Cool World

1992-cool-world-poster1

Directed by: Ralph Bakshi
Written by: Michael Grais, Mark Victor
Cast: Kim Basinger, Gabriel Byrne, Brad Pitt, Michele Abrams
Studio: Paramount
Genre: Fantasy, Comedy

Review:

At first glance this just comes across as a more adult version of 'Roger Rabbit' and you'd be right basically. The plot is almost the same kind of thing involving a toon (they are called doodles) trying to get into the real world and then turn it into another toon world, pretty basic idea...[more]...

Die Hard: With a Vengeance

1995-die-hard-with-a-vengeance-poster1

Directed by: John McTiernan
Written by: Roderick Thorp, Jonathan Hensleigh

Studio: 20th Century Fox
Genre: Action, Thriller

Review:

This starts out so good, the bomb threats over NY and willis having to chase all over to get to em, brilliant stuff. Jackson is also great as Willis' partner, very amusing in a loud sarcastic way. I just think it loses its punch midway through and doesn't get it back totally. The ending is alittle flat and to be honest I never thought much to Irons as the baddie, its just trying to ride on the success of Rickman and his character.

Die Hard

Review:

The granddaddy of all gun/action movies, coined the term 'Die Hard on a...'
this rocks so much, the cast is superb, Rickman especially, and the action is truly pumpin, never letting up the tense sweaty tight pressure for one minute. Like some Arnie flicks the dialog has also gone down in history, hell this film is virtually a part of history as much as 'Star Wars', you really cant fault it on any level, Mctiernan also made 'Predator', the man is or was god.

Last Man Standing

1996-last-man-standing-poster2

Studio: New Line Cinema
Genre: Action

Review:

Haven't seen this since 96 on cinematic release but I know it did poorly which is really a bit of a mystery to me as I quite enjoyed this.

Well known of course as a remake of 'Yojimbo' and remake of that 'A Fistful of Dollars' so you know what to expect but admittedly when completely copying certain scenes exactly from the Clint remake you start to wonder why bother. Apart from that it looks great in Prohibition-era Texas with all the natty suits, hats, a dusty ghostly western town and tommy guns blazing.

Action is vicious when it kicks in with some pretty intense over the top gun battles, although the way some bad guys fly back through the air when hit is a tad silly. All the bad guys are well cast and eat up the screen perfectly, Kelly and Walken easily the best, but the casting of Willis was possibly a mistake as he isn't the greatest of actors and doesn't have the presence to pull off a 'Clint' type character.

Love the idea of the era for this remake though, perfect choice, good fun to watch in my opinion if slightly slow inbetween the gun fighting and unfortunately the ending is a bit of an anti climax, could of been more epic than that surely?. Solid stuff.

Transporter 3

2008-transporter3-4

Directed by: Olivier Megaton
Written by: Luc Besson, Robert Mark Kamen
Cast: Jason Statham, Robert Knepper, Justin Rodgers Hall, Katia Tchenko
Studio: Lionsgate
Genre: Action
Official Site: transporter3film.com/
Plot:

Review:

From the start I was completely lost haha total hash of a storyline which only makes sense about half way through the film. The baddies all wear black, the cars are all black, they all use crap cars from Germany, the girl in question is very cute but very cliched like the entire film and the stunts involving the indestructible car are laughable.

Its suppose to be over the top of course but its just so stupid you don't care after a time, we've seen it all before time and time again and seeing as the first was quite a decent flick..this has really let the trilogy down, but the second was pretty bad so..

Crank: High Voltage

2009-crank2-2

Directed by: Mark Neveldine, Brian Taylor
Written by: Mark Neveldine, Brian Taylor
Cast: Jason Statham, Amy Smart, Clifton Collins, Jr., Dwight Yoakam, Geri Halliwell, Corey Haim
Studio: Lionsgate
Genre: Action
Official Site: www.crank2.com
Plot:

Review:

High octane isn't the word with this flick, Grand Theft Auto on speed with a firecracker up its arse more like haha.
This is pure and utter mayhem from start to finish, it IS a computer game, guns, guns, big guns, tits, ass, naked girls, more tits and ass, bullet wounds, graphic sex n violence, swearing to the max, unreal situations, gangs, knives and a whole load of shaky cam work.

