Land of the Dead

2005-land_of_the_dead-1

Directed by: George A. Romero
Written by: George A. Romero
Cast: Simon Baker, John Leguizamo, Dennis Hopper, Asia Argento, Robert Joy
Studio: Universal
Genre: Horror
Official Site: www.landofthedeadmovie.net
Plot: The remaining survivors of the zombie invasion have taken themselves into hiding into a small section of the big city, heading out at night in militaristic fashion to gather supplies, using fireworks as a deterrent. All goes to hell when the zombies start to use tools and learn how to be more human. Thanks to one gas station worker, who likes to imitate the Frankenstein Vader yell.

Review:

Finally, Mr. Romero has been able to bring the next installment of his zombie series to the big screen. Just as the zombies themselves have reached new heights of intelligence, so has this film series made large advancements in special effects, and been an influence for the horror genre in general. Night of the Living Dead is a classic in its' own right due to the fact that it is a gritty, gruesome low budget horror movie with an unlikely hero (a black man) during the time of release, with a kickass ending. Dawn of the Dead was a masterful display of gore effects thanks to Tom Savini, who has since then become a legendary makeup effects artist in his own right. Day of the Dead is cheesy and pretty retarded for the most part, but that's some of the movie's charm... and the gore level - WHEW! Great stuff...[more]...

Studio: Warner Bros
Genre: Romantic Drama

One thing leads to another, and eventually both Alex and Kate realize that they exist two years apart from each other. Alex is in 2004, and Kate is in 2006. Eventually, they fall in love, but of course the distance by time makes their love for one another difficult.

Review:

Well, before I say anything, I have to admit that this was like 1000 times better than Reeve's tour-de-force flick with Charlize Theron. No, not Devil's Advocate. I'm talking about Sweet November. Holy SHIT that movie fucking BLEW ASS DONKEY GOAT BALLS!! I'm very happy that I didn't have another Miss Congeniality 2 on my hands with this Bullock drama...[more]...

Studio: Fox Searchlight Pictures
Genre: Horror

Plot: A family decides to take a long route to California, and while in the desert in New Mexico, they end up being terrorized by a buncha nuclear tested rejects intent on killing them.

Review:

Obviously my first reaction to this movie is "oh, great. Another unneccessary remake." Wes Craven's original was good for what it was. It was low budget, gritty and effective for the time of its' release (although I didn't really like it all that much). I see no reason to redo it, since every year there are a handful of horror movies with just the same premise (family/friends stuck in the middle of nowhere being chased by mutated/mean rednecks). I'm tired of this formula. VERY tired. They should wait a few years before doing any more of them...[more]...

The Thing (1982)

1982-the-thing-poster1

Directed by: John Carpenter
Written by: Bill Lancaster
Cast: Kurt Russell, Wilford Brimley, T.K. Carter, David Clennon
Studio: Universal
Genre: Horror, Science-Fiction
Official Site:
Plot: An American science team in Antarctica is visited by a couple Norwegians in a helicopter, seemingly hellbent on the destruction of a dog that runs into the encampment. They soon realize that the dog is an alien lifeform that takes the identities of its’ victims. Fear settles in as no one can be sure anyone is who they claim to be…

Review:

It’s 1982. John Carpenter has already made a name for himself with Halloween (1978) and Escape From New York (1981). Carpenter is at the top of his game with The Thing. The desolate surroundings of a closed-off outpost in Antarctica is the perfect setting for some freaky-scary shit to go down. Not being able to trust anyone is a tough situation. Being stuck in Antarctica, things have to be just a tad bit worse; there’s nowhere to run to...[more]...

Sideways

2004-sideways-1

Directed by: Alexander Payne
Written by: Alexander Payne, Jim Taylor
Cast: Paul Giamatti, Sandra Oh, Virginia Madsen, Thomas Haden Church
Studio: Fox Searchlight Pictures
Genre: Comedy
Official Site: www.foxsearchlight.com/sideways/
Plot: Jack is one week from getting married, and he decides to spend the week wine testing and soul-searching with his pessimistic wine loving buddy Miles. Miles is still getting over his old divorce, and Jack works his charm in hopes of bringing more happiness to Miles' vacation. Wine lovers rejoice, it's a movie about people who love wine!

Review:

Well, this was my final Best Picture nomination of 2005 for me to see. Was it worth it? I'd say so! This is a great drama that brings a good many laughs, very few flat scenes and a lot of talk about wine. It's not like wine is the main attraction here, but it's a great backdrop to help bring a fresh perspective on a typical story. It's another one of those 'two middle aged guys going on a small adventure to enrich their humdrum lives' kinda flick. One of them needs to be the extrovert, and the other is the suffering introvert; is there any other kind? Some have mentioned this as a Swingers for the 40's age bracket. In some ways this makes sense, but then again it's not really the same thing. We've got Vince Vaughn and Jon Favreau going to Vegas in this movie, but it's Jack and Miles heading into California's wine country. That - along with the previously mentioned introvert/extrovert personality dichotomies - is about where the simliarities end...[more]...

