic conclusion, but they strike a deal to investigate the reason behind the strange robot invasions together, and seek out the mastermind who is responsible. She gets her story, and he gets the information she's attained.

The Amityville Horror

2005-amityville_horror-1

Directed by: Andrew Douglas
Written by: Scott Kosar
Cast: Ryan Reynolds, Melissa George, Philip Baker Hall, Jimmy Bennett
Studio: MGM
Genre: Horror
Official Site: www.amityvillehorrormovie.com
Plot: The famous house in Amityville, at 112 Ocean Avenue was the scene of a gruesome family murder. Soon after the horrifying events, the Lutz family of five takes the place of the DeFeo's, unaware of the house's history. Once again, an evil series of events transpires, and over 28 days George Lutz slowly starts to go crazy in the haunted house.

Review:

This is 'based on a true story'. OK, fine, go ahead and say that, but the truth of the matter is that yes, the DeFeo family was brutally murdered, and yes, the Lutz family lived there for 28 days before leaving for good. The rest of this movie is almost completely a horror movie concoction, and that's completely alright with me. Did it entertain? That's what's important...[more]...

The 40 Year-Old Virgin

2005-forty_year_old_virgin-1

Directed by: Judd Apatow
Written by: Judd Apatow, Steve Carell
Cast: Steve Carrell, Catherine Keener
Studio: Universal
Genre: Comedy
Official Site: www.the40yearoldvirgin.com
Plot: Andy Stitzer is a quiet, boring, 40 year old virgin. His co-workers find out that he's a virgin, and vow to find a woman to deflower him.

Review:

Steve Carell is a really funny guy, and I was hoping that he'd get to star in his own movie some day. Having said that, I'll seemingly negate this statement by saying that no, I don't think the fumbling vocal anchorman scene in Bruce Almighty was funny for one second, and his random quips and beyond retarded stupidity in Anchorman was not my bag of beans. But he still came across as a guy with heavy potential, topped with... The Daily Show baby, yeah...[more]...

16 Blocks

2006-sixteen_blocks-1

Directed by: Richard Donner
Written by: Richard Wenk
Cast: Bruce Willis, Mos Def, David Morse
Studio: Warner Bros
Genre: Action
Official Site: www.16blocks.com
Plot: After a long shift, an unhappy alcoholic detective (Bruce Willis? Doing this kinda role?) is asked to make a quick trip sending a witness to a high profile case a mere 16 blocks to the courthouse. Everyone wants Eddie Bunker dead, though, so Jack is stuck trying to protect his ass even though he doesn't like the guy.

Review:

My hopes going into this one was "Please, God, have this movie be better than TIMELINE!!" Richard Donner is an awesome director, making some of my all time favorite movies. Timeline, on the other hand, makes me think that he must've been seriously fucked up while making it...[more]...

Saw

2004-saw-1

Directed by: James Wan
Written by: Leigh Whannell
Cast: Tobin Bell, Cary Elwes, Danny Glover, Dina Meyer, Monica Potter
Studio: Lions Gate Films
Genre: Horror
Official Site: www.sawmovie.com
Plot: Two strangers (Leigh Whannell and Cary Elwes) find each other chained at opposite ends of a bathroom, with a dead body stuck in the middle. One is a doctor who is familiar with the Jigsaw murders, and realizes that they are the next two victims of a mysterious, twisted game in which their lives are the prize. Oh yeah, and Danny Glover is the cop hot on the killer’s trail.

Review:

I was expecting a much more frightening and gory film. That’s not to say it wasn’t an awesome time! I avoided reviews, and tried not to know much about this movie until I saw it, because I didn’t want to be spoiled. I was a little disappointed, but mostly because it wasn't quite what I expected. But it's better than being told too much about it beforehand...[more]...

Cast: (voices) Ewan McGregor, Halle Berry, Greg Kinnear, Mel Brooks, Drew Carey, Jim Broadbent, Amanda Bynes, Jennifer Coolidg, Robin Williams

However, there's new management in town, and this new guy's not a fan of used, unpolished robots. This marks the beginning of an adventure for our little robot.

Review:

I decided to see Robots today because I felt like seeing a movie. I wasn't really interested in seeing it based on the trailers. I was thoroughly unimpressed. But since there wasn't anything else of interest to see at the moment, I figured what the hell? I thought Ice Age was 'ok...[more]...

Riding the Bullet

Directed by: Mick Garris
Written by: Mick Garris
Cast: Jonathan Jackson, David Arquette, Erika Christensen, Matt Frewer, Barbara Hershey, Nicky Katt
Studio: Freestyle Releasing
Genre: Horror
Official Site: www.ridingthebulletmovie.com
Plot: Alan Parker goes hitchhiking to visit his mother in the hospital on Halloween night after she suffers a stroke. Everyone that he meets that night - whether real or imagined - haunts him, and forces him to face up to events of his past and the present, and decide a fate that could change his life forever.

Review:

Hey, it's not often that you get a quiet little ghost story for a change. It's not really that gory, nor is it very scary. Hell, it's not even that great of a movie. What it's got going for itself is a moderately paced, quaint little tale that would be a great thing to watch with your significant other - on Halloween night! It's one of those movies that can be added to a pile of 5 other movies for a movie watching night, and make this one number two on the list to watch. That way, your memory of the more uneventful parts of the movie can be forgotten after the four other movies right after it, and you will probably dwell on the better elements of Riding the Bullet...[more]...