But don't be put of as this is a good pile of adrenaline soaked in petrol, its totally crazy and yet extremely fun. The stupid plot is lost as you stare wide eyed at the carnage unfolding before you, the film never lets up for one sec as you move from one nipple slicing sequence to the next (the over the top graphic novel style violence does remind me of 'Robocop'). Statham really excels here too, his rough cockney image blends so well in the melting pot of LA (you wouldn't think) and his grizzled appearance does go down in cinema character history along side other classics's such as 'Snake Plissken'.

Apart from a rather quick and unexpected ending which is a shame this is great fun with plenty for all pervs and gun nuts hahaha much better than the first outing.

Bangkok Dangerous

2008-bangkok_dangerous-2

Directed by: Oxide Pang, Danny Pang
Written by: Jason Richman
Cast: Nicolas Cage, Shahkrit Yamnarm, Nirattisai Kaljaruek, Charlie Young, Panward Hemmanee
Studio: Lionsgate
Genre: Action
Official Site: www.lionsgate.com/bangkokdangerous
Plot:

Review:

Very average film which has had a terrible casting mistake in Cage. He just doesnt fit the part in this story, his hair is getting stranger every film he does and the stunts are obviously not him. The film does look good based in Bangkok with its neon skyline and old city areas, the Thai cast is much better than the US cast, the problem is this kinda feels like a rerun of 'Leon' and nowhere near as good.
Its not Cages best film but its average, very average.....and slightly dull.

The Professional

1994-the-professional-poster3

Directed by: Luc Besson
Written by: Luc Besson
Cast: Jean Reno, Gary Oldman, Natalie Portman, Danny Aiello
Studio: Columbia Pictures
Genre: Action, Thriller
Official Site:
Plot:

Review:

The best hitman movie ever, so ice cool so slick and quite emotional. Jean Reno's best subtle performance and Portman's best role also (as a kid) yet disturbingly hot. The action is first class and pinpoint, Oldman is crazy and his sidekicks are just waiting to be whacked hehe. The start sequence and finale are awesome, Luc Besson's best and the film that put Reno on the map in the west.

A Bronx Tale

1993-a-bronx-tale-poster1

Directed by: Robert De Niro
Written by: Chazz Palminteri
Cast: Robert De Niro, Chazz Palminteri, Lillo Brancato, Francis Capra
Studio: Savoy
Genre: Crime, Drama
Official Site:
Plot:

Review:

This was one of the first gangster films I saw I think, as a kid. Its really good, and rather under rated, the story of growing up in the Bronx with the hoods is a common one but done really well here, Palminteri is cool and quite scary as the calm yet tough hood leader. De Niro for once is not a gangster here but good as a caring father showing the struggle between father and gangster influence, well performed. You do care for the characters here and the outcome is not clear from the start, it all looks good, sounds good, alittle cliched with the characters but thats hard to avoid with this genre. Well performed throughout, the young kids at the start are very impressive too, shame it tends to be forgotten.

Terminal Velocity

1994-terminal-velocity-poster1

Directed by: Deran Sarafian
Written by: David Twohy
Cast: Charlie Sheen, Nastassja Kinski, James Gandolfini, Christopher McDonald
Studio: Buena Vista
Genre: Action
Official Site:
Plot:

Review:

The second skydiving action flick released in 94 and again its not exactly a brilliant film but fairs somewhat better than 'Drop Zone' in my opinion.
Charlie Sheen is cast after the possibility of Cruise was lost so obviously instead of a huge blockbuster this is more of an average run of the mill actioner, its not too bad to be honest as Sheen was always best in silly action fests and doesn't disappoint here with his funny quick quips and slightly classic James Dean Hollywood appearance.