This is of course the next comedy installment of the South Park duo Matt Stone and Trey Parker. If you like the TV show or movies, then there’s no need to recommend this to you; no doubt you’ve already seen it...[more]...

The Village

2004-village-1

Directed by: M. Night Shyamalan
Written by: M. Night Shyamalan
Cast: Joaquin Phoenix, Bryce Howard, William Hurt, Sigourney Weaver, Adrien Brody, Judy Greer, Brendan Gleeson, Michael Pitt
Studio: Touchstone Pictures
Genre: Thriller
Official Site: thevillage.movies.com
Plot: A bunch of religious hoo-has that we shouldn't really care about are holed up in a remote village during the 1890's. No one leaves this village because of "Those That Shall Not Be Named" lurking in the woods just outside the village. These creatures hate the color red, and will kill or eat anyone who decides to leave the village. The townsfolk and the creatures have a pact to not interfere with each others' business. Kind of a 'stay off my turf, I stay off yours' treaty, if you will. The kids start dying of a curable disease that the town does not have the medicine to fix. In comes Lucius Hunt (Joaquin Pheonix), a quiet and brave young soul who asks the Village Elders for permission to pass through the forest to get medicine for the children. A lot of quiet dialogue, worthless melodrama and unsuspenseful moments follow up the next one hour and 25 minutes of The Village.

Review:

There's been controversy about The Village for quite some time. The script was leaked onto the internet back in May, and a rather sizeable group of people were pissed about the ending. I thought, "Hm. Maybe there isn't a twist ending this time. That could be why people are pissed...[more]...

The Transporter 2

2005-transporter_two-1

Directed by: Louis Leterrier
Written by: Luc Besson, Robert Mark Kamene
Cast: Jason Statham, Amber Valletta, Keith David, Matthew Modine, Hunter Clary, Jeff Chase
Studio: Fox
Genre: Action
Official Site: www.transporter2movie.com
Plot: Frank is a Transporter. He will deliver a package with no questions asked. This time around, he transports a rich family's kid to and from school as a favor for an acquaintance. It's the last day on the job when a team of baddies try to kidnap the boy, and of course, Frank then proceeds to kick a lot of ass.

Review:

I have to say that I thought the first Transporter delivered the goods in the entertainment department. Statham was rad, the fight choreography was outstanding, it had a great soundtrack and the supporting characters were charming in their own right. Yes, I love Qi Shu. So anyways, I was looking forward to just as much fun with Transporter 2. Unfortunately, this fell into not only the bad elements to a lot of sequels, but also managed to do WRONG what the first one did so right...[more]...

The Transporter

2002-transporter-1

Directed by: Cory Yuen
Written by: Luc Besson, Robert Mark Kamen
Cast: Jaston Statham, Shu Qi, Francois Berleand, Matt Schulze, Doug Rand, Jedd Tan, Rick Young
Studio: 20th Century Fox
Genre: Action, Crime
Official Site: www.transportermovie.com/
Plot: Frank is a Transporter. He will deliver a package with no questions asked. He has his own rules, and once he starts to break those rules, bad things happen. And he has to kick a lot of ass. One of his rules is "Do not open the package." But his latest package is a beautiful Chinese hottie, and he opens it. This causes trouble, and he has to kick a lot of ass.

Review:

There are some action movies that are completely ridiculous. There is no way in HELL that shit goes down in real life like as done with Hollywood. However, a handful of these movies can be a shitload of fun in the process. Transporter is one of those movies. The so-called plot is all about getting Frank into trouble, so that we can enjoy him fighting his way out...[more]...

Unleashed

2005-unleashed-1

Directed by: Louis Leterrier
Written by: Luc Besson, Robert Mark Kamene
Cast: Jet Li, Morgan Freeman, Bob Hoskins, Kerry Condon
Studio: Rogue Pictures
Genre: Thriller
Official Site: www.unleashedmovie.com
Plot: Danny is raised like a dog by a not-so-friendly debt collector. Once the collar comes off, he turns into an unstoppable man-beating machine. Pavlov, eat your heart out! After an accident, a blind piano tuner befriends Danny and takes him into his home, exposing Danny to a whole new way of living, and starts to question his existence as a beast, while starting to become a man.

Review:

Jet Li is one mean kung fu asskicker. Fans of Hong Kong action cinema probably already know this. When it comes to hands down relentless fighting scenes, he's done better in his home country, but that's not to say that his aggressive techniques aren't a blast in this one. As an action movie, it pretty much delivers the fun times in the first and third acts...[more]...

