Jake Hoyt (Ethan Hawke) is an LAPD officer who gets partnered with a detective named Alonzo Harris (Denzel Washington) on his training day. Alonzo tries to show Jake the ropes and little does Jake know what’s going to be in for. Jake is a pretty good guy and doesn’t completely agree with Alonzo‘s methods at first. But since Alonzo is his superior, he just goes along with it. Jake soon realizes how corrupt Alonzo really is and how far this man is willing to go to get what he wants. As the movie progresses, it gets darker and crazier. I think Denzel Washington is a great actor but it’s nice to see him get out of his comfort zone. In fact, this is my favorite role of his. He seems very committed to the role and it really shows. Ethan Hawke was pretty good too. I’ve been watching this since I was about 10 and have always enjoyed it. I like how it starts out pretty calm and as it proceeds, it gets more insane as it goes. I know some people have a problem with the change in tone throughout the movie, but it never bothered me. It’s a great movie and I don’t care who says otherwise.
