ranting? ranting
Ok, I'm gonna try to rant about this without coming off as anal and a bit of an obsessive headcase, but that seems unlikely.
A nitpick that I always seemed to have was when people call "Raiders of the Lost Ark" - Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark... just.. no.. that's not the title of the movie. It seems to me that Lucas might be trying to alter the original title to fit in with the Indiana Jones brand- like he did with the DVD releases (even the standalone copies now say "Indy and the Raiders of the Lost Ark")... and you can bet that the blu-rays will most likely say that as well.
Does he really think that fans who don't see "Indiana Jones and the.." in the title would have no idea what it was? What is the reasoning behind this? Does it bother me? Yeah it does.. why does it bother me? I'm not really sure, it just bugs me. Now I can see that from a packaging standpoint in makes sense because they look nice together.. and I can honestly let that slide (though I prefer the original). It's the possibility of a real title change that would bother me. People could also draw comparisons to Star Wars: A New Hope and ask why that doesn't bother me as much, when that title was officially changed. Well, that was the original title that Lucas wanted in the crawl but the studios felt that it would "confuse audiences", so they scrapped it... Not to mention that the subtitle was put in when the sequels were announced, not decades later to tie it in with the franchise. Now, does that really justify anything about the change? I guess it depends on when you saw it and how you feel about that trilogy/saga as a whole... the timing and creative decisions are what validate that change in my eyes.
I don't want this to come off as a rant against Lucas because God knows there's been enough of those and I don't hate the guy like others do. I know that a lot of people will say "why care about this?" and "it's not a big deal" but I can't fathom changing the title of an iconic Hollywood film to fit with the rest of your merchandise... At this point it only seems like it's being used for cover art and not as a new title, so I don't want to set the alarms off. It's even listed as "Raiders of the Lost Ark" on the LucasFilm website, so I have no idea if he even wants this change to be official (but you really never know with that man).

Chillin'AMEN TO THAT. That addition always irritated the hell out of me. Really Lucas!? Are people really not going to know what Raiders is without 'Indiana Jones and the' in the title.
Just went to Disney World this past week and noticed the attraction "The Great Movie Ride" still refers to this film as Raiders of the Lost Ark. They even show the original trailer during the ride pre-show. The ride is a little dated but still vintage stuff....
I can live with some altered cover art like that but as long as Lucas doesn't buttfuck everyone completely by changing the title as it actually appears in the movie I'll be cool.
No but really if I find out that's been done for the Blu-rays I will boycott. Serious.
I can definitely understand where you are coming from on this, sadly though I would only anger you because for as long as I can remember I have always called it Indiana Jones And The Raiders Of The Lost Ark.
@Derek, if he read that he would be in the editing room within the hour.
Rant away. I agree completely. I saw the film when it was first released in 1981 and it's always going to be Raiders of the Lost Ark to me and that's fucking that!
Your Star Wars example is perfect. In that case there was creative precedence. This is just asinine fondling of an established property. Totally unnecessary and it's like you said, what's the point other than to put a big fucking arrow on the cover saying "LOOK, THIS GUY IS INDIANA JONES...WANT TO BUY NOW!?"
the poster on my wall says Raiders of the Lost Ark and that'S the way it's going to stay and I will correct people every time. your rant is 100% justified, sir.
I call it Indiana Jones... don't hate me haha. That's what I called it when I was a kid, that's what my family and friends called it.. I think that MAYBE it was what the Mexican theaters called it, so I'm a bit justified there.

I agree 110%
