District 9

2009-district9-1

Directed by: Neill Blomkamp
Written by: Neill Blomkamp
Cast: Sharlto Copley, Jason Cope, David James, Mandla Gaduka, William Allen Young, Vanessa Haywood, Kenneth Nkosi, Devlin Brown
Studio: Sony Pictures
Genre: Science Fiction
Official Site: www.d-9.com
Plot: 20 years earlier, an alien ship parks over Johannesburg. Instead of coming to really understand or integrate the creatures and their technology with ours, they are segregated into a slum - just like what really happens in Africa with different races of Africans. Get it? Blatant disregard for the lack of humanity of the creatures is reinforced throughout the movie, only to show us - the audience - that they, too, have feelings! And heart! We should learn to not be racially discriminant! Oh yeah, and a dude sprays his face with a black smudge that turns his DNA into a melded version of human and alien, making weapons formerly unusable by humans a possibility for the guy. Here's the irony; he becomes the lab rat! Get it?

Review:

Oh boy... ANOTHER one of those damned movies that everyone loves but me. I'm going to get sideblinded by naysayers all over the movie forums now. I'm going to keep this brief, and loose.

District 9 is a very stupid movie. I couldn't see most of what the hell was going on, and when it finally tried to go "balls to the wall" action packed, only so many exploded CGI bodies can make me grin. It's just more depressing when I can't see what's going on thanks to the smeary, 2-dimensional CGI. And the excessive "visceral" shaky-cam. Shaky cameras only work about 2 percent of the time that it's used, and this is part of that other ninety eight percent.

Story-wise, I hated the main character. From beginning to end. He was a conceited, selfish and arrogant prick that deserved to be destroyed. His character arc is barely even a fraction of a parabola. It would take amazing math skills to really figure out where he started, and where he finished with lessons learned during the movie's run time. I also didn't give a damn about these aliens.

The social commentary is so silly that I can't believe it's regarded as "smart". Bookending the movie with horrible documentary-style interviews and an even more melodramatic and laughably contrived finish, really gave me an emotional headache.

Moreover, what the CRAP was up with that over-the-top evil soldier? He even laughs like a villain as he heartlessly exterminates a prawn. He says "I love this job!" He should have died 20 times over, yet he somehow still ends up untouched. It makes no sense.

When the soundtrack kicks in with the moaning woman's voice, my eyes started rolling back into their head. Then, the extra slow motion scenes during the action parts didn't add any drama to the stupidity.

Sorry, I pretty much hated this.
