Slackers is one of those movies I watched a lot on cable but even back then, I was aware it wasn’t a classic by any means. Dave (Devon Sawa), Sam (Jason Segel), and Jeff (Michael Maronna) are three best friends in college who have scammed their way through life. One day, the boys are trying to find a way to cheat on a test. Dave meets an attractive student named Angela (Jaime King) while cheating on the test and gets caught off guard. This small mistake he makes causes him to get blackmailed by a weird loner named Ethan (Jason Schwartzman). The thing about Ethan is he has a creepy obsession with Angela, who he’s so in love with that he has a shrine dedicated to her and a doll made out of her hair. The boys have to find a way to get Angela to fall in love or else he’ll tell the administration about their cheating scam. I thought this was hilarious when I was a kid, but the laughs are pretty hit and miss. That said, it had some pretty hilarious moments. Jason Schwartzman was really good and creepy. Everyone else is pretty decent. Laura Prepon was pretty hot as Angela’s horny roommate and I’m certain that she was partly responsible for jumpstarting my puberty. The comedy is really dumb and will probably not be for everyone. If you ever wanted to see an old lady getting her breasts soaped up or a guy with a singing penis, then this is the movie for you.