Walk the Line

2005-walk_the_line-1

Directed by: James Mangold
Written by: James Mangold, Gill Dennis
Cast: Joaquin Phoenix, Reese Witherspoon, Ginnifer Goodwin, Robert Patrick
Studio: Fox
Genre: Biography, Drama
Official Site: www.walkthelinethemovie.com
Plot: Johnny Cash was a legendary rock and country singer. This is the story of the biggest years of his career, spanning through his rise to fame, drug addiciton, and ultimately how he got clean and became the legend that he was when he passed in this world.

Review:

There are obvious similarities to endless other biographical movies, especially for musicians. Take for example setting up his childhood with a depressing death, his addiction to drugs, infidelity, but by the end coming to terms with these demons and going clean. Then, the movie ends nearly disregarding the next three decades of musical influence. Doesn't it sound like last year's Oscar bait Ray? I think it sure does! Jamie Foxx was the only reason to see that movie, but this time around Walk the Line is a better movie, and Phoenix is not too shabby as the man himself, Mr. Johnny Cash...[more]...

War of the Worlds

2005-war_of_the_worlds-1

Directed by: Steven Spielberg
Written by: David Koepp
Cast: Tom Cruise, Dakota Fanning, Miranda Otto, Tim Robbins, David Alan Basche
Studio: Dreamworks
Genre: Science-Fiction
Official Site: www.waroftheworlds.com
Plot: Steven Spielberg jumps on the Remake Bandwagon and makes an evil alien invasion movie. Ray Ferrier is a father who has a tough time being a good father to Robbie and Rachel, and during their visit at his place, aliens decide to come down from the sky and exterminate all humans within sight. This is the best medicine for helping a failing father get closer to his two kids. They go on a journey from New York to Boston to reunite with the kids' mother. This also poses the question: Is Spielberg making a remake during this remake craze really worth it?

Review:

I respect Steven Spielberg for a few things. He's made some of the best movies in history, and although I feel he's been lackluster these last 15 years or so (I hated Saving Private Ryan - GASP!), I respect that he's managed to make a movie or more a year, and he doesn't seem to stray from his typical formula, so most filmgoers will enjoy what he does, and get what's expected from it. It's probably the same thing with War of the Worlds...[more]...

Wayne's World 2

1993-waynes-world-2-poster1

Directed by: Stephen Surjik
Written by: Mike Myers, Bonnie Turner, Terry Turner
Cast: Mike Myers, Dana Carvey, Christopher Walken, Tia Carrere, Kim Basinger, Chris Farley
Studio: Paramount
Genre: Comedy
Official Site:
Plot: Wayne and Garth return, and this time Wayne has a dream with a Wierd Naked Indian Guy that leads him to Jim Morrison in the desert, who tells Wayne that he needs to make a rock concert. Garth finds a hottie girlfriend, and this time around Wayne is jealous of Cassandra's new record producer.

Review:

It would be very hard to make a sequel that was as good as the first Wayne's World, but it's even more unlikely that a sequel could even be watchable. Wayne's World 2 is not that bad of a movie, but it isn't as good as the first. There are still a lot of funny moments... and it's got The Walken! That's always cool! This is even before people loved him after that Fatboy Slim video, and all of a sudden everyone that is college age started loving him! They were way ahead of the curve on this one, and that's just plain wonderful...[more]...

Wayne's World

1992-waynes-world-poster1

Directed by: Penelope Spheeris
Written by: Mike Myers, Bonnie Turner, Terry Turner
Cast: Mike Myers, Dana Carvey, Rob Lowe, Tia Carrere
Studio: Paramount
Genre: Comedy, Music
Official Site:
Plot: Wayne has a popular public access show that he airs with his best friend Garth in his parents' basement. Suddenly, a big name exec approaches Wayne and Garth with a chance at a late night slot for a big time TV station. However, Wayne's new girlfriend seems to be Benjamin Kane's main attraction, making Wayne nervous, and several misadventures to ensue.

Review:

Finally, a movie based off of a popular SNL skit that WORKS! This is not a very common scenario, so one should accept this movie with open arms and a big sigh of relief. There are endless quips and quotes from this movie that everyone knows about, and it has rightly become a classic in its' own right. I would say that after more than ten years, the comedy still holds well thanks to the great performance by Meyers and the numerous moments of clever antics, but the pacing leaves something to be desired. Not much really happens during this movie, but that's not what's truly important. It's more about just being funny, that's what the focus is on. Looking at it now, it seems to amble in several parts, but I never get bored. Many people may find it kind of slow these days...[more]...