Abit of class is added with Kinski and Gandolfini plus an interesting plot that does keep you guessing for awhile yet not too long but its actually good fun watching Sheen blunder his way through the mystery with some decent stunts and fist fighting. The most impressive stunt being a car dumped out the back of a plane with Sheen in the drivers seat, clearly not the star but its a fun sequence and better than watching skydivers mince around in the air with 'Drop Zone'.
Watch out for the ending in this as its a real duffer with some nasty bluescreen going on, allot of bluescreen used in this film but the ending just looked the worst..for a simple shot.

I had not seen this movie in at least 10 years and then I watched it about a month ago. Not as good as I remember it being but I also thought it had a good story and Sheen is good in the role. But there are a few too many cheesy one liners and some of the villains are too cartoonish. I give it a 6/10

Drop Zone

1994-drop-zone-poster5

Directed by: John Badham
Written by: Peter Barsocchini, John Bishop
Cast: Wesley Snipes, Gary Busey, Yancy Butler, Michael Jeter
Studio: Paramount Pictures
Genre: Thriller, Action
Official Site:
Plot:

Review:

I remember when this came out it was quite a big action flick for Snipes, its funny when you look back on these old films and see how bad they really were hehe. One of two skydiving flicks released in the same year (much like the two Robin Hood flicks) but quite different from each other surprisingly.
This film is a slight rip on the far superior 'Point Break' in my humble opinion, just replace surfing with skydiving and you pretty much know what I'm talking about plot wise and action wise.

Problem is the action is rather dull, repetitive and dated even back then with a boring gang of baddies lead by the too old Gary Busey and a whole host of similar aerial set pieces that are clearly not the stars haha. Very much a by the numbers action flick that isn't as good as other by the numbers action flicks.

The People vs George Lucas

Cast: Neil Gaiman, Ray Harryhausen, Berge Garabedian
Studio: Wrekin Hill, NECA Films
Genre: Comedy, Documentary

Review:

This is THE doc film any Star Wars fan would want to watch IF they have ever pondered whether the big George Lucas has been correct in his tinkering. Not just the constant fiddling is questioned though, the much talked about prequels are also questioned along with the way in which the big GL has changed as his fame and fortune massed from back in 1977...[more]...

Robot Jox

1990-robot-jox-poster1

Directed by: Stuart Gordon
Written by: Joe Haldeman
Cast: Gary Graham, Anne-Marie Johnson, Paul Koslo, Robert Sampson, Danny Kamekona
Studio: Triumph
Genre: Sci-Fi, Action
Official Site:
Plot:

Review:

Some epic robot/mecha fighting going on here with some epic stop motion effects hehe well sort of, its certainly very dated and looks more like an episode of 'Red Dwarf' than a film but its so gloriously tacky and fun.

A Band production (he does churn them out) which does seem to bare a small similarity to the recent 'Reel Steel' but admittedly is more of a mech film. Basically trained fighters combat in massive mechs for control of certain parts of the world which hold value but the fighters are part of a 'Formula 1' type team. Its chock full of silly sci-fi and wonderfully cheesy effects and bluescreen, some of which looks OK some of which looks nasty, but one things for sure the cast do their best to make it seem serious *chuckle*.

Its very easy going stuff and perfect for those sci-fi hounds out there that love a good B-movie and I'm sure we all know of Mr Band's work. Goodies wear white and are team America where as the baddies wear black and are naughty evil team Russia (boo! hiss!) 'crash n burn'.

More of a serious and adult version of 'Outbreak' really, minus all the glossy Hollywood action and over the top acting from a certain Mr Gooding and Hoffman. This is totally straight and a very accurate depiction of what could happen if a lethal virus outbreak occured in the present day...[more]...

Studio: Paramount Pictures
Genre: Crime, Thriller

Review:

First time seeing this well known cult and first impressions were a kind of violent 'West Side Story' without song hehe but I admit I did enjoy this and its now wicked retro styles and imagery. Although the plot is cool and just a nice excuse for some gang fisticuffs, which is fine, the film is now pretty dated (I was only 1yr old when it came out) and the makeup and outfits really are alittle comical at times with some gang members and their 'Kiss' look ;) even though it does look kinda funny I still love how the gangs all have the same colourful outfits, they must have shopped together...[more]...
